View Full Version : Mid-Robbery Make Out Session
McGuane 01-06-2005, 12:28 AM The group I watched with decided tonight that Kate is meant to be sort of a campy character, not at all to be taken seriously. We rolled with laughter when she and scruffy roughy stopped mid-robbery for a quick make out session! Girl does love those deep kiss scenes at the darnest times!
Also we got a good laugh when she exclaimed, "No one gets hurt!" just before popping a cap into the guts of two of her partners in crime and shooting bf in the leg! As one of my co-watchers pointed out, at least she didn't bark out "Hey!" to get the guys to stop being naughty on the bank manager, like she always does with the island guys! And I swear, we were just waiting for her to sharply inform the other robbers, "I'm coming along guys!"
But seriously, we actually LIKED Criminal Kate, by far the most interesting her character has ever been to us. And even were not bored by the Kate/Jack interaction tonight. IMO, just having Sawyer in proximity of those two brings them down 200 points on the boredom meter.
In fact, while it was not among the top eps, we enjoyed this part of Kate's story much more than we thought we would.
Too bad we were so disappointed by the other parts - the creepy lack of effort to look for or care about Claire, and the total dropping of the metal box plot.
And before all you Instant Gratification Police post to tell me that I should just go watch Reality TV, I say again that the piling up of questions and clues without answers is approaching dangerous territory.
Dagirlindajeans 01-06-2005, 12:34 AM I gotta say, I thought it was utterly ridiculous. I was so going WTF? How obvious do you want it to be? I was thinking it when they first showed the flashback, that she was running it.
We just discovered the metal box in AtBCHDI. *I think the episode would have been full of way too much important info, and seemed cluttered.
McGuane 01-06-2005, 12:40 AM I guess while including the info from the last new ep would have seemed cluttered to you, NOT including it seemed disjointed and out of sequence to me.
The very point I'm making, and yes call me the Captain of Team Instant Gratification and Reality TV, is why introduce so much MORE info before completing, or even addressing, the previously introduced info?
We are accumlating quite a pile of loose ends, and it is a real challenge to both the writers and the viewers to keep us even remembering, much less caring, when they return to any particular loose thread to tie it up.
Loose ends for loose ends sake and because NOT tying things up is all edgy and cool can only go so far. At some point, my simple mind just gets confused.

I thought the kissing in mid-robbery was silly and took me out of the story for a bit.

Prncssleia 01-06-2005, 02:24 AM We did see the metal box...Boone & Locke are hiding that they're digging for it and have been for 4 days. It looks like it comes into play very heavily in the next ep.
Here are my reasons for believing they HAD to put off the metal box sequence:
1. From the teaser we know :: Locke and Boone are standing over it, and Boone wants to tell someone about it...and Locke cold-cocks him. This is probably pretty important and deserves an ep all its own
2. They are using "looking for Claire" as an excuse to excavate this thing. It's not going to happen overnight by the looks of it.
So I think they needed some time to dig this thing out and they decided to put some fluff about Kate and a toy plane in there.
We saw a little more of the box...and I think that was the only mystery that was even shown- let alone answered....
(since Kate is now a proven liar- so who knows if that woman actually murdered someone.)
I'm going to have another go at the ep tomorrow and I'll see if I dislike it any less.

The 'obviousness' of anything in the episode is just setting you up. As for the Kate camp....it was a show! She played whatever part the other guy wanted her to.
Seems thats Kate's roll, mostly.
As for the pile of loose ends...its barely started. And like i said before, all the loose ends and open ended plot archs will more then likely tie together in one knot.
Its clear, to me at least, that all of their mysteries are connected. We find out bits and pieces of each of them so we see how the reveal affects them all.
Interesting how the Instant Gratification stood out amongst so many of our arguments. Wouldnt being antsy about building arcs and the inablility to let ones self play the detective to sort through all the clues point to the need for instant resolution?
What did you expect here? The great Claire return? Kate, the central character, revealing her whole history? What would you say about the interest level of episode, say, 20 if everything was resolved so quickly?
The quicker one arc is ended, the sooner another begins. One long arc that branchs out to include them all...or 100 arcs with zero exposition?
gameoverman 01-06-2005, 02:58 AM That setup(Kate being in on it) doesn't work for alot of reasons.
But I thought they did at least excuse the makeout scene by using it to rough up Kate for the benefit of the manager, that way it kinda makes sense. The manager would imagine all kinds of naughty things that I woul...uh I mean that the BANK ROBBER would do to Kate in that office, so he would be pressured to open the vault.
The idea that Kate's plan to get access to that safe deposit box is to hook up with a bank robbing crew, use them to seize control of the bank, then stage this long, time consuming morality play to get the manager to open it up, while all the while being a 'good guy' because she won't stand for an innocent person being killed is way beyond stupid. Yeah she's 'good', that's why she helped gunmen point loaded weapons at all those people, because of course she KNEW no one would get accidentally killed by an itchy trigger finger, that kind of thing NEVER happens. ::)

I happened to like Criminal Kate as well. It was what happened back on the island with Kate that annoyed me. Without going on and on about it... I had the impression that whatever was in the case would be some big reveal, and actually give us some answers like how Jack's second flashback episode did (his episode also tied in nicely with all of the on-island events going on too)... but instead it was a huge let down to me, and left us all with more questions and ZERO answers or "reveals".
Too bad we were so disappointed by the other parts - the creepy lack of effort to look for or care about Claire, and the total dropping of the metal box plot.
I agree that there was a creepy lack of effort to search for Claire, but since the metal box thingie plot happened at the end of the ATBCHDI episode, and only two characters know about it, I didn't feel like it was dropped... rather, just put off for a bit. And the episode did imply that Boone and Locke are hiding it. Claire missing is VERY OBVIOUS, so that plot being put off (and I'm not saying she should be found all of a sudden) was bad, in my opinion. SOMEONE should have actually been looking for her, because my impression was that Boone and Locke were lying about doing so, and now the poor girl's been missing for FOUR DAYS.

fluffynurse 01-06-2005, 08:01 AM Folks, you forget that they had more pressing things to do this eppy. The ocean was getting ready to swallow up the entire fuselage site & all their belongings. The search for Claire will pick back up once daybreak comes now that they are safely tucked higher on shore.
waywardwanderer 01-06-2005, 01:59 PM They did have to worry about the fuselage and everything being swept away and it certainly felt like that was an urgent urgency in my opinion. Plus, I think that other people think that Boone and Locke are looking for Claire. So they HAVE a search party... or so they think. I think that will also become a huge issue coming up soon. That Locke and Boone told people they were looking for claire, but when it's revealed what they were actually doing... man Charlie's gonna go apedoody on them!!
WhiteSapphire 01-06-2005, 02:07 PM OK, was I the only who was thinking during that make-out session: "Wow, I guess she's always like the bad boys; I guess it's a sure thing that she'll end up with Sawyer now"?
And as for searching for Claire, it'll come. Charlie's starting to get better now, so maybe he can even tell people what he's seen soon. If he gets better too quickly, people will complain that it's not realisitic, and while he's taking his time, people complain that the story line is moving too slowly. We have to remember that Sayid and Shannon (all googly looks aside) did make some progress in furthering the Danielle storyline. Sayid was going to just forget about it (probably because the woman, and then the voices, just totally freaked him out) but we saw him working on those papers to try to figure out what she was up to.
desertislandgirl 01-06-2005, 02:12 PM i think the make out wasn't b/c she liked the bad guy. She didn't mind shooting him. I think she was doing what she needed to in order to get her safety deposit box.
EllaStarr 01-06-2005, 02:13 PM ok, this might sound really dumb, but don't banks usually have cameras everywhere? I'm just guessing though, but it seems they were taking big chances by totally making out, and talking about their plans, and saying each other's "names." Of course, I'm probably wrong, but would a little caution hurt? no. very unrealistic.
flora 01-06-2005, 03:20 PM "Don't hold back." Kate likes it ROUGH. ;)
conspiricytheory 01-06-2005, 04:01 PM The make out session ruined the scene for me. I guess it was put in to show that she was in on the whole thing and that she was 'hooked' up with the dude, but it seemed almost corny. Your in the middle of a frickin robbery. Come on.
waywardwanderer 01-06-2005, 09:33 PM I would simply explain the make out session as A.)Adrenaline... I mean they could very easily be caught. and B) She was convincing him that she 'loved' him and wanted to go through with it.
As for the cameras comment, since Kate planned the robbery, I think she probably would have made sure about the camera system. They can't explain every single detail... the show would be like, 5 hours long.
