I dunno if it's been brought up but.....Is it possible they are on a prison Island? Sort of like the movie Escape from LA? That would explain why so many criminals are on the island. Sayer, Kate, Sayid, Ana-Lucia, Jin, and Charlie. We don't know much about EKo's past, we also don't know if Jack ever did something wrong. This could also explain why they take the children and say they are "good" I dunno, I didn't really think it trough all the way just felt like getting it out there,

It's on shaky ground...it would make more sense if every single survivor was a criminal.

Everyone there has a past that is for sure. They seem to be all prisoners of their own minds right now.

It could be a hint that they were coming from Australia. Wasn't Australia a Island prison before? Some higher power brought they all together on this plane.

I dunno. Doesn't seem to tie in with Desmond or DHARMA.

We don't know the truth behind desmond yet. He could have been a guard sort of speak

Speaking of prisons, maybe the others were experiments gone wrong, and
these people were imprisoned there on the Island, but escaped. They
would have their own leader. Kind of reminds me of Serenity (the movie).

I've sort of toyed around with the theory that the island is a prison (this is also similar to the storyline of Cube Zero - the prequel to Cube) to these people, especially after Sun had asked Shannon or Claire (I can't remember) if they thought they were being punished for all the bad things they had done before. It seems like everyone on the island has a pretty awful past as far as the things they've done to other people. However, some of them haven't seem to have done anything too horrible, but of course we haven't seen everyone's backstory. I really doubt it is a prison, but anything is possible.

Sun was talking to Shannon and Claire told them they were crazy. Yes..Austrailia was used as a prison colony by Great Britain..the worst of the worst were sent there...ghosts of prisoners past?

They're not ghosts. The producers have said as much.
I'd be really mad if this turns out to be a prison island. lol

I don't think they are all criminals in the technical sense of being 'wanted' like Kate was. For instance, I don't think Jin has a criminal record although he participated in some shady activities. But to me, what seems to be consistent is a sense of guilt that they all share about various things in their past. So maybe it's more of an 'emotional prison' rather than a literal one.

I like what you've said belshep. I don't think they're all criminals in the sense that they've done something to break the law. I realize that what I'm about to say may have been said by writers or posted elsewhere but I think part of why they are there is redemption/closure. I say that because some of the characters might think they have something to redeem themselves for but not really...like Hurley might feel bad about his mother (is that right?) who was injured because of the numbers or Michael who wrote to Walt who didn't get the letters. Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of these or if you have more details to fill in It seems to fit some of the characters:

Kate-Criminal, she was in that bank robbery
Jack- Maybe something about the woman he was married to? I don't know for sure.
Sawyer-Because he was a con man
Charlie-Drug use
Claire- I really don't know, maybe something about closure because of Aaron and his father?
Shannon-Because of the way she seduced Boone. This is one I'd like others to fill in. Maybe for Boone it would be because he didn't try to get his mother to give Shannon the money?
Sayid-Because of all of the people he tortured, also maybe something to do with Nadia
Michael-A lack of invovlement in Walt's childhood. This could also count as closure because of Susan's death maybe.
Walt-Closure because of his mother's death, although I have a feeling there is more to his story.
Jin- Maybe something about his job he got from Sun's father?
Sun- Perhaps closure because she had been keeping secrets from Jin so maybe redemption as well.
Hurley- Redemption and closure, because I think he does feel bad about what happened because of the numbers, and maybe it's not all his fault, so he feels he needs to redeem himself but maybe doesn't thus he needs closure.
Locke-Maybe closure about his parents?
Ana Lucia-Redemption for killing Jason and now Shannon, also seeking closure about her guilt and lost child. We also don't know who the father of the child is.

Anyways, those are the ones I had ideas for. Please offer feedback or fill in the holes in this or offer your opinions.

That's a nice way to put it, belshep. An "emotional prison". I'm going with that idea.
