Did anyone else notice that the song that Shannon was singing in french at the end of LOST was the same song playing in english in the first couple minutes of ALIAS as Sydney game out of the bathroom in that teddy?

...I can't get that song out of my head... I wish I had a whole tape of Maggie/Shannon singing in french...

LOL! Ha! I didn't notice that at all. I hope it was just that I was tired and haven't seen season 3 yet so was very confused that kept me from getting into the episode of Alias much... I kind of felt like it was all over the place, like "Why are we over here and doing this now what? What? What are we doing? Can we slow down for a minute?" I ended up pretty unengaged... (In fact, I was poking indentions into a bowl candel and then lighting it and watching the wax melt and the indentions form into bubbles and the bubbles drift to the surface of the wax.... over and over...)

Como Wha?

The song at the beginning of Alias was "At Last" by Ella Fitzgerald wasn't it? and Shannon was singing something about The Sea (La Mer). There's a thread here somewhere about the song Shannon sung, it's about the sea if I'm not mistaken and is from Finding Nemo.

Or am I on Crazy Pills again?

Goofee you're right! Now I remember what was played during alias b/c I remember making a comment about how fitting it was for the first song to be At Last since its been 8 months without Alias

I like Alias, but last year (season 3) was a mess. Therefore my favorite line in Wed's premiere was when Vaughn said, "Last year sucked." I do hope this was an acknowledgement that they intend to do better this season.

That said, I was kinda disappointed in Alias... are we seriously supposed to believe that these guys are going to take orders again from Arvin Sloane??

Well, it's spy/fantasy or something, but I do really feel that Arvin Sloane should be in prison. Still, very interesting to see them all work for him...

I loved the Cat Stevens song at the end - interesting political commentary.

The juxtaposition of the two shows had me thinking about who the Lost characters would be if they lived in the world of Alias. *These have to do with general personality traits rather than skill sets.

Kate=Sydney
Jack=Vaughn
Locke=either Jack Bristow or Sloane--can't tell yet
Hurley=Marshall
Danielle=Irina Derevko
Sawyer=Sark
Charlie=Will
Claire=Francie
Sayid=Dixon

and the pilot=Weiss *;)

I have to agree regarding the Alias season premiere. I was barely hanging on as the show hit rock bottom last year, but this sealed it: Alias has been removed from my Tivo season pass list and I won't bother tuning in until the season (or series) finale (which is what I did when X-Files ground to an ugly end).

I used to love this show, and I'm all for laughing off all the various super-human and plot contrivances, but I just ran out of patience waiting for any sort of pay-off from the Rimbaldi plot line and all of Sydney's various relationships (the superb post-Super Bowl episode excluded), and his latest re-set strained any sort of credulity I had left.

Having Sydney (and Dixon and Jack for that matter) go back to work for Sloane was beyond any contrivance. Sloane should be in prison (Hanibal-style) or dead and Sydney should have had justice for his murder of her fiancee. And this should have happened last season, at the latest. (There is literally no way to justify this to the show's loyal viewers, including the so-tired-we-didn't-even-bother-lame "watching him" bit.) Instead JJ went in the exact opposite direction and essentially told his viewers he doesn't respect them and they'll lap up whatever crap he dishes out, as long as there's at least one scene of Sydney wearing lingerie (I admit that might have worked for me before, but not now).

Having Sydney start over with all the same crew in essentially the same situation as season one is not a fresh start. It'd be like season four of Lost started out with the crash-survivors getting aboard another plane and then crash-landing on another weirdo deserted island. It's essentially saying the past three years of the show were a complete waste of time. No new characters, no new villains, no new overarching plots and mysteries, and certainly nothing old resolved or paid off for the viewer--just dragging out all the old crap and starting over from ground zero ad nauseam. What a waste of time.

My hope is he doesn't do the same thing on Lost, but after the last few episodes, I'm skeptical.

no new characters? umm, you forgot Nadia, syd's sister! And it's not a repetition of season 1! it's merely going back to the same 'formula' of script writing if you will.

alias has improved immensely.. just 2 episodes into s4 and i am loving it all over again! the APO black ops division is interesting .. and also different to sd-6 because this is actually run by cia ... not evil meany nasties! there is also the interesting issue of nadia wanting to avenge her mother's death.... and the implications this will have on sydney and nadia's relationship when nadia learns it was syd's father that killed irina.

and of course then there's marshall. who quite simply, makes this show! he is still as quirky and hilarious as ever!

Nah, they lost me. I can't buy in to any of the aspects you brought up--they drew a collective "meh" from me. The dynamics just aren't interesting anymore. They're lauaghably bad, actually.

I agree with Cardie's comparison of characters -- true!

Did you notice that in the bank robbery scene in Lost, Kate said "It's all in the details" ... and in the Singapore bar bathroom scene, Syd said the same thing?

And I totally agree re: Vaughn's line re: "Last year sucked." I completely heard that as a mea culpa from the creative team.

Finally, the scene in which Arvin asks Syd and Dixon to "please, give me a chance", are we supposed to forget that Arvin ordered the murders of Syd's fiance and Dixon's wife? Why don't they just get rid of Arvin ...he is completely worn out as a character.

Nice post! I think you're onto something. It's pretty common, actually, for writers to use the same archetypcal characters over and over again....even if they don't realize they're doing so.
