View Full Version : Plane/Monster sound
MPmom 11-17-2005, 02:55 AM I am surprised to see no thread about the sound of the plane being the exact sound of the "monster". I was amazed after the plane started sinking to hear that same screeching mechanical sound we have been pondering for the past year.
What are the implications of this? Why would the tree-busting monster make the same sound of a sinking tail section?
Is this one of four choices on the island sound effects control panel?
Crickets..birds...ocean surf...screeching mechanical sound
Is the monster a symbol of their inner fears, and the sound of the sinking plane is the sound of their most fearful memory? Maybe the monster and its sound are all in their minds. Wait...the group on the other side of the island didn't hear the tail section sink, and the tailies haven't heard the monster.
Any ideas?
penyours 11-17-2005, 03:17 AM I've always thought it was the monster that broke the plane in half and brought in down to the island/ocean
hellotzp 11-17-2005, 03:22 AM ha! well, i was wondering what the "noise" during the beach crash scene was, but it wasn't exactly the same as the "monster". similar, though - and very weird, and interesting. this was a good show, lotsa clues!
MPmom 11-18-2005, 02:48 AM Does anyone have a clip of the monster sound from last season to compare to the sinking tail section sound?
OnAonXM 11-18-2005, 03:09 AM I heard it too MPmom. To me it sounded exactly like one of the many sounds that the monster makes. So much so that even though I was watching the plane crash I was thinking that we were about to see the monster.
It was brought up shortly in another thread but died rather fast... but there are others who agree with you/us :)
miss emme 11-18-2005, 03:18 AM I just watched the opening scenes again and my first thought was the sounds were coming from the turbines of the middle section off screen. But then second thought was its just the sounds of the plane, the metal, as its sinking.
OnAonXM 11-18-2005, 03:38 AM ok cool, you have it on tape I guess?
Do me a favor and watch that scene again and compare it to this clip (http://media.putfile.com/Monster-from-HM) I just uploaded to putfile. Its audio of the scene where the monster appears in Boone vision-quest. I left Shannon screaming for reference. Tell me if you think it doesn't sound exactly the same after listening to both.
EllsBells1960 11-18-2005, 08:06 AM I thought last season that the sounds of the monster sounded like the plane breaking apart - from one of the early episodes. I can't remember now whose flashback it was - but it definitely sounded the same even then.
MissJenniPenni 11-18-2005, 09:45 AM Rose said the noise was familiar - even if she was passed out when the plane broke apart, her brain would still be aware of noise & perhaps this is stuck in her subconcious?
boo_boo_cat 11-18-2005, 10:01 AM It sounds like metal under stress & breaking apart.
It didn't sound anything like the roller coaster chain sound we hear later with Locke.
It seems to me that there is more than one monster sound.

Would it be freaky if we later find out Locke has a phobia of rollercoasters? Because I believe the monster noises are of the survivors fears somehow
DIonisis6 11-18-2005, 12:18 PM I too heard a similaity between the monster sound and the tail end sinking into the water. I just thought it was a lack of sound editing and they just used the same sounds LOL.
DOMinatrix 11-18-2005, 12:28 PM well, i dont know if its just me... but to me the monster sounds alot like the T-Rex from Jurassic Park
the plane sinking didnt really sound exactly like that... but some sounds were similar

Thanks for the clip OnAonXM! I think it is EXACTLY the same sound. Not the chain sound that dragged Locke, but the sound you hear when the monster is in the jungle pulling trees out and such. If I weren't looking right at the screen, I would have thought it was the monster in the opening scene.
Again, I wonder why the monster sounds like a piece of the plane sinking. I wonder if it could be similar to the theory some are discussing regarding the whispers being from the subconscious memories of the listener.
Maybe it will come up again when the tailies reach the Lostaways and the monster makes another visit.
Deadshot 11-18-2005, 07:55 PM I got to agree with this. When I first heard the noise I thought we were going to see the monster or catch a glimpse.Definitely a cool theory on the monster noise being their sub conscious fears.
OnAonXM 11-18-2005, 08:28 PM No problem MPmom.
Its been bugging me too. I've always read the other threads in the past about how the monster sounds like the crash but usually thought 'ok yea, they do sound similar' but this crash from The Other 48 Days is SO exact to my ears that it is really really bugging me. I just wish I could find a clip of the crash somewhere so I could put them back-to-back on one file... but I only have the episode on VHS :(
I'm buying into the idea, more and more, of the monster being part of the Lostaways subconscious, or at least it having the ability to mimic their fears. The monster has SO many different sounds, I'd swear in Exodus two of the sounds it makes are (1)a boar and also (2)a bear (probably a polar bear). While another it makes (as mentioned before on this forum) is of Lockes calculator from his job... not sure what to make of that one.
Let me know if you find either a video of the crash or even just the audio somewhere.
Well I have this clip I uploaded:
http://media.putfile.com/crash79
It's the initial crash, but I am not sure if you meant that initial "moan" or later on when the tail is sticking up. Let me know and I can make an audio clip of it.

no thats perfect! thanks!
OnAonXM 11-18-2005, 08:52 PM Ok, here are the 2 sounds (http://media.putfile.com/H-and-M-into-48Days-monster) back to back... the first is from Hearts & Minds and the second is from The Other 48 Days.
Thanks again sier!
Well holy sh...
nice catch! Those are indeed exactly the same.
OnAonXM 11-18-2005, 08:59 PM lol thanks... now what does it mean? :lol2:
Simplist 11-18-2005, 09:13 PM it means something unless it is just thematic, background LOST music, like when the show the rotating LOST logo at the beginning

Wow, thanks for that sier! I was initially talking about the sound that follows that one, when the tail is sinking. It is much louder, more detailed and more drawn out. But that sound at the end as it's still falling is the monster sound too. I hadn't even noticed that one!

Thank YOU OnAonXM for putting the two together. Amazing that you knew which monster sound from which previous episode to match up to the new sound!

You're welcome :)
I actually lucked out... it was only the second one I tried. The first I tried was from Exodus but it wasn't close enough for me.
Veiny Eyeball 11-19-2005, 03:03 PM One of the first "crazy" theories that hit me in the 1st season was that they will still onboard the plane and the monster sound was actually just the fuselage coming apart, interpolated with events on the island. I thought the island might be part of an experiment involving time and space, especially considering the frequent allusions to cognisance and perception by the "eye shots." Having those sounds match up is intriguing.
EleveN 11-19-2005, 03:28 PM Hhhmmmmm. I'm wondering if anyone else saw the security system (by my count 3 cloud-like clusters) entering the water prior to the plane crash?

Here is a thread about the monster/security system sounds being from various events on the Island. It is from June of this year so season two revelations were not taken into account, but I think it is still very relevant:

Amber 11-19-2005, 10:00 PM So the sound of the tail end crashing and the monster are the exact same sound.. what does that mean? Do you think there are other plane crashes? More losties? I know it's out there but the most logical thing I can think of is that everytime they hear the monster noise, a plane is crashing? Haha I just realized how dumb that sounds.. :P
joeywally 11-19-2005, 11:06 PM everytime they hear the monster noise, a plane is crashing?
That made me think of "Everytime someone says they don't believe in fairies, somewhere a fairy dies" :) So does that fit into the Peter Pan theories?

I think the most important thing to remember is that the monster doesn't have just one sound.
Lots of people (myself included) hear Lockes calculator when the monster makes an appearance in Exodus. If you listen to the clip (http://media.putfile.com/exodus-monster), you'll also hear (what I think is) a boar and even a bear among a bunch of other things... including the "Hurley bird".
One of the fields of research in the Orientation film is parapsychology.
I think maybe whatever the monster is is able to read their fears somehow and use them against them.
Lockes calculator has me scratching my head but the other sounds (plane crash/boar/polarbear/bird) all scared lostaways to varying degrees.
Maybe Lockes worst fear is going back to his old job... lol... I don't know.
But really, if you listen to the clip there are just SO many different sounds there... I can't think of any other explanation (as silly as it sounds)

Yeah, I can totally hear the sound of the boar at 1:42 of the clip. That's crazy!
Cobblepot 11-22-2005, 01:33 AM Wow, I can hear them too. This could potentially keep someone from sleeping for days. I dont have a inckling as to what the 'monster' is.
Buzku 11-22-2005, 05:36 PM That monster sound in The Other 48 Days sound to me like the monster... screams. When the plane hits water it maybe hits monster too? That made me think that maybe monster = island? We also know that trees are pulled into air from ground when monster sound is heared. It seems that if monster is not island it travels underground. Maybe part of it was in the sand in bottom of the water where tail-part of plane crashed.
Thoughts?
