Keeping the left arm straight is fundamental for right handed players (or in this case someone who is left handed but playing with a right handed club). So that was sound advice.
Now if she was playing left handed with a proper club and hit the same shot it would have been a hook since a slice goes to the direction of the player's dominant hand.

Nope, she sliced it. Keeping the left arm straight is a problem for many golfers. They bend it too soon. I would say that's what Jack meant.

The golf playing on the island is a great thing. I am glad that they play some sort of game and it is funny.

When we see Kate hit the ball, the shot fades to the right. I'm fairly certain that's the shot Jack was refering to. It's definitely the one I'm refering to.
But please, let's not argue a trivial point. Kate looks like a natural. With a little practice she could probably beat the pants off Jack. And let's not read too much into my phraseology either.

I liked that because it reminded me of a point in season one where Sawyer said, "A doctor playing golf? What's next, a cop eating a doughnut?"

They actually did have golf balls in season 1 (Solitary). Must have been in the golf bag that gave Hurley the idea in the first place.

yeah very unlikely that someone would travel with their golf clubs and no golf balls. Also, on first post i was just saying that i thought it was funny that Jack was saying "keep your left arm straight" when you watch his far from perfect swing. Kate's looks pretty good.

I am really glad I didnt see one person bashing golf in this thread..haha. It sounds silly, but its a pretty common practice because it's considered an "upper crust" sport.

The only time we saw rocks being hit were by Jin, during his flashback episode. Obviously you want to hold onto what golf balls you, so if you want to do the "driving range" thing, you gotta use rocks.
And I don't think Kate's slice is a left arm issue... slicing can be attributed to breaking your wrists too late. Jeez, JACK! a hook? keep left arm straight? Docs play golf, but they're OBVIOUSLY not good golf linguists/teachers. LOL! While I can understand using rocks instead of balls to preserve the balls they have, wouldnt bashing rocks around with the clubs do quite a lot of damage to them? I mean, its great to save the balls but once the clubs are dented and bent from hitting rocks, what are you gunna do with them?

If you are right handed and hit a hook..it is like pulling a baseball..the ball veers hard to the left. A slice is when it veers hard to the right...going further sideways than forward. Not fun.

Maybe the writers messed up the terminology on purpose to show that Jack isn't a great golfer. Kate's shot at the first hole was certainly more accurate than Jack's. Speaking of, when he hit it into the trees, would that have been a hook? Did HE need to keep his arm straight?
