While Shannon is busy motivating the moving party with her top down antics, Sayeed strolls by and valiantly breaks the ice with "we are closer to the equator here....yada yada....can I offer you a melanoma pamphlet" or some such.
Question: Your plane was a thousand miles off course, how exactly would you know whether or not you're closer to the equator than from where you left?
Does he have some curvature of the earth equation figured out or was the polar bear an instant clue that they must be near the earth's beltline?
Good point!! If there are polar bears on the island, even though it is tropical in nature, how can Sayid even begin to guess where they are??? They could be by freaking Iceland for all they know!
Melanoma pamphlet....... ha ha ha ha :lol2:

I don't think he was being literal, I think that was his idea of a smooth opening line. I would have just thrown a bug on Shannon's back, she'd jump up in a reflex action and presto! :o

He was just using that as an opening line. He wanted her help so he acts helpful.
Last time I checked Iceland is not between Autralia and USA or Fiji. ::)
I don't think they have polar bears in Iceland.

But Iceland is known and inhabited. Lostralia is unknown and anything but a normal place.
I didn't say they were IN Iceland, I said they could be near, and I wasn't being literal. They are thousands of miles off course according to the pilot, who may not even know whats really goin on, so ya, they could be anywhere, even near Iceland. ::)
They are on an island with so many strange things happening that they could be anywhere or nowhere. ;)
PEACE! ;D

I think it was a nice way to say , "Hey spoiled little hottie, you shouldn't be worried about getting a tan when there's plenty of other more important things that you should be concerned about". He couldn't be mean and then ask for her help, so he thought of another way to go about it. Although since he is a man, I'm sure the bug-throwing idea crossed his mind at some point.
As far as the equator thing: he knew where they came from and knew where they were going, so even if they were off-course it's a safe bet to say they're closer than where they were before.

wordy mc word to above, and also you can tell something of relative position to the equator by the sun's position overhead. For example, here in New England the sun isn't directly overhead this time of year, nor would it be in Australia in thier winter. But at or near the equator the sun performs a much more direct overhead arc.
