I don't think Goodwin was actually in the Peace Corps (TM) as he said, but I think it more refers to what his motivations are for what he and the other Others are doing on the island. They are idealists that have a distinct plan for how they think the earth can be saved.

om also puzzled about goodwins comment to ana about why the people were taken and he said something about them being "good people", as if implying the people left behind are "bad people"

If I am not mistaken, one of the things Hanso was "into" on the Orientation movie was Utopian society. Sure seemed to me that Goodwin was tooooooooo

I actually took Goodwin's comments as a way to place what generation he came from. Remember he was surprised that someone AL's age even knew what the Peace Corp was.

The thing that the statment made me think of is when Desmond was surprised that the world was still out there. Kind of the idea that maybe Goodwin had been on the island a very long time and was not entirely sure it was still out there. He threw out that statement as a jest and when she accepted it he kept that story line going.
