I can't even tell you how I almost passed out laughing when Eko was sitting at the table and Locke came in and says "Hello again".....Their conversations always start out so cute kinda like school kids as 'scubagert' said to me in a prior thread. They are so much alike and I just love their interaction.

Locke seemed to truly enjoy Eko's story as well, wish I thought was cool. A little birdy named Damon has stated that this relationship is the main focus of the rest of the season, and I honestly could not be happier to hear it. Definately my current favorite characters.

After Eko, Mike and Locke watched the video and Eko stood up, I thought to myself, "What Eko says next will be great." Instead, he just walked out the room. I *still* thought that was great. I agree, Locke and Eko and great characters and even better together.

Well, great minds think alike.
But I imagine those two are going to be doing some big time investigating of the island. I think any info we get on the mysteries is going to come mostly from them.

Eko is the bomb. I love this character! His eyes are freaky, and he's so calm. I think he makes Locke uncomfortable.

I think Locke sees Eko's wisdom. In future episodes I could see Eko being sort of a mentor to Locke. Both Locke and Eko seems to have faith in knowing that everthing has a purpose and they are there for a reason; however, Locke seems to take leaps of blind faith where as Eko uses wisdom and thinks things through before acting. That's something that I think Locke admires in Eko.

You can tell that because the way he looks at Eko. Like what is he going to say next look, but not in a negative way - in a fascinated way.

You know, I was thinking that Locke was looking a bit wary when Eko introduced his bible story... like "Jeez, I could be stranded on an island, thousands of miles from civilization, and I *still* get witnessing from Bible thumpers.." but the story improved.. I did a double take when the Book's secret was revealed.

Personally, I think the best bit of dialogue between the two of them is when Eko says (and forgive me, I don't know the exact quote) "Let me start at the beginning" and proceeds to tell the story of the King Judah and Locke quips back "When you said start at the beginning you weren't kidding". That was priceless and classic Locke! Great episode!

I agree that Locke and Eko make a great team and they are my favorite characters. What's more important though is did anyone notice that Eko actually knew something that Locke didn't? If you want to know who Locke and Eko are just look at the Yin/Yang symbol -- it's obvious that they complimnet each other.

im really excited to see eko's backstory because i'm getting ever so slightly annoyed with his attitude of being so wise and all knowing. i mean...don't you have one thousand questions for the fuselage survivors? no, you just say hello and sit quietly. i think that the locke/eko storyline will be great but i'm ready for eko to get involved!!

These two are great together. They are my favorite charaters. I like that Eko looks like he will be a balance to Locke. I really like when he told Locke "do not mistake coincidence for fate." These are two of the most faith based characters on the show.

I am very excited for the next episode.

Hmm...maybe it's just me, but I don't think these two are going to be a good team. In fact, I think later on they are going to be on opposing sides....

I think there is foreshadowing of this when Eko tells Locke, "don't confuse coincidence with fate". Right there, I think that describes their different outlooks. Locke sees everything that's happening as "destined" or fated to happen; Eko seems to be thinking that there is something a lot less spiritual going down.

I totally agree with you. I definitely noticed some tension between the two characters.

I especially think Locke is going to start getting a little touchy about Eko. Up til now, Locke has been the island "shaman" or spiritual center...but now Eko is coming in and taking his thunder.

I predict some serious friction in upcoming episodes between the two.

Well, obviously from my moniker, I LOVE Locke! The Locke/Eko dynamic is fascinating to watch. And I'm with Seamonkey regarding the priceless hilarity of the little exchange wherein Eko says "Let me start at the beginning", and starts off with the whole "Many years before Christ, the king of Judea was..." or whatever he said and then my main man, Locke, replied with "Well, when you say 'beginning', you really mean beginning!" ROFLMBO!!!!!!!! And I, too, love how intently Locke listens not just to Eko but to everyone (except Hurley...that situation bothers me, but that is for another thread *lol*).

I did pick up on the message to Locke, I won't use the word "warning" like one poster did, because that may be a bit strong, but he was definitely trying to impart a message bordering on, or possibly IN, the territory of "warning", as it certainly was an important one to heed, if it is what I think it was. I took Eko, when he said "I think there is something in this book that will be useful to you" or whatever the exact words were, to maybe NOT be talking about the film, as we all and Locke probably assumed he was. Maybe, given the story he had just told about false idols, he was trying to say this, which is something I've posted about regarding Locke and I even used the phrase false idols at the time (weird, wild, wacky: synchronicity!). Anyway, here's what I think Eko was saying, in addition to the obvious thing of simply giving Locke the film:

The subtext of the story and the way he said there was something in the book that will be useful to Locke was:

"Locke, look beyond pressing the button every 108 minutes as being the 'destiny' you quite rightly intuitively feel you have here on the island. Look beyond the trappings of the hatch and what is seemingly going on, and deeper to what your true destiny might be, which might be figuring out and exposing the REAL truth of what is going on on the island and, far from being a part of it, freeing everyone on the island from these things by being a shaman, a teacher, and a leader and showing everyone how ugly the truth of the "Dharma Initiative" really is, and how the truly beautiful "eye of the island" that you have looked into is not anything to do with the hatch or the button or the Dharma Iniative et al, but is to do with the island itself!"

Yup, I read all that into what Eko said *LOL*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He could have been talking not of the film in the book being useful to Locke, but of the CHOICE between being blinded by false idols (represented by the film) and truth/true destiny (represented by the actual words in that spiritual book about moral laws and ethics, right and wrong, and all that good jazz!).

P.S.! Was the look on Locke's face when he saw the mug of one "Dr. Marvin Candle" in the frames of the film not PRICELESS! Locke is totally authentic and real at all times. I love the character so much!

I think Locke was much more open to Eko posturing than I would have given him credit for. He was listening intently and looked like he was giving Eko the benefit of the doubt, which he hasn't really given anybody else accept "the island". I can't speculate what will happen between them, but I think they will hopefully respect each other enough to keep things civil even if they do come out on competing sides.

Locke and Ecko are certainly supposed to be a Yin Yang type.

Look at the similarity of their names, except Ecko is close to being Locke in reverse.

Look at the clue of "Gilgamesh" in the crossword while Locke was in the hatch last week.

Look at how they interact with each other--one white, one dark, both full of wisdom..

Oh believe me I when I say that Eko would be a good balance to Locke I do not mean to imply that they will necessaraly be a team, at least for now. I really expect them to clash over their views, but I do eventually expect them to work together. I really do think that the coincidence and fate line is a foreshadowing of something to come later.

I just really enjoy the two of them on screen together.

Quote from Dardin: "Locke sees everything that's happening as "destined" or fated to happen; Eko seems to be thinking that there is something a lot less spiritual going down."

I'm with the Dardin quote in the sense that, as I said in describing what I believe is the subtext in the story Eko told Locke, I think Eko can sense (he's very intuitive, like Locke) that Locke is so wanting to follow his probably-correct intuition that the island is his destiny and he has to do whatever "it" asks of him, that he's got the "it" wrong. He's following the wrong shiny idols. He sees everything put before him as a part of what he is supposed to be following, part of his destiny, and he isn't currently separating the "idols" from the "real destiny" here. Yes, Locke (I believe, anyway) has a destiny to fulfill on the island, one of shaman, leader, truth teller. But there is a danger that instead, he will be dazzled by "false idols", and like I said, I have used that exact term to describe the danger Locke is in in another post a long time ago because I see that as his big inner conflict and epic challenge: to separate the wheat the the chaffe (sp.?), the false idols from the true destiny. He needs to trust a little less and question a little more. It is good that Locke has gone from a place of (understandable!) anger in his life to a place of acceptance, as that has un-paralyzed him from constantly asking "WHY?" and allowed him to be the great accepter, listener, empathizer and shaman that he has become and is still ever-deeping as, yet he is almost TOO trusting now, as he is still human and still looking for what he never had, parents, home, etc. He has swung too far in the other direction from always asking WHY to now always trusting EVERYTHING. He now has substituted "destiny" for those "parents" and "home", because he really senses that his destiny is on the island, yet I don't think it is in the places he is currently looking, because he is too desperate to find it. He went a tad too far in taking his own advice on "how anything lost gets found" and stopping looking. He's accepting everything at face value now a little too much. He needs to look a little deeper and not accept everything that comes his way as "destiny". Locke is spot on, I believe, that destiny (along with, imho, more than a little help from the Hanso Foundation *lol*) brought him to the island. However, Locke's destiny doesn't have to do with pushing the button every 108 minutes! As he correctly blurted out, "It wasn't supposed to be like this!" I think Eko is gently, cryptically trying to get Locke to realize all this on his own. Locke's destiny is for far greater things...like finding out the truth, telling it, and somehow righting things so that the true "eye of the island" can shine beautifully once again.

Here's what I got from Ecko's story:
Ecko was speaking of a civilization in it's infancy. This civilization was going to grow in one of two directions. The first direction would be positive, a good thing whereas the second direction would be negative, a bad thing. One direction would be led by one leader while the other would be led by another. Dude came back with the "book of laws" or the old testament which then acted as a guidepost for the people. What I find unclear is whether ecko thought the direction that civilization went was positive or negative.
By giving Locke access to that missing film, he is also giving him a great amount of power. Similar to the way in which buddy came back from with the Old Testament. Ecko sees an eagerness in Locke that he isnot completely comfortable with, an eagerness that could potentially lead to ruin.
Face it, what's going on with the survivors is a VERY spiritual thing. This whole Dharma initiative thing is turning into a pseudo-God.

I like the way this story is turning.

That's what I was getting at when I said I think Eko makes Locke uncomfortable. Kind of like he's afraid he'll steal his thunder or something. I do like them together though.

As for the "false idol" line from Eko, the first thing I thought of was how Locke seems to worship the Island, and it'd be his "false idol."

I too sense some- let's call it tension-- from Locke toward Mr Eko.

I think he knows that this new guy has more spiritual wisdom, and it
threatens him a bit. however, I think he is also interested in hearing
that wisdom, and learning.

it'll be interesting to see in which direction John goes-- as student or as
adversary to Mr Eko.

King Josiah received PART of the Old Testament, btw. the entire O.T. hadn't
been written yet. Josiah appears in part of it, after all. :)

It's a story about Getting Back to Basics--finding your FIRST God, so to speak.

John looked into the island, and it was beautiful. Now, he's taking the whole
hatch/bunker and button as his destiny.

He has left his first "God". I agree with those who say that Mr Eko was
trying to lead him back to the 'real' and away from the 'false' idol.

This should be quite interesting.

I too think it will be intersting. They already have a lot in common, because they both are spiritual in some way. I think that Locke will learn from Eko more than fight him. When Eko said that thing about mistaking coinidence for fate, Locke seemed very interested. Also, Locke doesnt have anyone else to talk about faith or spiritual things with; that's why I think they'll get along.

GB - you are so funny! The title is funny when you first look at it. I came up with it while I was watching actually. If Damon really said that, then I believe more than ever that they will become adversaries, even if it is just because Locke goes crazy and says, "This is what is supposed to happen! We are supposed to become enemies!" To which Eko replies, "Do not mistake coincidence for fate." And then? It's on.

If the rest of the season is about them, I expect the rift to occur in the season finale.

Locke has always been my favorite character - not that I dislike the others. He's just the one that makes me think the most. The way he seems to know exactly what a person needs, mentally, physically, emotionally has always intrigued me. Eko seems cut from the same sort of cloth. Different in the weaving maybe, but just as mysterious and possessing that same odd ability to see into places where others don't.

His story about Josiah was perfect. His words about not confusing fate with coincidence I think would have flown over the head of some of the others, but not Locke. Notice? He knew exactly what EKo meant. Had the same line been delivered to Jack or Sawyer, they'd have shrugged it off. Sayid would have looked for the practicality in it I think. Locke understood.

So yeah, these two have something special about them and I love the lines that come from both. It's not just feeding your brain, it's making your brain work - which is really one of the most attractive features of the show anyway.

I’ve really enjoyed reading this thread, I think there are very interesting reflections posted here.

I wanted to say that I just realized that the “Hello” – “Hello” from “Collision” was also a foreshadowing of this episode’s “Hello?” – “Hello?” in the computer. It’s great that the writers get to play it right at so many levels. They said something in the podcast about “Collision”, but I just got it now.
