View Full Version : So, what else can we get the writers to say?
Peach 11-30-2005, 11:33 PM "So, Rose's husband was white. Didn't see that coming."
Come on...that line was TOTALLY aimed at us on these boards. So I'm wondering...can we convince the show's writers to make another direct gag about us?
JJ? Damon? Are you guys listening...?
timdorr 11-30-2005, 11:40 PM I still think the "I think we're going to have to watch that again" from Locke in Orientation was definitely aimed at us board folk. Even more so than that line. Plus, it was funnier :-P
frayadjacent 11-30-2005, 11:43 PM Both lines mentioned above made me chuckle to myself. It's nice to know they're listening to the fans!
rvarzea 11-30-2005, 11:45 PM LOVED IT!!! :) It was perfect.
Dagirlindajeans 11-30-2005, 11:48 PM sometimes the wit of these writers just really cracks me up.

Um, sorry to burst your bubble, but I don't think that line had anything to do with anyone on these message boards. Unfortunately, most people in this country still have stereotypes about race relations, and I would wager that most people, conciously or unconciously, presumed that Bernard was black. It seems logical that the castaways would think so as well. I'd be cautious about overestimating the importance of posting on this board...
Baileysdad 11-30-2005, 11:55 PM How could you miss Ana saying: "Are you here to convince me that not everyone hates me?"
GOLD BABY!!
roy815 11-30-2005, 11:58 PM I was waiting for Kate: "I wonder where it came from"
Sawyer: "Big *** horse village. How the heck would I know?"
They need to have some random extra step up onto a piece of lumber and start spouting off his weird theories. Hurley and Charlie see him, Hurley:"Aww, dude is starting his crazy theories again." Charlie: "I don't know mate, I think he's spot on sometimes." Hurley points to another piece of wood on the beach. Hurley: " Dude, he was on that other board yesterday, everything he said was totally contradicting."

I agree. I don't think it was aimed at us. I think it was just another Hurley saying what we were all thinking thing. Either way, I'm saying it was the best part of this episode for me.
ChicaFrom3 12-01-2005, 01:09 AM I am loving the various meta comments dropped into the scripts. But then, I've always been fond of a good well-handled meta laugh.
Peacock Spring 12-01-2005, 01:17 AM I thought this episode was filmed before the date in which we first saw Bernard. If that's true, then that wouldn't have given the writers time to come here and read our comments, write it into the show, and then have it be filmed in time to make jokes about what we said.
I reserve the right to be wrong.

That's what I thought too. Weren't these episodes filmed quite a bit of time ago?
Living_for_the_weekend 12-01-2005, 02:09 AM LOL. I was waiting for the writers to say what happened between Walt and Michael the way I called it. " The computer will tell Michael something about Walt/ Walt will use AIM instant messanger to say something to Michael
"
If Shan was still around, she would have said it. LOL
monsieurxander 12-01-2005, 04:24 AM How could you miss Ana saying: "Are you here to convince me that not everyone hates me?"
GOLD BABY!!
Actually, I believe she said "Are you here to convince me that everyone on this island doesn't hate me?"
(Someone out there correct me if I'm wrong...)

ok,i will!
she says:are you gonna try to convince me that everyone here doesn't hate me?
John_Locke 12-01-2005, 05:44 AM From the moment Rose mentions Bernard to Jack at the beach....i knew he was white.
How could i tell ? Just by watching Rose. If her husband was a black guy the chemistry in that scene would have been completely different. Also a black woman in her 50's confiding in a young white doctor...? even if Jack's a doctor, at least to my perception, it takes alot for a black woman to share any personal information, and surely not to someone younger...and white...so i guess her and bernard being an interracial couple has made her comfortable with this. I also considered that it all could just be Rose (her personality)... Either way...they are adorable together...
So i guess it's been obvious for me since day one.
I just Love the comments they are able to insert into the script that originates from the boards... I watch every episode for a to any post, user or comment i've heard of or read, hoping to see it on show.
The one with Locke and Jack and they mentions "The Fuselage" being the most obvious "plant" i found...but i know there are more...
MaggieRyanJr 12-01-2005, 07:21 AM The Fuselage was a huge part of their lives until it was sucked into the sea- I would hope they would discuss it! Also- I think your analysis of Rose is way off base. I don't see any way you could have come to a conclusion about her marriage from that conversation, and if you did, it could have been anything (Bernard is 25, Bernard is a young, white doctor, Bernard is a small Asian man, Bernard is the principal from Growing Pains...)
waltisfuture 12-01-2005, 08:06 AM Shout out
You need a haircut.
conspiricytheory 12-01-2005, 09:02 AM If you figured out from Roses conversation that her husband was white, your better then I. Nothing in her converation gave hint to that.

I agree but the "stereotype" that people marry within their race is grounded in fact.
From the Wall Street Journal -May 9, 1991 (referencing the 1990 US Census)
"interracial couples represented only about 2% of married couples in 1990"
Basically, the writers just wanted to give Hurley a funny line. Throw in a Hurley quip and a Kate and Jack kiss and you'll satisfy many of the forum members.
pacejunkie 12-01-2005, 09:17 AM I don't think Hurley's comment was a nod to this board, but I do think it was a nod to the viewing audience in general. I love that about this show. They are often having the characters say just what the viewers are thinking and it lets you know that they are thinking the same thing and that they are aware when things don't make sense. Knowing the surprise of many viewers, it was great to hear Hurley say, Rose's husband is white. Didn't see that coming. By the way, Hurley said the same thing the first time Sun spoke english in In Translation ("didn't see that coming").
Other great moments like these? When Kate and Sayid have the conversation over surviving the plane crash and how unlikely that was, and Charlie asking Locke about Desmond pushing the button every 108 minutes and saying, "How's that possible, didn't he sleep?" when you know the audience was thinking the same thing.
Lost is the best show ever. 6 week break??? I think I'm starting to hyperventilate...
Honbun26 12-01-2005, 10:47 AM Although the epi was probably filmed before we actually met Bernard, that doesn't preclude Hurley's funny line from being directed towards the boards. That scene was stand alone scene, meaning that it really wasn't associated with much of the action going on. They could have filmed and inserted that scene quite recently. I don't remember the entire conversation, but the gist was that Hurley wonders why Jack is chopping wood and maybe Jack is mad because that's usually Sawyer's job. There wasn't any conversation that was carried over from any other scene.
Just my 2 cents + inflation
mbsieve 12-01-2005, 10:49 AM comedians often have a bet in the green room. bets like "in your act tonite you have to use the word 'oshkosh" or you owe me 20 bucks and comedians struggle to get the inside joke into their act.
so....there you go jj. squeeze in the word oshkosh. that'll be good enough for me.....
mbsieve 12-01-2005, 10:52 AM or you owe me 20 bucks
jackMEsawyer 12-01-2005, 02:42 PM I just thought of it as one of Hurley's dry comments. It was hilarious and I totally missed him! I was glad we got another "hurley line" .
And then of course Jack....."Hurley is there something you need?"
Funny Funny for sure!

That is the funniest thing i have heard in a long time. Cheers to you.
Msgrv32 12-01-2005, 02:54 PM After all the bad things we've had to witness in the previous couple of episodes it's nice for things to be a little lighter.

Wow.
I'm seriously not trying to be snide here, but....have you ever known any black people? I just can't believe that anyone would think that no black woman ever opens up and talks to white people unless they're married to one.
Aside from the obvious fact that they're all supposedly rational adults and have learned a thing or two about life and people, they were in a horrific plane crash. Even if she was the stereotype that you seem to be portraying her to be, some things are just bigger than race.
geophurry 12-01-2005, 06:44 PM As for the timing with Bernard and the episodes being filmed, yeah, we wouldn't have seen Bernard yet when this episode was shot, but the "Didn't see that coming" line could easily have been in response to the many, many threads where folks scoured other character's flashbacks looking for any 50ish black guy they could find (the PI Locke hires? That guy behind Jack in that one Hospital seen?) No one even considered looking for a white guy. And the "Watch that again," maybe it wasn't aimed at us specifically, but there has been much talk in the media about how LOST is a show that absolutely requires you to own a Tivo, I think it was definitely a reference to that.
flora 12-01-2005, 08:17 PM I don't necessarily think that the writers are watching the board. First of all, they're not really supposed to in case they actually 'steal' a theory from a fan's blatherings. But they are interviewed and read the articles and see the entertainment news, ect., so they know what the viewing public in general (not just on the boards) are thinking. Though, at the same time, JJ did start this board intentionally and I can't believe that part of the purpose wasn't to eavesdrop on how the fans are reacting.
Anyhoo...next "Fan inspired line" I wanna hear is, "Spank me like the bad girl that I am!" I don't care who says it. I just want to hear it. Too bad Boone is gone already. (KIDDING! KIDDING!)

That has got to be the worst explanation for an opinion that I've ever heard. Rose confides in Jack so her husband is white? What the hell? If you really think like this, you are more than likely a racist yourself.
More realistically, I'm guessing you're just completely full of sh!t. I bet even the writers didn't know at that point that Bernard was white.
pacejunkie 12-01-2005, 09:30 PM I'd like to hear a character say, "I blame Damon". That'd be great.
hnation2342 12-01-2005, 09:44 PM Another thing I thought was amusing was the whole "Nathan - Ethan" reference in "The Other 48 Days". during the summer I read so many theories that Ethan would return, or he had a brother named Nathan, I thought it was totally funny that they played that up on the show
dragongrrl 12-01-2005, 10:18 PM I think it was just another Hurley saying what we were all thinking thing.
*claps* oh, very well said! in so many ways, Hurley's role in the dynamic of the characters is to be "everyman" and to be the voice of the audience. part of the reason he's so loveable is that he says what we're thinking.
nonnyd 12-02-2005, 12:19 AM Some of you from the JuST group know, I've been waiting and waiting to hear Sawyer react to the hatch imperitive: "You've been pressing buttons like a bunch of damn monkeys because of a filmstrip by psycho post docs?" Michael gave a weak version of it this week, but Damon, please let us hear Sawyer's take on the situation!
LostFANatic91 12-02-2005, 12:22 AM I just love how Locke says to Mr. Eko...
Locke: Hello again
Mr. Eko: Hello.
That always cracks me up they way they say hi to each other!
pacejunkie 12-02-2005, 08:52 AM Just watched Exodus again last night (it's gonna be a long break) and I was reminded of good old Arzt. He was a great character for representing the everyman, the anonymous survivor extra. When he complained to Hurley about not being part of the cool crowd, why does Kate get the best parts of wreckage, why doesn't Jin catch fish for everyone, where does Hurley hide the carbs and on and on. Hysterical!

I used to work as a roving reporter for a local newspaper. I managed to get lost on my way to do an interview one day and stopped to ask an elderly black lady the way. She paused and said it's over there, that white building - while pointing at a red brick building in the distance. I looked at her and she sighed and said, sorry, I didn't mean it that way. People are just so stuck on race nowadays that it's become the first thing I think about.
Kinda reverse of what King fought and died for, isn't it?
Aaronia 12-03-2005, 08:12 PM For me it was the dialog between Locke and Eko that sounded just like the boards:
Locke: "I mean, think about it. Somebody made this film. Someone else cut this piece out. We crash -- 2 halves of the same plane fall in different parts of the island -- you're over there, I'm over here. And now, here's the missing piece right back where it belongs. What are the odds?”
I’ve read hundred of times people complaining because the characters don’t ask questions about the weird things that happen on the island. I would say that the writers are listening to us, just sometimes.

Yes, it is the reverse. When people are overconditioned to be paranoid about it in relation to every single detail of life, it completely immobilizes us. We can't move ahead as a society, and it isn't for the good of anyone, it's all for the sake of political power. That is truly sad.
