Remember the book Sawyer was reading?
Watership Downs, one rabbit warren (that's the correct term right?) versus another.
The Survivors versus the Others.
They're underground, I'm positive.
forgot to mention, that hanger/bunker metal whatever pretty much confirmed it.

We know.
It just might take awhile for JJ to get to the point where that's revealed. My guess is this year's season finale.

Speaking of finale. Interesting they chose to do Hurley's backstory as the decorative cliffhanging. Has he ever been shown actually 'on' the plane? He was at the crash site. Perhaps the crash and the character have a connection?
Did Hurley cause the crash? ( "sir, please don't do jumping jacks near the tail section")
What warrior past will be revealed?
How did he develop an immunity to facial hair?
What strange being voluntarily admits to being involved with a backgamon tournament!?!

I don't remember if it was an internet "conversation" with J.J. or Jorge, but it was stated that Hurley was on the plane. If I can find it again, I'll post where it is.

I don't know what made me think of this but has anyone ever seen the movie "The Village?" The island that they are stuck on may be a research project on how humans would react in a situation such as this. The others maybe studying from the underground lab, Ethan may have came to get Claire because she was about to have the baby and the people doing the research don't want to have things go wrong with the baby, another potential experiment on being raised in that enviroment. Ethan didn't want Jack to follow him back to the lab. It's pretty far out there but maybe.

Yeah, jazzy J, that ones out there, too. The idea is it's either some sort of massive scientific lab complex/experiment or that it is an abandoned WWII era outpost to observe atomic testing (the French did this after WWII) that was subsequently settled by whatever weird group "the Others" are comprised of.
I think the only explanations that have been ruled out at this point are the spaceship (ala Dark City) and purgatory. I seem to recall both have been ruled out by the show's producers during various interviews. They want to make everything seem realistically possible and scientifically provable.
