View Full Version : U.S. Army knife
Shatterhand 11-17-2005, 02:35 AM Why hasn't anyone mentioned the U.S. Army knife that one of the Others owned? It wasn't even on the Long Lost List thread. Did I just totally dream this up?
Seems like the Others (the stealthy ones that don't leave footprints) having some sort of tie with the US military is huge.
Thoughts?
zstrata 11-17-2005, 02:36 AM Definitely. Perhaps they came when here when the incident happen. It is in the pacific so of course it could be left over from the war.
Desmonds_blender 11-17-2005, 02:40 AM ummm, I havent searched for any threads on it either, but you most definitely didn't dream it up. It's something I noted immediately (as I'm sure most viewers did)--though I wouldn't necessarily assume that the US Military has something to do with the island. Perhaps the Others took it from one of their captives earlier on. Then again, didn't the woman who Hurley went to see in "Numbers" (can't remember the name, sorry), state that her husband heard the numbers while in the Navy? Maybe the military did get involved with exploring the island.....
Fire_Fly 11-17-2005, 02:42 AM it could be from goodwin. what was he in? the peace corps??
beagle1962 11-17-2005, 03:00 AM 20 years ago is about the time the degroots were staring there little experiment....hmmmm.....

Yep, perhaps the Degroot and the US Gov..had a *partnership* that went bad...
torb28 11-17-2005, 03:39 AM Maybe a Kate tie in, since her dad was in the army?

I think the Other who had the knife found it somewhere. I don't think they are associated
with the US military. What I would want to know is *where* she found it. I am thinking
there's probably a cache of old military surplus stuff somewhere - perhaps at the radio
tower. It's possible, though, that it belonged to someone else - maybe a member of
Danielle's team.
Veiny Eyeball 11-17-2005, 04:08 PM I think its very interesting.
Leaving aside the obvious ties to some government involvement, Philidelphia experiment, etc, etc . . . I imagine it could be an artefact from WW2 and a prior US presence on the island.
Alternatively, it would be interesting if some soliders had also been stranded on the island at some point in the past.
choumom 11-17-2005, 04:30 PM There were just so many little things in this episode, like the US Army knife, that I have been suprised no one mentioned yet. Glad this got started. I think the possibilites are endless. Perhaps Goodwin was really a part of the Peace Corp at some point in time. Would they have had access to US Military issue knives?
ortiz34 11-17-2005, 05:58 PM started this earlier, not much here though

Djscherr 11-22-2005, 04:29 PM But what if the knife was just a bit of military surplus that the founders of the island picked up on the cheap to outfit the island. Note the military weaponry with the AKs and the handguns and stuff.... why not a bunch of surplus army knives from the Vietnam War? I say the Vietnam War as I imagine any knife left from WWII would have corroded if left int he wild, while the Vietnam war would have been more recent and was a major military mobilization shortly before we believe the island was settled.
happypixie 11-22-2005, 05:01 PM Just a thought in the oriantaion film it says....
"Danish industrialist and munitions magnate Alvar Hanso whose financial backing made their dream of a multi-purpose social science research facility a reality."
The meaning of .....
munitions -1 archaic : RAMPART (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/rampart), DEFENSE (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/defense)
2 : ARMAMENT (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/armament), AMMUNITION (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/ammunition)
So if Hanso was involved in the start of the dharma project it would be possible before the dharma people arrived that some military people were there or even undercover to protect hanso's interest in the project and there for the knife could of gotten to the island that way.
to much haa
very-lost 11-23-2005, 08:53 AM What has not been mentioned is that the knife is stamped "US Army" Most government issued items are stamped only with "U S" so they can be used by any service Army, Marines, and Navy (left out Air Force because they were part of the Army up until late 50's early 60's).
Might be just an error on the part of the prop department, or a clue to the fact that it (and possibly other things) are counterfeit.
Had a friend go to Japan for some exchnage class with some school in Tokyo many years back. Said that the fad among teenagers was wearing t-shirts with american colleges. He bought one and brought it back because it made him laugh. It had "M.I.T. University" emblazed around a colleigate looking emblem/crest. A student at MIT, he wore it proudly around campus until it finally feel apart.
This may be a red herring or a clue. Not sure which one because they both smell fishy. :undecide:
