Just wondering if it is significant that the flight left from Australia?

Geographically speaking, I understand it may be important in terms of the location of the Island (if it is in fact real-life location, as per Sydney, LA, etc). Notwithstanding this, could it have been from anywhere else, or was Sydney chosen for an specific reason?
