View Full Version : Goodwyn and "people your age"
shera11 11-17-2005, 01:19 AM Did anyone notice the exchange between Anna Lucia and Goodwyn when he indicates that he is a member of the peace corps? Goodwyn suggests that he is surprised that "someone your age" knows what that is. By the looks of him, Goodwyn cannot be more than 40 or so years old and Anna Lucia is likely in her late 20s or early 30s. There does not seem to be such an age difference between them.... unless Goodwyn is part of the Hanso life extension project and he was really around in the 60's when the peace corps was established (and shortly thereafter fell in with some scientists from the University of Michigan who also might have looked "well preserved" when they stole Walt off the raft).
LockeLove 11-17-2005, 01:20 AM If he has been on the island for a while, he might not even know what year it is. Who knows!
darkpiranha 11-17-2005, 01:28 AM Actor playing Goodwin is 48 or 49
LockeLove 11-17-2005, 01:31 AM It was a strange comment on his part. A lot of people younger than 48 would still know what the Peace Corps are.
darkpiranha 11-17-2005, 01:44 AM I think it was more a reference to the fact that the whole peace movement was much stronger back in the sixties and seventies, which I think is a clue as to the nature or rationale the Others are using to justify their actions.

You know when I first heard it I just passed it off as just someone talking, but the more I think about it the weirder it is...I'm 22 and i know what the Peace Corp is.
I've been thinking about the whispers and the others in conjunction with this. In the whispers before Shannon gets shot you can hear pretty clearly, "she gets shot now." Maybe the others see time differently than others. They seem to be prescient, maybe Goodwyn was seeing AL differently.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm 16 and I know what the peace corps are. I think it's more strange to not know what the peace corps are than to know what they are.

You might have heard of them, but do you know anyone who joined? I think the point
is that the time of the Peace Corps is past. Goodwin sure knew a lot about hunting
rabbits and cooking chickens and making fires, though. He also really wanted that
radio for some reason.

He wanted the radio to take off with it so the tailies couldn't contact anyone and get rescued.
pacejunkie 11-17-2005, 08:43 AM I think this could be an indication that Goodwin is part of the Dharma/DeGroot others who began some utopian hippie experimental commune thing on the island. (Peaceniks!) He really seems to thing that whatever he is doing it is for a greater good. He may be part of a different group from the Ethan/Nathans from Canada and is actually fighting them.
Laurieg 11-17-2005, 08:45 AM I'm in my 40's and I use that phrase alot. On my son who is 26 and his friends. I think he just ment it in the fact they are from different generations.
1voice 11-17-2005, 09:17 AM I'm 15 and I know what the Peace Corps is.
Monkey 11-17-2005, 09:47 AM I think it's more miraculous that Goodwin looks that good for near 50! I want to go to that island! I'll take my chances with the others if I can look that good! LOL
conspiricytheory 11-17-2005, 10:03 AM Thought that was a strange comment when Goodwin said it.
He wanted the radio to take off with it so the tailies couldn't contact anyone and get rescued.
I don't think so. The Tailies *did* use the radio and it didn't help them any. For some
reason, Goodwin wanted to either: a) Use the radio himself to contact someone or
b) Run off with it. If they had let him go by himself do you think he'd have come back?
I think he would have, since he had plenty of chances to leave before then. So the
question is what he'd use the radio for. Who does he want to contact?
LuckyMe 11-17-2005, 03:50 PM Yeah, his comment seemed odd to me too. I'm in college and the Peace Corps comes to our Carreer fair every semester. Everyone here knows who they are. I thought it was very odd.
libs30 11-17-2005, 08:49 PM If he's been on the island for 20 years, as Ana Lucia suggested when she said the knife was that old, he might be surprised that the peace corps is still around.
Similar to when Desmond said to Locke 'so the world's still out there?'
Judging from their clothes and primitive ways, it doesn't seem like the others have had much contact with the rest of the world. So Goodwin might be surprised that his cover worked, since he was taking a risk saying he worked for the peace corps when he didn't know whether it was still running.
And maybe his comment about 'people your age' was simply to detract from his lie, and from the fact that if Ana didn't know the peace corps was still around, then for all Goodwin knew, maybe it wasn't, so he had to change the subject and turn it round on her.
ahurkonov 11-17-2005, 09:01 PM Maybe his comment has something to do with the press release on the Honso Foundation website, about the 105 year old oragutan. I mean, if Goodwin was fifty in the seventies, when the degroots started the expirements, and the others have life extension... that could explain it.
GettinLost 11-18-2005, 02:39 AM I think it was more a reference to the fact that the whole peace movement was much stronger back in the sixties and seventies, which I think is a clue as to the nature or rationale the Others are using to justify their actions.
I think it was a "tell" we missed about Goodwin being an Other. If he has been on the Island a while, he may have wondered if the "Peace Corp" was a good "line" or not!! He was probably pleasantly surprised to find that it still exists. After all, how would he know - being on the Island for as long as...?? That's what bothers me... Just how long have they been on this Island??
Ethan and Goodwin were dressed nicely - like normal passengers on a plane. Goodwin's shirt was a bit loose - could be mistaken for too big - and he had shoes! Ethan clothes looked fairly normal too. And they were both "clean cut". Hair cut short, shaved, etc.
The other "Others" looked like "raggamuffins". The guy on the boat looked like a pirate, the ones who walked through the forest looked pretty threadbear.
Maybe there are two groups of Others!! Scientists/Military and "whoever has washed up on the beach" - like Danielle!
