Were Boone and Locke really looking for Claire or were they going back to investigate the metal object that had been found earlier?

I think their real motivation was the metal object that they found. Maybe they thought it would eventually lead them to Claire, but for the immediate time, I think weird metal object in the ground is enough to hold their attention. I think proof of this is that, if they were really looking for Claire, would they have kept the metal object such a secret?

And how deep are they going to have to dig to figure out what it is? An axe??

why would they need an axe to find claire?!

yeah, i suspect they are trying to break into the metal thing which is perhaps part of an underground tunnel system.. leading to different areas of the island.. and potentially secret bases under the island which the french people used to get around without being attacked?

I agree with yo u guys...why the axe, they should have had a shovel, to dig around the metal compartment. I dunno...why locke told boone to get the axe, unless he was expecting to fight w/ it once they open the metal (door,hatch, whatever it is)

The Boone/Locke stuff seemed strange to me--what exactly have they been doing for the past four days? I'm not great at remembering specific details, did anyone get a good look at the metal object during that scene? Had they accomplished much excavation there? It didn't seem to me like they'd accomplished much, but I guess we'll find out more next ex (I'm so darned impatient!)

I was under the impression that the axe is a fire axe? I know it looks big, but that's always what I thought it was. Don't/Didn't they put them next to fire extingushers?

Plus, aren't cockpits locked now? Would the other staff need an ax on board (away from passengers) in case they needed to get in there?

I think a more relevant question now has to be "who WASN'T armed on the plane?" I'll bet you dollars to donuts that someone on the plane was carrying a grenade or two.

Good thing they checked the passengers for box cutters and fingernail clippers, otherwise who KNOWS what sort of mischief they would be getting into...
