Why would someone decide to cut out that particular piece of the film? Any thoughts?

They obviously don't want people to view it. But if they don't want anyone to see it, then why not just completely destroy the film, bury it, or do something. Why keep it in a book on the other side of the island?

it's all a way of messing with their minds!

Well... maybe someone wanted them to realize that the computer could be used for communication and wanted them to instigate another incident?

Maybe it has something to do with the Others? Or the moster?

I think because whoever took it out was the one that would try to talk them and didn't want them to NOT talk back.

Without the warning they would chat back and think nothing of it, when the reality is that they are not supposed to.

Obviously they don't want anyone to communicate with the outside world. But why? Dharma didn't do it. Or they would have left that part out of the film completely.

What about the other splices?!

Right before the edit, Marvin said not to use the computer for anything except entering the code. The part that was cut out was specifically saying to not try to communicate with the outside world.

Maybe someone didn't want them to know there was an option to communicate with anyone outside.
Being on a deserted island, trapped in a hatch underground, in solitary confinement...If the number puncher, whoever that might be, knew there was an OPTION to communicate, I think they would break down and try eventually. Even if they knew it would put them in danger, they might try anyway, and risk the consequences, especially if it were someone who was on the island against their will like our lostaways. Communication would put the Hanso Foundation and all their wacky experiments in danger of being discovered.

It would be like telling a child to stay out of the closed room with the bowl of candy on the table, because it's dangerous in there. What kid wouldn't sneak in anyway and grab some candy? It would be better to tell them to stay out of the closed room because it's dangerous in there.

It is a very interesting development- I wonder if there's a splice in each of the stations on the island?

yes, but why, when locke was showing michael about the computer and tried to type something before the 4-minute-mark was he unable to type anything, and then, after they saw the edited part of the film, michael was able to communicate with, well, whoever? makes me think it's another walt-thing. like reading about polar bears and there they are, or wanting to stop the rain so michael will look for vincent and it does. they find out it's possible to communicate using the computer, and all of a sudden, they can.

If I was Locke I'd search every nook and cranny of the Swan station just in case another piece was hidden away somewhere.

I think the part that was taken out of the original film is still missing. Candle doesn't look the same when you put the two pieces back together. Go to the Season 2 What Kate Did thread titled Dr. Candle's Hair.

I alluded to this in the "Eko got the story wrong" thread, but I think that the film was smuggled out of somewhere using the Bible.

I was wondering the same thing. Its possible that the communication started at the other device enabled the keyboard.

I was thinking the same thing. I wouldn't be suprise because Locke assumed in the first place it was just a frame or two, but look how much was left out in this one little part. I wouldn't be suprised if there are more splices at all.

i had been thinking that 2 i was trying to count how many splices there were to see if it matched up with hatch numbers 5 or 6
