View Full Version : OK....that darn hatch again newbie8780 12-01-2005, 12:23 AM Does anyone have any GOOD ideas about the two hatches.....one full of everything...a shower...beds...books....music???? and the other nothing but a trunk full of splices and a glass eye?? Vertical 12-01-2005, 12:32 AM Someone clearly has been in both hatches. They took the splice from the original film and moved it all the way across the island. That said, in my opinion, the missing 'splice' represents temptation. The fact that it said, repeatedly "Whatever you do, DON'T USE THE COMPUTER TO TRY TO CONTACT ANYONE ELSE" just screams "Hey, I want to try that". Classic psychology... the more you know you shouldn't do something, the more you want to do it. Temptation. Using the computer to contact someone is akin to eating the forbidden fruit from the forbidden tree of knowledge. Yes, you will learn everything and become aware, as Adam and Eve did when they ate the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge, but you will also sacrifice your 'immortality' (another 'incident' will happen). The hatch represents the Garden of Eden. It has everything you could ever want - music, food, shower, washing machine, dryer, exercise bike, weaponry, electricity, and a partner to share it with... you can live there forever, safe, happy, etc. With one condition - Use the computer to punch in the numbers and ONLY the numbers. In the garden of Eden, God provided everything Adam could ever want - safety, companionship, natural beauty, immortality, pure happiness... provided they did not eat from the forbidden tree of knowledge. Someone has attempted to remove the temptation of using the computer for communication, by removing the source of that temptation - that particular splice of film. But now, instead of Satan convincing Eve to eat from the tree, we have Ecko bringing the splice back, enclosed in a gutted bible... returning the temptation to the Garden of Eden. And our final shot was of Michael eating the forbidden fruit - using the computer for to communicate with someone else. Be prepared to see the wrath of God, and don't be surprised to see our lostaways evicted from the hatch now that they've betrayed their single commandment, just as Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden for disobeying God. newbie8780 12-01-2005, 12:45 AM OK....as scared as I am that this will take some freak religion factor on (clearly eko is very religious) I think that maybe the other hatch was used by refugees of the first only because there was only the trunk Gobi-1 12-01-2005, 01:09 AM Someone clearly has been in both hatches. So then Eko is satan? wareagle57 12-01-2005, 01:29 AM I thought they would take that direction too, but if they were going to do this, then they should have not had Michael use it for that BEFORE he knew not to. acegibb 12-01-2005, 01:31 AM Me? I figure that they have to watch the video again Except that they have to set it up so that it is playing through the glass eye. Anybody remember Wild Wild West? When they projected the last image that the guy saw onto a screen? Yeah, something like that. What would it show? Hidden 3-D image? Vertical 12-01-2005, 10:42 AM So then Eko is satan? In a certain sense, yes. I don't know if they'll play his character out in that sense, but he's playing the role that Satan played in the tale of the Garden of Eden. JFO 12-01-2005, 04:34 PM I''m not sure if you're right or not, but this was one outstanding read. J (one with a minor in religious studies) Someone clearly has been in both hatches. Slopster53 12-01-2005, 04:41 PM The deserted Hatch is probably one that had an "incident" occur. One interesting theory in the BLAST DOORS thread said that the second abandoned station was so small because the blast doors had come down and sealed off most of that Station. This might lend credence to the idea that and "incident" did occur in that hatch. Roland 12-01-2005, 09:41 PM I was thinking similar to that also. If the incident had occurred in the arrow hatch, it could be why it is deserted. But the blast could have occurred in the swan hatch also. It could explain why the ladder was broken off before the bottom - maybe from an explosion. RiverTheBald 12-01-2005, 10:09 PM Does anyone have any GOOD ideas about the two hatches.....one full of everything...a shower...beds...books....music???? and the other nothing but a trunk full of splices and a glass eye?? I have a very simple idea about them. The "incident" occured at The Swan (aka The Hatch) and because of the "incident" someone is needed to keep pressing the button. Dharma cleaned out the other station(s) because it (they) were no longer needed. The Swan has supplies because it's the only one still up and running. So, except for The Swan, Dharma packed it's tent and went home. joeywally 12-01-2005, 11:04 PM So then Eko is satan? Eko is not satan, that would be Dr. Marvin Candle. Although it's as if Eko is the voice of Satan delivering the message, but I like him too much for that to be the case. waywardwanderer 12-01-2005, 11:32 PM I have been saying it for a few weeks now. Eko is evil. Maybe not knowingly so, but he is. What kind of man steals a bible that does not belong to him? LOL! I laugh about it, but seriously, that was foreshadowing if I ever saw it. When they projected the last image that the guy saw onto a screen? Yeah, something like that. What would it show? Hidden 3-D image? I actually really like that idea. It seems like the solution to an old Infocom text adventure. Y'know, using items improbably in order to get the next piece of information. It would also make the owner of the eye a sort of walking decoding machine. Probably a little too complex for this show, but still a fun thought. acegibb 12-03-2005, 01:30 AM I was actually thinking Monkey Island style of thinking. You know in Part 2, when you need a shovel.. and the only shovel on the island is on the NO Digging sign. Pull Sign.... You got the shovel!!!! My friend and I were laughing at that one for weeks afterward. Seriously though, this is the type of thinking that will get them off the island. Because nothing is normal they need to think abnormally. In This case, that parallels "don't use the computer for anything else". So, the Satan figure would be the one tempting someone to use the computer for something other than imputting the numbers... Walt, or whoever is on the other side of that conversation Michael had on the computer. Following the above analogy, I would say Eko is in the role of God - he is the one communicating the one rule. Great analogy there, this would tie up well with the two corpses jack found that were nicknamed adam and eve, they may have been ejected from the hatch some time in the past.
