The list of non-major characters is getting larger and larger, but halfway through this season, who do you think has played the best role in the story of Lost so far?

Wow, after tonight, Rose is becoming more of a major character. I wonder if she's going to start showing up more often now?

When the pilot aired, I just ASSUMED that Rose was going to be one of the main characters. As the writers have said some of the non-major characters will eventually start to rise up and take on greater roles, I put my $5 on Rose being the first one promoted to backstory-havin' full-on main character status. And then Scott and Steve right behind her.

You think there will ever be a back story on Danielle, or Ethan? Also, why does everyone always talk about Scott and Steve so much? Is it because he's on this website a lot? I don't understand why he gets so much attention when so far the show has only given him 1? line in the series so far. I do agree with you on Rose though. She very well could be added to the main cast lineup at this rate.

Alden, there is a Rose thread that was started a long time ago. It is under "Black lady on the beach." That is where everyone has been talking about Rose since the pilot.

I have to agree with you 150% Christian has been an awesome VIP here.

I figured Nadia and Danielle's votes would increase after this past rerun of Solitary. They both are very important characters in the plot. I wonder when Danielle will be shown again. Thanks also to the person who finally voted for Claire's psychic. I have a feeling he's going to be a lot more involved with the mystery of Lost than we think. How crazy would it be if everyone in the plane wound up seeing that psychic at some time during their stay in Sydney. They've only shown Claire's visit with that psychic, but who is to say that the rest of the plane didn't get THEIR tickets from him as well. Oh well, just a thought.

I put Nadia because I really love the character. She was courageous and strong to what she believes. Also, her love for Sayid was real, it was not phony. Sometimes, it is hard for an actor to convey the fact that you care for the other actor because you might not care about him at all. I hope we will see her soon. I love Nadia! She is my fun Fearless Female ( plus Andrea Gabriel loves Fraggle Rock ...so that's also a reason she had my vote)

I agree with you 100% JY! I'm not sure about Steve especially since his character hasn't even remotely had anything to do with the story so far (no offense Christian if you're reading this). Nadia - at least she has had a significant plot in the story. Danielle and Ethan are by far the most intriguing and meaningful to the story so far.
Claire's psychic still has potential as well... He'll be back before the story unfolds.

Personally, JY, I don't see how you can even put Nadia and Steve in the same category. Nadia's obviously not just another guest star from a flashback (like Liam or Claire's boyfriend)-- we were introduced to her character back when Sayid was looking at her picture in Walkabout, so I have a feeling she'll have much more to do with the storyline as it unfolds. The acting work in Solitary was nothing short of extraordinary... (she acted circles around the series regular women, if you ask me) and the fact that she's kind to her fans and posts here, that shouldn't take away from the fact that she touched many people deeply, myself included. I really don't think June in any way meant to "put down" any one else's choices, she simply had a theory about why the votes had broken out the way they had. On some levels I don't disagree with her. Certainly one of the reasons that "Danielle" is now as high in the poll as she is that Mira has a dedicated and devoted bunch of fans who have been following her work for years, back to when she was on Babylon 5.

I think it's great that both Christian Bowman and Andrea Gabriel hang out here and interact with the fans. And that the fans appreciate it that, even if it's just to vote for them in a poll.

I liked Andrea as "Nadia", but I'm of the opinion that "Sayid" leaving her picture behind at "Danielle's" habitat is a sign that "Nadia" is now part of his past and that he is moving on. For that reason I think it's unlikely that we will see "Nadia" again. I think we've seen the end of "Nadia's story as "Sayid" knows it. "Nadia's" picture is what kept "Sayid" "lost" in the past, like "Sawyer's" letter, "Charlie's drugs, "Kate's" toy airplane, and "Locke's" wheelchair.

Fair enough, but don't forget that everyone's story is still unfolding. We don't know what's behind the story of the plane, and Sawyer's letter (I'm sure) still has a lot to do with his flashbacks in future episodes. So even though the characters have stuff that kept them in the past, several stories still have details yet to be told. Don't forget, we don't know why Sayid was on the plane. We'll probably have to wait until next season for that. I don't think that we've seen the last of Nadia.

I think part of the problem figuring out who should and shouldn't be in the poll is that the producers have said that a minor character could get elevated to a major character down the road. "Scott" and "Steve" are candidates for that, as is I think "Danielle".

May be you should just put a note at the beginning of the thread that if someone feels that someone is missing from the poll they should send you a private message and let you know that there is someone they want to vote for.

I have nothing against people with opinions (I have opinions too). But... if the only expression of a person's opinion is ability to sling negatives (and commence doing it during the first minutes of membership on a message board)... my regard for their opinion is *regretfully* shaken.

For the record: I consider "Solitary" an excellent episode. I was quite enchanted by Danielle, and also notably puzzled about the character of Nadia. I would *definitely* wish to learn more about her story.

However, with your apparent personal dislike for Mira... I couldn't possibly disagree more. I consider most of her performances quite wonderful -- and especially Delenn from "Babylon 5". I can hardly imagine anyone conveying that role better. Delenn could be harmless and cute... but also dangerous and credibly intimidating. That ability to change made her a realistic ambassador / politician.

Why should anyone here not be allowed to express their opinion? You can think what you want but let others have their say...

BTW, my fav character is the dog Vincent!

Yes, I admit that was a large oversight on my part. Possibly because in my head it's just so obvious that she would be the first one elevated.

I like Rose a lot! L. Scott Caldwell is a terrific actress. I'd like to see more of her.

Oh dear. Let's clear some things up. I have nothing against nor have I ever put down Mira Furlan. I think she did a great job in Solitary-- I never watched Babylon 5. I took issue with JY's comment* because she was insinuating that people voted for Nadia because Andrea posts here a lot (as opposed to purely on the merit of her performance and/or character). She noted that Nadia had only appeared in one episode, but JY voted for Danielle (who had also only appeared in one episode) yet it was obvious she was already a fan of Mira Furlan.* When I said "back off my girl," note the punctuation was not "back off, my girl." I was saying "back off of Nadia." That's all. I didn't mean to sound defensive. I suppose JY was not "putting down" other peoples' choices, but she was certainly qualifying them, which I didn't think was cool. I never intended for this to turn so yucky. And Andrea, Christian, or Dustin (if you're reading this), I hope this display of yuckiness does not discourage you from coming back and posting with us in the future, although I could understand how it might.* :-\* Many of us really do appreciate the time you spend here and hope you come back soon. And I don't think June was saying it was a bad thing if people were voting for "Nadia" *just* because Andrea posts here. The fact that Andrea cares enough to do that is both going to attract fans she already had prior to doing LOST and will win her more fans. So her participation here will likely get her more votes in the poll (although it might not, if she were a terrible actress - which she's not). This isn't a bad thing, it's just a thing. I think it's great that she participates here.

Knowing Mira, I think it's unlikely that she'll ever drop by The Fuselage, not that she doesn't like her fans, the internet simply isn't her thing.

I had never seen Mira Furlan before 'Lost', so I had no idea who she was, but I was riveted by her performance. Think about it - she's portraying someone who has had no human contact (that we know of) for 16 years, and suddenly is forced to try and connect with someone (Sayid). I thought she was amazing. Actually, even though she's only been in one episode, I consider her more of a major character. She's been there longer than anyone else! (that we know of, hehe)

oh, yeah, I voted for Danielle - lots of layers there. Can you imagine what it will be like if Danielle ever meets everybody?
I like Rose a lot, but her character seems rather transparent, unless she's a wolf in sheeps clothing.

Thanks for voting. Its still a close race. I'm kinda surprised that a couple of the characters don't have more votes. Ethan is pretty important to the story so far. I guess he's too mean to be someone's "favorite" though.

Now Danielle is the most interesting. She knows more about the island than anybody who was on Oceanic 815. Despite that, my favorit character is Rose, for her deep love and abiding faith.

Ethan is my favorite non-major character simply because between his menace and his mystery, he adds a tremendous amount of potential to the storyline.* He scares even Locke (which says a lot); he seems superhuman in strength and is ruthlessly single-minded in what he wants; and his origins and intentions have given us some of the best suspense so far this season.* I am sooooo hoping they bring him back (if just in flashbacks if not more--this is Lost after all, anything is possible!).* *

Also, I am a big William Mapother fan (to the point where I built him a fan site) and I love him in this role.* He gives good badass.* :)

My favourate non-major character is - Grain of Sand third from left - his best scene is when Hurley kicked him and he flew about 3.5 feet - that was a classic moment :lol2:

Finally got off my duff and voted for Danielle.* Since I'm already a Mira Furlan fan, I was admittedly not particularly impartial, but that's the way it is.* I'd like to think that I'm objective enough to say so if her performance was subpar, but as it hasn't been, IMO, there's no need.

Given that, the 'Danielle' character was originally advertised as a potential 'arc', so she has more meat to her than most.* I think that would give any good actress portraying her more to work with, perhaps, than the other non-majors.* It might be a little unfair trying to determine favorites when both 'one-off' characters and ones the writers intended to be recurring are on the list.* If they were separated, I'd say that Nadia was my favorite single appearance character, for example.

Yeah, but the only thing is, we don't know who is going to recur and who's not. We kind of knew that Danielle would because of the "arc" comment on the breakdown, (and Jack's dad and Rose, of course) but now I have the distinct feeling (and now that Sayid has her picture back-- hooray!!) we'll be seeing Nadia again. Maybe "we'll find her again in the next season, if not in this one..." (LOL-- crosses fingers). But you have a good point about the single episode guest stars, since sometimes we can sense there's little to no chance of seeing them more episodes; like the woman Sawyer was going to con, the bankrobber boyfriend, the shrimp guy, Walt's mom, etc.

Very true. It is my hope that flashbacks will allow many of the guest characters to come back--Sayid has another episode coming, maybe Nadia will be in that one--but who knows for sure? Even the dead characters (like Jack's dad) have popped up from time to time, so you can't write anyone off.

He was in Felecity...I use to watch that show. I really liked it and I don't know why.....

My favorite non-major character so far is Rose. I was really happy to see that interview that said we'd be seeing more of her in the future. :) I'm liking Danielle more now though - I would loved to have seen more of the conversation between her and Hurley.

My vote went to Danielle.* I find the actress and the character to be compelling and powerful.* In the first episode she appears in, in which she captures Sayid, I kept thinking "omg, Emmy, there's an Emmy right there!", as all her scenes reached out and grabbed me by the heart.* Danielle, fer shuuur, is my fave non-regular and I fervently hope that she will become a regular part of the ensemble cast next season!

P.S.* Also, in her scenes with Hurley (who I adore!) in a later episode, she once again managed to reach through the screen and grab hold of the viewer's emotions, manipulating them at will!* When Danielle is on screen, you can't look away.* She is vulnerable and amazingly strong at the same time, which is a dynamic I've always been captivated by and loved about the actress Jody Foster.* I feel that the actress who plays Danielle has that same quality of a vulnerability that instantly pulls you in and makes you relate to her, and a strength that also impresses you, especially when combined with the aforementioned vulnerability.* Danielle rules.

It just hit me that at least 5 of the 12 people currently listed in our poll are dead. That is not including Nadia, who is questionable on her living status, and Claire's psychic. Some of these characters will probably continue to be on the show (through flashbacks obviously, although with Lost you never know), but I wonder if characters like Steve and Ethan will ever be on the show again. If not, I guess their poll numbers are about as high as they will go. I've noticed a tendency for someone's votes to go up when they are part of the week's cast. Will Steve, Ethan, or any of the other dead characters come back to see us again?

if Danielle is working with the others, as some people have said. I am assuming that she is the one who took Claire's baby. Only can think of 2 reasons why 1- she is working for or has been infected by the others (scratches on her arm that Locke noticed make me wonder that) or 2- she thinks the others are going to infect/kill the castaways and she took the baby thinking she could keep him safer.

I don't think I ever answered this! My favourite non-major character is Christian Shepard. He's been in 4 lost episodes so far...and although his character isn't the nicest of guys....I just think the actor is brilliant...and his character has had such a prescence even though he's only appeared in flashbacks...oh yeah, and as a 'ghost' ;)

Dustin, I mean no disrespect at all! I think all of you are wonderful, from Matthew Fox to the background characters to the writers and producers of the show. It is a true pleasure to watch Lost every Wednesday night and I am bored to death right now because there are not new episodes.
Having said that, I just wonder why some characters such as Nadia, your character, and Steve get so much attention for your actions on the show when you've had such little coverage so far. That's not to say that I don't still like you, or envy your role on Lost. I just don't see how you three (and Rose) have such a large fan following when you're not one of the major speaking role characters. Kudos to you my friend for responding on these websites and talking to your loyal fanbase. And I suspect that is why you all have such a large fanbase. Any way, I mean no harm, just voicing my opinion about my poll thus far. If that stirs controversy, then so be it. That is what this website is all about.

Gypsyme, your point is well taken. Although I have not personally attacked anyone or anybody's opinion, I just asked for a reason behind people's votes. This is a poll AND thread board. I'm trying to spark conversation and I personally do not understand why people are voting the way they are. I am just asking for voters to explain their vote. Not so I can attack them as you have just done to me, but to better understand other people's opinions.

As far as my votes went, my official vote went to the character of Ethan, as I found that character to be totally mesmerising, and intriguing. William played the role of Ethan amazingly well, and I am still not convinced of Ehtan's 'badness' as I really don't think everything adds up to him being the 'bad guy' Charlie said he was. Either way, good or evil, Ethan was great on the screen! If it turns out that Ethan was the devil incarnate, I will still love the character he was.

My unofficial vote went to Scott, as I found, and still find, the who really died...Steve or Scott story to be one that I really hope will be expounded on next season. It's not just about the fact that Dustin spends a heck of a lot of time on this board talking with us guys, or his amazing humility, or even his fantastic smile, although all that helps admittedly ;D

I am perhaps strange in the respect that I like to look at what is going on in the background of a scene, and I see Scott in most of them. It makes me want to know more about the people I see doing things and working out of the limelight. I want to know the story of Scott & Steve, all we know so far is that the one who died may or may not be called Steve ??? I want to know how they are surviving, what relationships they are forming - Sawyer dropped the gem that Scott has a married lady cuddling up to him every night...I want to know about that stuff as well as the main stories.

I think that this poll does underscore the worth of a strong fan base, regardless of the size of the role or whether the actor participates with fans regularly or not. It helps immeasurably to nurture and maintain a fan base if the performer finds the time and means to interact with the fans (within reasonable limits), but sadly there are many who just don't see the value. Not that it makes them bad people--it's just that not all of them see the long-term importance, IMO.

I voted for Danielle. I'm a long time Mira Furlan fan, and she's the whole reason I started watching the show.

I ended up getting hooked on the mysteries and appreciating the talent of a lot of the other cast members.

Had Mira not been playing Danielle, I'd have voted for Rose, so I totally get why she's in second place, and I wouldn't have been surprised to see her in first. I think L. Scott Caldwell is a terrific actress (Hello? Tony award!!), and I really hope she'll be back next season.

I very much appreciate all the talent that hangs around The Fuselage, from the producers and writers through the regular cast, and the recurring or one shot characters as well. And I've been around the business long enough to know that it's not a bad idea for actors who are trying to build a name for themselves to build a strong fan base, those people may very well support your career for a very long time. Andrea and Dustin have been saavy enough to do this, it's great to have them around, and if people vote for them because of it, it can only be a good thing. I'll certainly remember Dustin's name for a long time because he was nice enough to come play with us. Andrea I'd have remembered anyway, because I remember watching her parents on the soaps, and her father was a *really* good looking guy.

Its interesting that the pilot has had a surge of votes lately since "The Pilot" episodes were rerunning the last couple of weeks. I wonder if others will do the same in their shows (ex: Nadia, Scott and Steve, Rose, etc...)

Considering she wasn't able to be in the later episodes of season 1 because she was busy doing a play (not due to dissatisfaction with her performance), I would imagine the probability of her appearing in season 2 depends upon her schedule. I'd love to see her back, especially if the spoilers I've heard are true that survivors from the tail section--maybe Rose's hubby Bernard?--will be found.

I voted for Danielle, but, personally, I don't consider her a non-major character. Sure, she isn't in the show too often, and shes not on the cover of the season 1 dvd set, but, she knows a lot, and she will , and has, come in handy.

I think I just prefer characters on the island, the ones that are affecting the current plot twists and events (Ethan, Danielle) rather than the flashback characters who have sculpted the main characters into their individual situations.

Yes, I've heard John Terry's name mentioned all over the place lately! Another month and William Mapother will be popping up everywhere, on Fox's The Inside in late August/early September and on CBS's Threshold starting Sept. 2 (for an undetermined # of episodes). More Lost alumni than you can shake a stick at. :)

I went with Jack's father. I am always compelled when John Terry has scenes w/anyone. He started off self absorbed & buried in his own megalomaniacal cosmology. Then in Outlaws & DNH we see this flash of a man Jack respected & looked up to. So he isn't just a one dimensional villain. Not to mention the psychological, emotional, & dramatic richness in the scenes w/Jack & Sawyer make me anticipate the next time we see dad ;) Even though what he did to Jack amounted to emotional abuse :( he's still a great character.

While I loved the show from the beginning, she completely brought something that the show needed.
Ethan would be second because he was a great scary, inhumanly strong villain, I mean he crushed Scott/ Steve with his hands
Rose would probably come in third, mostly because she is this real person trying to be normal and slightly doesn't care about the weird things going on around her.
Steve/ Scott would be fourth and I am not really saying one of them specifically and not just because I have no clue which is which. I do love them because I don't know which is which. The first episode with them when they had he's Scott, i'm Steve whatever they have had a place in my heart because that is just a great running joke. And then to learn they said the wrong name at the funeral for the one that died, makes it really sad. I also like that that the one that is alive isn't more prominent right now. It's great that he is still that guy they see everyday and can't remember his name. And you gotta love the actors that play those 2 parts because they get so little attention but they are always there just doing there thing giving a sense or continuity, making it a real place where you know you are going to see the same people each time, but I have always loved the underdog.

Aaron! Of course, it's the baby! The baby provokes an interesting side of people that helps bring out their real characters--like Charlie protecting him from lies, that is vital to the various story plots. Plus he is a real cutie---that smile amidst all the disasters and plots going on shows why babies are such a big part of life---they always put it in perspective. Look forward to seeing a lot more of him! Anxious to see about his being born on a special island will mean special powers, grows abnormally, or what...saw his picture in Entertainment Weekly--tell us who he is!
