View Full Version : The explosion
I like twinkies 2 12-01-2005, 12:10 AM Okay. So it was a natural gas explosion, right?
Kate's playing with a Zippo. Wayne says, 'What's that smell?' We see the gas stove.
But how did she time it until she got out of the house and on her way down the drive? I mean I know there are ways to do this. But what are they? Leave a candle burning?
Did I miss something in the first flashback sequence?
I guess it doesn't really matter but this has got me wondering.

I thought of that too, and I think an explosion that big would have knocked her off the bike too.
newbie8780 12-01-2005, 01:00 AM there had to be some kind of trigger besides a candle because that would have ignited it immediately......maybe wayne smoking a cigerette?? don't know

LOL -- if she used a cigarette, wouldn't that tie in perfectly with what Locke told Sayid that season one?
I don't know how she did it. Hmm. It did seem convenient that the explosion was in perfect timing with her bike. Maybe... I don't know.
Quazar 12-01-2005, 01:18 AM In this episode i've chalked two things up to "movie timing" michael getting the "texts" right after the movie, and the explosion timed with the bike... I think if it isn't just movie timing then remeber, she did wait a few seconds before biking off. Maybe she knew the count of some kind of timing device or something.
Also the marshal said that it was completely amature, it might have been something simple as the lighter sitting in a far room, or a calndle as you said.
Refresh my memory on what lock said plz?
Arcadia 12-01-2005, 03:08 AM Remember when Sayid tried to contact people with the radio by putting antena in certain places? I think it was during "The Moth" He had someone at the beech (I think it was supposed to be Boone but ended up being Shannon) at the beech set a flare gun off, then had Sawyer (well, it was KAte's job, but Sawyer ended up with it) set one off at another location... and then he was hit in the head and it didn't work anyway. Later, Sayid and Locke were trying to figure out who hit him. Locke suggested it was Sawyer. Sayid said it couldn't be because Sawyer lit the flare. Locke said something to the effect of, "well, it could have slowed the fuse down, thereby having enough time to run across the island and hit you. All he needed was a cigarette. Anyone who watches TV knows that."
shred440 12-01-2005, 04:06 AM didn't wayne have an unlit cigerette hanging out of his mouth when she was putting him in bed? I'm not sure though, I have to rewatch it.
withay 12-01-2005, 04:37 AM 1) She leaves an unlit burner on in the house while she waits for Wayne to come home.
If you think about it, all the lights were on also (the spark from turning on a light can set off a gas explosion).
2) She tucks Wayne in, making sure his lighter is in the other room, knowing that he will most likely smoke a cigarette before going to sleep.
3) She leaves, making sure she has put all means of lighting his cigarette in another room, thus giving her time to get down the road.
4) Wayne gets up, finds a lighter in the other room, attempts to light his cigarette and goes boom.
5) She does not even look back so we know she knew what would happen.
And I, for one, do not believe for one moment that Wayne had never touched her. I think, finding out that he was committing incest in addition to molestation and beating her mother was enough to put Kate over the edge.

Locke admitted to Sayid in a later epi, can't remember which one, that he is the one who hit him on the head. He didn't want Sayid doing somehting stupid by sending a signal to god knows who.

No, no cigarette in his mouth.
==========
Personally, I think it's a far stretch to think that with his being as drunk as he was, and all tucked in to bed, that he'd then get up and light a cigarette in the short amount of time that Kate had before she drove off. She either left the lighter sitting somewhere to ignite the blast or it was set up some other way.

Sounds good and probably is what happened. But, what I don't understand is how does this make it amaturish?
Anyone could accidently have a pilot light go out. Anyone who has ever had a gas stove has had this happen at one time or another. And when a person is drunk, they do all sorts of stupid stuff.
The one thing she did that was stupid was going to her mother afterwards and then running. She should have just put a big flashing light on the back of her bike that said "MURDERER". If she would have "been out somewhere" she would have had a better chance of getting away with it.
