Eko further revealed his resolve in this eppi. He seems to operate out of a sense of faith, community, or greater good. Then again, the strang statement he made about taking Sawyer back to the fusie camp "not for him, but for me" was totally confusing. Does he need repentence for his killing of the others?
His interaction with Locke, Jack, was awesome. Sticks to his instincts, will not take anyone back to AL with guns. He calls ALs shooting of Shannon a mistake, understanding AL's side as well as the fusies.
Eko's becomming the most intriguing character of the 2nd season.

Definately, from "The Other 49 Days" I could tell right away he was my favorite character. Well...along with Vincent, Hurley, Charlie, Sayid, Sawyer, Claire, and Jin, in that order.

I think his conscience spoke to him and his faith led him to not care what AL said (even though she's not his boss) and he got up picked him up and brought him to Jack.
I know that this may be way off, but I don't know if any of you heard of the prayer "Footprints" It talks about God being with you. I think that Eko represented a sort of savior for Sawyer - "It was then that I carried you". If any of you know the religious poem, you will understand what I mean.

Thank the heavens for Eko  He seems to actually think and not :ranting: blow up .I hope he will be a calming influence on the rest of the Lostaways

That moment when Eko and Locke first make eye contact gave me total shivers!!! I'm saying it right now, there's going to be some serious conflict between them! Probably regarding the whole button-pushing thing. I don't see Eko being willing to put his faith into something so arbitrary. His faith in his religion is much deeper than Locke's faith in the island. ANd that crossword puzzle clue - brilliant foreshadowing of the 2 of them soon meeting! Man, I love this show!
Not for him, but for me..
I think he is worried about his eternal soul, and when he helps Sawyer he is doing the right thing in the eyes of God.

I think you are right on target with that concept. His backstory must be unique.
Just as Jack is Locke's antithesis so is Eko to Ana-Lucia.
Cleary, he is a principled person. His killing of the two Others while defending himself 'crippled' those principles. He knows it is in his power to save a life so he does. If he did just step aside and cowl to Ana-Lucia then he would be compromising those principles once again. He may not could have prevented killing the two Others but he certainly can help save Sawyer's life so he does. Sawyer's character is irrelevant to Eko becasue whatever his principles are founded on are more important to him than the failings of someone else.
