View Full Version : What's happening to the characters we fell in love with?
TRoss 01-06-2005, 04:06 AM One of the things I love about this show is how it takes a person we might not like right away and shows us why they are the way they are, and it makes us empathize with them, and for the most part I myself find I like them after that when I previously might not have.
But now here's Jack, who you would expect to try and talk to Kate, walking away as she's clearly having problems.
And what about Locke? I loved that they made him kind of a "wise man", as it were. He helped Jack and Charlie, and he seemed to have a great respect for the spirit of the island, as if he knew its grand purpose. Now we see next week he's going to be hitting Boone over the head like a man gone crazy instead of imparting some wisdom to Boone as he did the others. Of course it's just the teaser, you know how unfaithful they can be.
Poor Kate? We've grown to respect the woman who risks her life to help herself and the others get rescued, not to mention she tried to dig Jack out of the cave by hand. And now she deceives Jack, someone she trusts, over an airplane? Couldn't she trust him to give it to her when they opened the case together?
Sawyer - my favorite. Although vgaslady made an hilarious comparison between Sawyer and the gorilla in the American Tourister commercials, I never thought of him as an ignorant redneck. It's my assumption you have to be pretty clever to be a successful con man. Although Sawyer was funny in this episode, he lacked the depth we've seen from him in previous episodes. He's a prime example of how this show can open up someone for us and make them lovable. But will we ever see that side of him again?
I'll give the writers the benefit of the doubt - this is the first "out of character" script for them since the show began (it reminds me of the last episode of Angel). I just hope we don't end up "falling out of love".
Soupysayles 01-06-2005, 04:20 AM You make it sound like these characters can't be human and have flaws. You want them to be one dimensional or something?
Yeah, I was a little disappointed with this new episode as well. The only parts I liked was the Rose and Charlie moments and Hurley's funny comment he made to Sawyer. "Yeah, like you're going to get that open!" (something like that...) They only showed Hurley once and he's also one of my fav. characters. I thought the bank robbery was kinda dumb, sorry, but I thought we were going to see Kate doing something more serious than that. Maybe there is more to this story?... you'll never know. Maybe the airplane doesn't belong to her boyfriend whom she had killed....or maybe it is and maybe like I said that there is more to this story. (Still remains a mystery.)

I like Kate, but respect her? Haha, no. She's a liar and has been since the start, like most of them. She had no trouble keeping secrets from others(like what the pilot said), why should Jack be exempt from that? In terms of character, I think this episode was relatively true to what Kate is all about. The only fake thing to me is the way they contrive these lame attempts to show she REALLY has a heart of gold, like shooting her gang to save the manager of the bank. ::)
Sawyer was an ignorant redneck from the start. Don't you remember the accusation of Sayid as being responsible for the crash? I think the change for his character has been to wimpify him. I thought he was a badass when he stood down the charging polar bear with a handgun, but since then he has been neutered. It seems everyone from Jack to Kate to even Hurley has had their shot at emasculating him.
TRoss 01-06-2005, 05:19 AM You can't get more one-dimensional than an ignorant redneck. But yeah, I guess Jack's and Kate's "flaws" are plausible (what's up with all the Kate-haters? Are you seeing something I can't? Enlighten me). Locke, on the other hand, would be a great loss as a "wise man" (sorry, can't think of a better term at 1am) - I think the castaways need one, and he's one of my favorite characters for that reason. Can't wait to see what happens next week! ;)

Yup...agreed.* Also keep in mind, though, the ninja skills Kate used in quickly taking out the crew but not mortally wounding any of them...so unless it came later, none of them--including the boyfriend--are the person that she loved and killed.* My theory, with absolutely nothing to back it up:* her dad?
But still, Kate got me ALL KINDS of annoyed last night!

That.
Plus what he said in this week's episode.
The easiest way is not always the best.
We have no idea what happened *right* before he ... does what we see in the promo.
Not what happens afterwards.
I don't trust promos *lol*
Should probably stay away from them.
Though I still stand by what I was saying somewhere else ....
Locke is the one who has a very good reason wanting to stay on that island
Ambigious right now.
But as usual... in dubio pro reo.
Yep. Not evil nor bad intentions. =)
goloptious 01-06-2005, 10:02 PM This is the way I look at it. It doesn't matter how good a person is or anything like that. A few days being stranded on an island with no sign of rescue is going to fry your nerves. And then anything could happen. The nicest person could do the worst things, if the conditions were right. So, we are seeing the characters being real. They get frustrated with one another and keep secrets. It's not like they are best friends. They have only known each other for a few days.

Well said goloptious! We have so many more epsiodes to go that we will see our characters go thru many changes. Some may very well be bad, hopefully our most beloved characters survive what looks to be a wild ride! ;D
