I think it's a definite clue of some sort from the producers possibly foretelling something down the line...

The numbers that we have seen repeated over and over again were:
4 8 15 16 23 42

The tail's first number would be 3....Then 9 for the number of people captured on the 14th night.

What is the significance of these numbers? Who knows, but just as the original 48 members of the front of the plane had their numbers...I'm wondering if the tailenders have their own as well....

very interesting idea....although I don't think the creative team is going to introduce a second series of numbers--we've barely even scratched the surface on the significance of the original numbers, and introducing a new sequence to the mix seems like it would overly-complicate things. The increase in the number of kidnapped tail-enders may very well be a significant plot point in the future, though.

but if u noitce by just the 3 numbers given in this eppie. Its a number before or right after the original number Before 4 is 3, After 8 is 9, before 15 is 14, After 16 would be 17, Before 23 would be 22, and After 42 would be 43. 3 9 14 17 22 43

Maybe they do have their own set of numbers. I mean the hatch the tailies were in was not as high tech as the one Desmond was in but who knows

They were only 23 to begin with, she said it was 9.

Perhaps these new numbers have significance in the sense to what happened to "our" lostaways on these days...

... yeah, what DID happen to them? I can't remember... only that during the first night we heard the monster sound for the first time.

Newbie here... so forgive me if this post is a bit: off topic, too late, and/or recurring. Just wondering if I can add something old about the new numbers. Ana Lucia said the first night (thats 1) the others took 3, then waited 14 days and took 9...
1 + 3 = 4
14 + 9 = 23
15 days and twelve people. Five are left. We still don't what happened to the other six, when, and how many days did it take for them to "disappear". Then three "non-tailenders" join them making it 8.
One new abductee last episode. Was it day 41 for them at the island last episode? Or maybe something like that?
Could it be possible that there is some sort of pattern here? The way the "others" hunt and attack the survivors?
Again, just wondering... maybe it's just the 8 beers I had...

Just throwing this out there. In the scene where Jin meets Sun, there's a banner hanging on the bridge. It's mostly in Korean, but there are the numbers 5, 7 and 9. I believe those were the numbers on it anyway.

It's an interesting idea, but I doubt that the writers would create another set of numbers, since they haven't even explained the original numbers.

They began with 48.

I read somewhere, last year before it ever premiered, that at some point they had toyed with "The 48" being the title, but settled on "LOST".

Well our current numbers are

4 8 15 16 23 42

and possibly the other numbers were

3 9 14

3 = (4-1)
9 = (8+1)
14 = (15-1)

Pattern?

17 = (16+1)
22 = (23-1)
43 = (42+1)

So maybe there numbers are -

3 9 14 17 22 43

Maybe its the fact that none of the tail enders knew the numbers like Hurley knew as the reason why there were attacked.

I'm guessing this has been posted a zillion times before. Dudes, according to TPTB we might never know the meaning of "The Numbers"....


Will we get any clarification about the numbers this season?

Damon: Carlton might want to punch me for actually going on record and saying this, but I think that that question will never, ever be answered. I couldn't possibly imagine [how we would answer that question]. We will see more ramifications of the numbers and more usage of the numbers, but it boggles my mind when people ask me, "What do the numbers mean?"
