Well, 5 episodes down, around 19 left. I've noticed a lot of people feeling disappointment over the last few episodes, and to be honest, I was kind of disappointed in the last 4 episodes as well. Here's what I think happened - episode one was mindblowing, IMO the last scene was the single best scene I've ever seen on a television show. Ever since then, the episodes haven't been able to meet the extremely high expectations that episode one left us with. However, watching the episodes a second time, without having to worry about how good the episode will be, worrying whether or not there will be a huge cliffhanger, makes the season much more enjoyable for me, as I am able to slightly lower the somewhat unfair expectations that I have for the episode, and can really appreciate it.

Also, I will admit that I have been disappointed by the flashbacks as well, especially Locke's and Hurley's. We now know that their flashbacks are extremely important in the course of the show, and it leads to an empty feeling when their flashbacks dont really contribute anything to the storyline. Likewise, seeing a flashback like Michael's or Sun/Jin that as of now has no importance whatsoever also leads to a sort of frustration, and these episodes are immediately "fillers." Argh...if only we could learn to just enjoy an episode, even if nothing important plotwise is revealed.

That being said, however, I think it was a very poor decision to go on a two week break after airing episode 5. No matter how many time I watch it, it's still probably the worst lost episode so far, and I think that there should at least be an attempt at a cliffhanger before going on a two week break. I really hope, however, that episode 6 can pick up at the pace where episode one left off, as the last 4 really have been incredibly slow moving. Let's see more Sayid, more Clair, more Charlie, more Shannon, and just a *few* more answers revealed. I understand that the producers and writers can't reveal things too fast, however going through a few weeks of very little surprises, boring flashbacks, and misleading previews, I think we deserve to be rewarded with a few "Raised by Another" or "Man of Science" episodes :)....regardless, I still think that Lost is the best show to ever hit television, and I hope it continues to boggle our minds for years to come.

Thanks for reading! Comments?

Ilove LOST, and I fell asleep during the episode with Michael and Sawyer on the raft. It was bad. But, I did like the Jin/Sun flashbacks, because you see that Jin wasn't always such a jerk.

I have loved every episode this season. I haven't been bored at all!!

I guess I love the show for the characters, not for the cliffhangers or the constant
'clues'.

sure, I love it when we get those things, but it's not about that for me.

I love watching John and Jack interact, or James and whomever. THAT is
why I love the show.

lockeisthekey, I think you read my mind. I've loved every episode this season, too. I guess it's just because I don't care if we have a question answered every episode, I love to watch the characters interact and see how they deal with their problems, each other, etc.

I'm with you guys. It could take years and I'd be thrilled with that.

Well, I have been disappointed in the predictability of the flashbacks, and the poor setups and payoffs of the dramatic character work this season. I don't really watch Lost for the mystery, I watch it for what last season was VERY solid character writing. This season is just not as strong in that department so far.

Word.

The character writing is off signifcantly from last season. My own speculation is that they now have way too many characters to focus on. Most dramas have, at most, 5 or 6 characters. This show has nearly 20. :o With 24 episode seasons, you cannot get too detailed about any single person.

I think it would help alot if they consciously push some of the "main characters" into the background and focus on, say the five that are most important to the storyline.

The catch in doing this is I suspect that most of the actors pushed to background status would probably depart the show. I think it was Maggie Grace who commented in an interview recently that you can't really do other acting work in Hawaii.

To your second point, the flashbacks have been predictable. But we now know these characters' pasts, so we probably won't get shockers akin to Walkabout again, at least not with the original fuselage crew.

i agree with Tink - those scenes were surprisingly bad.

I guess it's kind of hard to tell at this point if the flashbacks from the last few episodes actually helped in developing the characters at all...I really don't think we learned anything about Jin, I never really thought he had always been a jerk.

I really don't think we learned anything about Jin.

We learned that Jin lived with his best friend. We learned that Jin worked at a hotel in Seoul. We learned that he almost was fired from his job because he was nice enough to let a poor boy use the hotel bathrooms. And we learned about Sun, too. We learned that her parents desperately wanted her to get married. We learned that she studied art history in college. We learned that Lee let her down, after she finally thought that she had met a decent man. And we learned that Jin and Sun met by coincidence. (Well, I guess that one is really not too important ) And while some would say that these are not important things to the show at the moment, who knows? They might come into play later in a big way.

I think season 2 has started off great.

We learned what was in the hatch, new clues about Dharma, Desmond
We learned that were tail survivors on the island, one being Rose's husband. (That was a cliffhanger for me)

As far as flashbacks, Im not into disecting every episode for a clue, sure I tivo that for later, I simply enjoy the episode for what it offers, the characters "character", example, Hurley was put in charge of the food, not by his choosing, What would you do? A friend finds out you are in charge of food, do you sneak only to them, to all, or hoard it like Sawyer might have, and that would have not been a fantastic episode. We needed to see his self esteem in his flashback with Starla, after winning the lottery, his buddy, promising, please don't let things change until he gets recognized that he was the winner to the surprise of his friend. (Would'nt things probably worked out differently if he had told his friend off the bat, Hey I won the lotto, Im outta here, would the friend still have suggested to goof off with Hurley, those were the best hours of his life, till he was found out. We saw how Hurley struggled with the decision of being told not to give it all away, ration it per se. And at the end, he shares with all, he cannot be selfish to friends only, or face the wrath if the survivors found out he was in charge.

Sun and Jin was excellent too, when he left, it was still a strained relationship between them, since Jin found out she spoke English, someone mentioned in an earlier post, they never disliked Jin, I personally did at first, thought he was very controlling of Sun, why couldn't she interact with others on the island, until later flashbacks came to show he was leaving to get away from her father and keep Sun and himself safe to begin their marriage without the father's presence, which he is an evil man. Sun desperate to find her ring, thinking perhaps all she has left of her beloved, reinforcing her love for him. I also liked Jin standing up to Eko, normally I viewed him quiet, reserved, with the one exception with Michael over the watch. But now, we see him interacting actively with Michael and Sawyer, and defending them too. (Just as he would not lower himself at the Seoul Gateway Hotel to the owner by refusing to let "commoners" as Jin was permitted to use the bathroom, you can only push him so far.

I think too many read into the clues and want the clue answers more than the character answers, and characters have to have character to them (What makes them tick)IMO.

But, to our point, why is Jin living with his best friend important to the story? Or that he got fired for being nice to country folk? Of course, this stuff might come back at some point during the story....maybe his roommate is a Dharma operative. But for now, it seems trivial to the story of the show.

Actually, I think the most important thing in that flashback was that fate seemed to bring Sun and Jin together. Fate plays an important part in the show. That Sun and Jin were destined to be together was an interesting fact.

Well, you could say that Jin's friend helped him find Sun, because if it wasn't for his friend telling him that "Love is orange", he never would have run into Sun. But anyway, I can understand where you're coming from about some things seeming trivial to the show.

Good point. Didn't really think about that.

I've really enjoyed Season 2. I particularly loved the 1st 3 episodes as a unit. Revisiting what happened in the hatch from different perspectives was incredible, each perspective adding slightly to our knowledge while adding more mystery and questions (typical!) I also feel that the "Orientation" filmstrip was the coolest thing on the show since the crash, that few minutes of screen time has fueled more questions and theories than anything else thus far.
I do think that the new mysteries and the introduction of Desmond and the tailies has taken away from the time spent getting to know "our" characters. Let's hope the upcoming episodes gets us back to them some more and answers some questions, like what happens when you don't push the button!

I agree that the hatch scenes were great, but it's the other stuff that was lacking, the raft scenes were terrible and the flashbacks were boring...I DO hope we see desmond again

I think the problem here is that we're suffering from withdrawls. It's been three weeks or re-runs. I think that had ABC employed non-morons in their network programming department we'd all be much happier. Remember what ABC did with "NYPD Blue"? They kept moving it from night to night each season, starting it late into the season.
They don't have enough episodes to go non-stop through the May sweeps and instead of footing the bill for a few more episodes or being a little more creative with their schedule in October they gave us three weeks off.

The season is keeping the momentum established in the last four episodes of season 1, so there's not much time for charictor developement. Plus they divided the Lostaways so you have two seperate storylines and it's hard for any show to pull that off, but IMO they've done a good job of keeping it moving. Desmond set up the theme for season two, the Tail section gang will enhance it and at some point we'll get a plot twist and the fun will continue.

I have no complaints overall about this season so far - I tend to look at things overall and not part by part. I think I'd like it less if there were major clear definitive answers each week - because thats all part of the mystery of the show. I watch because I like the whole mystery of it and the whole scenario - and how we are left with all sorts of questions. I don't watch it for a specific character or actor although I've come to like some characters more than others. I can't say that there's been an episode that didn't somehow add something - because I really think there's been something significant in every episode - though maybe we wont know until a later time that something was important. I also think its good that they're not sticking to the same recipe of storytelling each week - it varies with the story and I think thats a good thing. I'm also glad that there are weeks that there's no new episodes, because in the long run it means less time between seasons. If it ran as 24 weeks straight - we'd have a lot more time of nothing new.
end of comments :)

I really think there's been something significant in every episode - though maybe we wont know until a later time that something was important.

This is what I think everytime I read a post where someone is unhappy that the flashbacks didn't reveal anything. Everybody think back to when you first saw the Jack episode where he runs into Desmond training for his race around the world. You probably thought "Wow, that guy Desmond called it. Jack fixed Sarah; how did Desmond know?" or something similar. All of a sudden, Desmond shows up in the hatch on the island! Where did THAT come from?

What if in a future episode, we see Sun's date (Mr. Lee I believe) married to Kate? That would make the Jin/Sun flashback a lot more interesting, don't you think? What if we see Hurley's boss at the chicken place on the island too?

Now, neither of those will happen, more than likely, but the writers have proven they're good with shocking us by twisting the plot and paths of the characters in crazy ways. At this point, I'm content to take in each new episode, let my mind run rampant with possibilities, and be confounded when I'm still surprised by the next twist.

If you're one of the people who are disappointed that the flashbacks are boring this season, try watching them in the mindset that something from them will end up being extremely important later. Try figuring out what that something is. I'm positive Mr. Lee and Hurley's friend are more than just one-episode characters; I can't wait to see what the future holds.

Although I do ffind the latest flashbacks boring, I do respect daullaz's comment where he stated that we should try to think of them as being important later on. However, once everything is all said and done, I really do hope that you are right. If not, there's sure as hell going to be a lot of forwarding scenes when we rewatch our old DVDs. I just hope that the producers don't feel obligated to have flashbacks in EVERY episode, because then that will almost certainly mean that there is a lot of stuff just thrown in there.

I hope they DO feel obligated to have flashbacks every episode! But I am also of the belief that some of the information in the flashbacks will be important later. Or at least I hope so! I've really enjoyed this season so far, and I think that the pace of answers and clues will pick up a little during sweeps. I/we just have to patient! Not easy with this show, but that's why I love it!

I remember how some marvelously written series such as the X-Files started off with a bang and went off to great complication after great triumpth. This show will have to kill off characters, always, and bring in new characters, always. The actors that get booted off, for what ever, reason will hopefully have a great future ahead of them. Plus we will get to see them possibly return in "flashbacks" maybe, like they said they might do with Boone's character. Killing off the characters a little at a time will always keep us guessing, who would be next, and, I'll bet we won't be very happy about some of them. Just IMO. Either way, I enjoy every minute and every detail. If it weren't For "THE FUSELAGE" interaction, I would be LOST

I have been enjoying season 2 so far, the only problem I have is that they decided to take a 3 week break so early in the season... that's just a bad idea on ABC's part. And to take a break after ...And Found... even worse idea. Didn't really leave much to speculate over for those 3 weeks... I know some of the topics have felt kind of forced during the break. Well, we'll be back into it on Wendesday I know! Can't wait for that.

I think we need to look at the big picture here. Last season was season one. It steamrolled out, setting the stage for what is to come. So the episodes, and flashbacks, were jampacked full. This season, we're getting more into character development, letting things slowly unfold. The quality is just as fantastic, but you can't expect the momentum to be like last year. Last year, they were drawing us in, and trying to keep us there. It was a new show. And now we are hooked and we want the momentum to continue. But would it really be as satisfying this season? Or next? I don't think so. I want it to be long and drawn out. I like collecting the questions, trying to piece things together. Wondering if some of the theories batted around here might pan out. I think this season has been fantastic. Seeing the interior of the Swan Station, meeting Desmond, finding out there were tail section survivors, those mysterious "Other legs"....so many more questions, so many more mysteries, so many more theories.... No other show has made me think as much, obsess as much, ponder as much. I love it. Let it continue. Let it unfold. I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the ride.

I love season 2. I think the flashbacks are good. Last years flasbacks were used to introduce us to the characters history. These flashbacks seem to be focusing on describing the characters current actions... like Hurley's problem with being the one who inventories the food, Michaels reaction to losing Walt again, Locke's "leap of faith", Jin and Sun's love for one another...

It is like reading a really good novel where an author needs to get into background and uses slow sections to heighten the awareness and excitement of the good sections.... A novelist controls the speed of a novel to create a level of anticipation that is needed to make the really big impacts.

Although I have to admit, the raft scenes with Sawyer and Michael did seem like poor writing with all those one liners... That in combination with some over acting...

This isn't a sitcom... lets be patient and enjoy

well I really think tonight we will be rewarded for our wait, I just REALLY hope the show lives up to its hype in the preview..because honestly, although I love the show, this season they have had a problem of basically putting the only exciting parts of the episodes in the preview, making us think its gunna be a killer episode when in reality you get...the others' legs and a bunch of korean
