Why was the filmstrip geared toward the Swan Bunker...in another bunker that had nothing to do with the Swan Bunker? It would have no purpose...

Thoughts..

I'm guessing someone, before Desmond decided to make sure that future replacements, or Desmond would never try to get out of their job. So they hid the rest of the orientation video somewhere else, on the other side of the island.

A story just waiting to be told... the joining of the groups, the joining of the strip- coincidence or fate?

Someone sabotaging the project... just like Danielle supposedly sabotaging the numbers transmission by changing it into a distress call, perhaps?

Good question--was wondering this myself. Maybe the sabatoge idea especially since it was hidden in the other hatch.

someone in another thread said that the missing film represented the temptation of using the computer for something else and that by removing the temptation it was protecting the inhabitants of the hatch, in a sense.

see my next post down for Vertical's analysis:

Vertical posted this earlier:

Someone clearly has been in both hatches. They took the splice from the original film and moved it all the way across the island.

That said, in my opinion, the missing 'splice' represents temptation. The fact that it said, repeatedly "Whatever you do, DON'T USE THE COMPUTER TO TRY TO CONTACT ANYONE ELSE" just screams "Hey, I want to try that". Classic psychology... the more you know you shouldn't do something, the more you want to do it.

Temptation. Using the computer to contact someone is akin to eating the forbidden fruit from the forbidden tree of knowledge. Yes, you will learn everything and become aware, as Adam and Eve did when they ate the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge, but you will also sacrifice your 'immortality' (another 'incident' will happen).

The hatch represents the Garden of Eden. It has everything you could ever want - music, food, shower, washing machine, dryer, exercise bike, weaponry, electricity, and a partner to share it with... you can live there forever, safe, happy, etc. With one condition - Use the computer to punch in the numbers and ONLY the numbers.

In the garden of Eden, God provided everything Adam could ever want - safety, companionship, natural beauty, immortality, pure happiness... provided they did not eat from the forbidden tree of knowledge.

Someone has attempted to remove the temptation of using the computer for communication, by removing the source of that temptation - that particular splice of film. But now, instead of Satan convincing Eve to eat from the tree, we have Ecko bringing the splice back, enclosed in a gutted bible... returning the temptation to the Garden of Eden.

And our final shot was of Michael eating the forbidden fruit - using the computer for to communicate with someone else.

Be prepared to see the wrath of God, and don't be surprised to see our lostaways evicted from the hatch now that they've betrayed their single commandment, just as Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden for disobeying God.

(sorry, i couldnt find that thread at the moment, but the poster had some good points)

That makes sense. The film mentioned specific ways in which the computer could be used for other purposes; maybe whoever took that part decided that people didn't need to be given any ideas?

Although, Walt seemed to figure it out, without having seen the film. I'm just wondering if it was really Walt, or if it was, maybe he was being used by the Others to contact someone at the other hatch? To cause another incident? Just thinking out loud here.

Does another hatch (presumably where Walt is) even count as the outside world?

Maybe the film strip that Eko found was not geared toward the Swan hatch. Maybe it was edited out of the Arrow orientation film and when Locke saw a piece of film he naturally thought it was from their orientation film. If things went south on the Island someone could have sabotaged all 6 orientation films.

Everything on the show is definetly getting biblical and the theory that the
missing "splice" represents temptation is very plausable.

That's what I was thinking, that the film is from the Arrow hatch since the good doctor looks so different in it.

I also think there is another piece of the film strip that is still missing, or maybe a few more pieces. The film still seemed a bit incomplete to me after watching it a few times.

There was supposed to be a two man crew manning the Swan station. When Kelvin saves Desmond on the beach he is alone. What happened to his counterpart? He took the piece of film and tried to get off the "Island" but ended up on the other side just like Michael, Jin and Sawyer did. When Desmond first brings the film out it is hidden behind some other books. This piece of film was hidden inside a book. Me thinks the same person was at work.

3 issues
1. do all the stations then have their own orientation video?

2. What was the computer used for that triggered the incident? They can't possibly mean that someone, ie: the MOLE, was trying to access The Lage and post classified info? (just joking here)

3. Excellent point by vertical, corresponds to some of Tib's themes on that thread, however, it appears as something big happened, and we see what is left over on the Island.

Have faith, all shall be revealed, after all, follow Eko, it is fate.

It probably does count as the outside world, as Candle says 'the isolation that attends the duties associated with station 3', suggesting complete isolation, so i think everything outside of station 3 would be considered the outside world.
