View Full Version : Why Sawyer?
lost_horizon 11-22-2005, 05:18 PM Seriously, what does Kate see in him? Sure he's handsome, but that's not why you marry a person! If Sawyer was bald, fat, had crooked teeth, squintly eyes, and just all around ugly, but had the same personality! Kate wouldn't give him a second look, even if he was EXACTLY the same inside. So really, what does she see in him?!
venicebeachbrat 11-22-2005, 05:24 PM We could say that about anyone and the partner they choose couldn't we?
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Either on the outside or inside.
Kate knows Sawyer's background as far as his family goes and I believe she feels for what he has gone through. Maybe she feels a connection for some reason......
LostMyMarbles 11-22-2005, 05:31 PM As Sawyer says, Kate is "the only other person on the island who just doesn't belong." Nobody else can understand them the way they can understand each other.
Besides, he has dimples.
Baileysdad 11-22-2005, 05:38 PM They are both destructive personalities...therefore...they will be most attracted to the WRONG person for them...it's the Costanza complex...make up your mind and then do the opposite because everything they've done to this point has led them to ruin...
Geez..I lost my own point there...
She sees the kind and warm person that he is beneath the surface... She sees that he is about to come out of his shell.
She sees loads of things in him that are good qualities... And I DO think that she would have looked at him twice if he hadn't had those looks too... Or at least I hope she would...

Speak for yourself - Evi chose the hobbit, didn't she? :lol2: Not that Charlie's ugly, but he's not wat I'd call "hot". Some people see beyond physical appearance. Hell, the last guy I liked looked like the fat guy from Laurel & Hardy - but I was really attracted to him.
The same goes for Sawyer, there are a lot of great looking guys on the island - Jack and Sayid to name a few. There's chemistry between Kate and Sawyer for the same reason Sawyer has a lot of fans - they see something there beyond the nice chest - a flawed human being, one we want to root for.
And I know it's been mentioned before, but I'll mention it again - when you watch the interplay between the triangle, Kate can be herself around Sawyer, she is his equal and doesn't have to put up an act or try to be something she's not. Evi said it herself, that's something you need in a relationship, and it's hard to find.
Don't worry yourself too much about not understanding it - I think it just depends on what you want out of a relationship. Some people want something messy and passionate and equal and wonderful, like Skate, and some people want someone to rescue them - the hero, the good guy. It's not something you can explain or quantify.

WELL SAID TROSS!! :clapping:
P.S. - the bit about the last guy you dated looking like the fat guy from Laurel & Hardy? Hysterical!!:roflmao:
TRoss 11-22-2005, 10:32 PM :lol2: Thanks.
And it's TRUE!! I found him SOOOO attractive - he had a great personality.
Hibbs 11-23-2005, 12:40 PM I always think the answer to this question is very simple. Kate is attracted to Sawyer because he flat-out gets her. The same holds true in reverse. They've shown their worst sides to each other, and neither is particularly repulsed, offended or even disturbed.

Nice first post, Hibbs  and welcome to the fuselage:jump:
I don't know , if I can trust you maybe you have more shrimp guys that need to be taken care of  JUST JOSHING
lisagwilkins 11-23-2005, 02:02 PM I think in all honesty she's attracted to him because of who he is...not so much about how he looks....but, of course, how he looks doesn't hurt either....but she feels they are the same sort and more that Jack has this lofty notion of honor. She doesn't have to pretend or try to live up to an expectation with Sawyer, he doesn't put on any airs about who he is and he knows who she is without her being able to cover it up....
and let's face it, the sexual tension between him, her and Jack is so thick you could spread it on a bagel.
The staff has years of good stuff that can be done with just that one angle. Remember how long it too to finally work it out for David and Maddie on Moonlighting....or am I the only one old enough to remember them.

QueenElessar 11-24-2005, 12:35 AM Great reasons everyone! Well said :)
First of all...Kate's not walking down the aisle with Sawyer just yet...LOL
But she likes him because as Anne of Green Gables would say (wierd reference I know)...she sees a kindred spirit in him. He's somebody she just feels connected to...for whatever reason. Maybe it's because they've suffered similar set-backs in life...maybe they think alike...or maybe they just understand eachother inherently. If she just liked him for his looks...she'd have jumped his bones already ;)

Queene (I'm ganna start calling you that hope you don't mind!) I so LOVE that you just quoted Anne... I will be marathoning it this weekend with my mom... you are so my Fuselage BFF!!! HA... but you are so right, they are just this shows "that couple," and its not so much about romance, you just know they are meant to be, like the sum of something, like two parts of a whole...
case in point I was in a band in college two of the guys just got engaged to their sweeties... one of them, ya know he's just always been about "the plan" and marriage is one of the steps... but the other guy and his gal, they are it, like I don't see "it" very much anymore in reality (beyond the silver or small screen) but everytime I see them I'm like, so thats what its like and it DOES happen in real life, there really are Kate and Sawyers, Syd and Vaughns, Logan and Veronicas, Scully and Mulders, Noah and Allies, Anne and Gilberts, Eliza and Mr.Darcys, Rhett and Scarlets... it's like "magic"... Sleepless in Seatle, sigh...
PS- wouldn't it rock if they did have a skate wedding, seems like I heard one of the guys talk about the first "island wedding" on a pod-cast, or maybe it was in my sweet dreams! That would be pretty sweet, oh my gosh, the mind reels at the possibilitites!!!
QueenElessar 11-24-2005, 01:01 AM Queene (I'm ganna start calling you that hope you don't mind!) I so LOVE that you just quoted Anne... Go right ahead!..call me whatever you want...LOL
And SHUT UP!!! I just marathoned the Anne mini-series and it's sequel last weekend!!! NO JOKE!! LOL
agentalana 11-24-2005, 01:04 AM okay serious question... what do you think about the 3rd Anne movie? Like, I like the sense of closure it brings, but if feels so different than th eothers, is it just me!?! I mean I so love their reunion, but I don't know it's like a Saved By The Bell or Growing Pains reunion movie... ya know? or is it just me?
QueenElessar 11-24-2005, 01:20 AM LOL...well not to get TOO off topic...but the 3rd Anne movie was totally pointless. I watched it and everything of course...but I don't associate it with the brilliance of the originals...It was just SO after the fact...and totally out of place!
agentalana 11-24-2005, 01:48 AM okay good to know I am not alone there... that I am not Lost.... and back on topic....
TRoss 11-24-2005, 07:03 AM LOL!
I like these other strange references you're bringing in.
I was talking with my niece today about Beauty and the Beast, and THAT kind of reminded me of Kate and Sawyer. The Beast is gruff, like Sawyer, and though the Beast isn't handsome like Sawyer, you can equate that to Sawyer's original attitude - the way he talked to people, the things he said - he acted very 'ugly'. But along comes someone who accepts him for what he is, warts and all, and it sets him free.

Aww T - that's a great comparison!
agentalana 11-24-2005, 10:58 AM but the Beast sure is hot when he transforms... mmm... whenever I take the Disney Princess Quiz (back off, its fun) I always turn out to be Belle... dang it where's my Beast/Saywer!?!?!.... Sawyer, and I'm back on track, sorry I like to chase rabbits (AH... Watership Down... brilliant!)
elfdream 11-24-2005, 11:56 AM I think the attraction on Sawyer's part started way back in the Pilot when Kate took the gun from Sawyer after the Polar Bear incident. His 'girls' like you comment. I think he saw through her 'act' of not knowing how to deal with guns right away and just 'knew' that they had things in common. Not very nice things but things the others on the island wouldn't understand.
Now where it was with Kate towards Sawyer I don't know. I don't follow that 'ship' all that closely so I can't really think of a defining moment. She was always bad mouthing him and putting him down until suddenly in Confidence Man' 'he says we have a connection' . I didn't see it coming on her part..so perhaps someone else saw something that was pretty obvious to everyone else but I missed.
And as for Evi and Dom...I don't know how many posts I have waded through on fansites of girls who are sooo jealous of Evi. ;) It does have to do with more than just looks...I watched him on a talk show and thought.."If I were 25 and single and he asked me out..I would go!" and it had nothing to do with him being rich and famous. He just looked like a fun guy to be with.
lisagwilkins 11-27-2005, 06:07 PM Of course then again, Evi had to choose Dom, Josh is married!!!!
hahahaha
just had to throw that in!!!
elfdream 11-27-2005, 07:36 PM
But Josh is afraid of bugs...
Apparently Evi and Dom can't get enough of them!
dietcoke 11-27-2005, 08:57 PM And as for Evi and Dom...I don't know how many posts I have waded through on fansites of girls who are sooo jealous of Evi. .
I don't see it. I don't find Dom attractive at all. I can see why girls find Mathew Fox, Naveen Andrews, Daniel Dae Kimand Josh Holloway (my fave) hot. But Dom? - I can't see it.
QueenElessar 11-27-2005, 09:18 PM I'll cop to not being the biggest CHARLIE fan...
But it's not hard to see how anyone could fall for Dom. He's cute, he's funny...and incredibly quirky. I just love watching him in interviews on in behind the scenes stuff...pluss his commentary on the Lost DVD, and on the LOTR DVD's is hysterical.
He's not 'typically' HOT...but he's quite cute, and his personality seems incredibly attractive. He's kind of like a 'seth cohen'...an adorable dork  . There's this one Jay Leno interview where he's talking about Star Wars...and going on about how he hates that George Lucas changed this scene where Han Solo doesn't shoot first, and how he feels so strongly about that becuase it undermines Han Solo's bada**ness. Being a dork myself...it's kinda irrestiable ;)
elfdream 11-27-2005, 09:26 PM And its possible to be a fan of someone you don't find 'hot'. I don't think Teryy O'Quinn or Jorge are all that 'hot' but I'm still fans. I was was watching Dom on Brit TV BEFORE Lord of the Rings and liked him...because I just...liked him.
But this thread is about Sawyer and Kate.
dietcoke 11-27-2005, 11:44 PM You guys are right. It's just hard for me because I don't like the Charlie character at all. I loved LOTR, but not because of the hobbits. Dom hasn't played a character that I have been fond of yet. Based on comments, I do believe that he has a great personality in real life.
And to be perfectly honest, I didn't think Josh Holloway was that hot when I first started watching Lost. It took a while for him to grow on me. Now that I love the Sawyer character (and I love, love, love the Sawyer/kate/Jack dynamic), I think Sawyer (and thus Josh) is extremely attractive.
banshee 11-28-2005, 02:57 AM Don't worry yourself too much about not understanding it - I think it just depends on what you want out of a relationship. Just speaking from a Jate perspective, the I save you/you're my hero dynamic is what Jack/Sarah's relationship was based on vs. JK. Sarah didn't see Jack as a man, she only viewed him as a hero. Kate sees all his best/flaw..She isn't a damsel in distress, but imo Jack is helping her to acknowledge her personal empowerment by inspiring her vs."rescuing" her per se.
Jack can't give himself permission anymore to be black/white, & Kate can't give herself permission to be grey all the time if they are to grow as individuals..That's where I see them balancing each other out & helping one another to reach their full potential...It hasn't been easy, it's been angst ridden & wonderful & required compromise, but that's what love is about imo.
I can see why Kate gravitates to Sawyer. They've had similar life experiences & know what it's like to have to live by self-preservation as a code. I think she's helped him to tap into his vulnerability, & he's a familiar comfort for her insecurities. Where I differ is in believing he understands her heart vs. her mind, & that sameness is a prerequisite for love. It's more just what someone needs to feel fulfilled & whole which of course varies from person to person/opinion.
bobbinghead1 11-28-2005, 06:41 PM Assuming Jack and Kate gets together, Kate learns all the good values about life from Jack. She now has a heart of gold and is as good as the girl from next door.
What next, a character needs to continue to grow.
Now Kate is all good and complete opposite of Sawyer, she must go back and teach Sawyer the good values in life. And the 3 will live happily ever after:confused: .
Jack will never be able to understand Kate simply because Kate's been in situations where Jack has never experienced/will never experience in his life. They belonged to 2 different classes/worlds in the society. And what is a relationship without understanding? Kate needs to grow but on her own accord, if she needs professional help, she can go to either Jack or Libby. Jack cannot love Kate because he wants to help her, I think this was what happened with him and his wife, it pretty much became a liabilty soon enough. On the other hand, Sawyer and Kate have much similar background and they will be able to understand each other and grow with each other. This kind of experience is priceless and more realistic.
