All these theories, internet clues, book tie-ins, secret background clues, strange connections to astronomy, bhudism, and WWII. Everything about the show is there for the sole purpose of making you want to watch it more. Form interviews, they've said that coming up with the main idea for the show wasn't amazingly complicated, that the whole hatch part was added in afterwards, and that Jack wasn't even supposed to be the central character.

It goes without saying that everything I've been reading here, and I've been caught up in it too, is exactly what the producers want. The whole mystery of the island is like a riddle from one of those books. They give you enough information to want to guess at it, but not enough to ever figure it out until you read the answer and go "doh! I should've known that!".

In all likelihood, the show will end with the remaining survivors getting off the island and the whole thing never being explained, but left up to the possibility of future spin-offs (comics, novels, etc.) or sequels.

My theory: The island is simply a story universe (like dune, lord of the rings, etc.) created by ABC as a marketing launch pad for future products. As long as they keep making money, they never need to even hint at its truth. Possibly, the creators never actually solved the mystery themselves, figuring the way to make it most appealing was to even make it a mystery to themselves.

EDIT: This doesn't mean I don't actually enjoy the watching the show, but not as much as last season.

believe what you want, but i've read that JJ always wanted them to discover a hatch. either way, the writing is still top notch and it's a helluva ride!

I agree in a sense that the ABC will want the show to 'tread water' as much as possible and only reveal small amounts of the main plot to keep people coming back for more. I just hope it doesn't get crazy, such as we never see the full 'monster' until the 8th season or something like that. Or it just creates more questions instead of providing any answers.

Renius,
Well, first thing is, you are missing the real reason the show is a hit. The same thing a lot of people who don't watch the show, don't understand. The is not about the mysteries, those are just gravy. It's an incredibly well written (as speaker pointed out) character based drama with riveting storylines and compelling characters. If it did not start there, the mysteries would be hollow and uninteresting.

Last season, I will admit, I enjoyed the fact that show was only about it's storyline. Now, thanks to it's popularity the ABC/Disney market department has it's claws in it and they are starting to come up with ways to try and profit from it.

LOST just better not get to the point where they're throwing in crazy stuff and never solving anything just to keep us watching. Hopefully that day will never come; let's see how Season Two goes.

If they were just making it up as it went along, I would laugh my head off. That's pretty funny.

They could be just making it all up as they go. I can't say that would bother me if the story continues to be interesting, I fear it is becoming X-files though, which is really bad.

All I know is that I look forward to the show each week and am constantally wondering what will happen next.

All I know is that one could write a hell of a TV show with all the ideas and theories these threads! Hmmm.

No doubt it's mega marketing for alot of products. I excelled in marketing and I can't say as I blame them at all. Look at the captive audience created by the internet. I was saying to friends that alot of shows could do the same as having internet "clues" and the like. I just got back into using the internet a couple months ago and somehow got "sucked" into the LOST excitement (I LOVE to do research and mysteries.).
I keep wondering how it is for someone with no internet access. I guess there is enough there for the non-computer fan base to stand on it's own as I got into the show last year without following it via internet, but now...whoa. I was going nuts and spending too much time looking up clues. I say "was" 'cause I think while with no new eppies during reruns, the fire's died down and it's not as hyped up as I'm sure that's the case for many.
I'm thinking I'll try to watch the show without the internet and see if it can stand on it's own...
But I know I'll be back.
Hmmmmmm...Maybe THIS is the sickness Desmond and Danielle mentioned.
hehehe

I going to love the very last scene showing J.J. Abrams waking up under a palm tree in Hawaii having dreamed the whole thing.

Better yet, they'll pull a St. Elswhere and he'll have a tropical snowglobe (is that possible) which he will set down on his desk as he heads to a meeting in accounting
