View Full Version : Items found in the Hatch and the Outside World
Todell 12-04-2005, 07:25 PM lacenaire found that an eight-sided box (http://img347.imageshack.us/img347/138/katehouse9jh.jpg) on a shelf in Wayne's house (close-up) (http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/8921/box5pt.jpg) appears to also be in the hatch. (http://www.lost-media.com/modules/coppermine/albums/ep-caps/season2/2x09-kate/5/normal_kate-cap480.jpg)
Interesting, since a geiger counter (http://soulykeeper.proboards25.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=clues2&thread=1129549658&page=1) in Locke's bedroom seems to be in the hatch as well.
Any other items?
Simplist 12-04-2005, 08:06 PM a black horse?
a toy plane?
lacenaire 12-04-2005, 08:58 PM Hi Todell, the credit for finding the box is to Plastique from lostTv.
Do the objects need to be exactly the same?
- The black horse figurine in Wayne's house transformed in a "real" black horse?
- Desmond counts too?
- The Statuettes of the Virgin Mary : Hurley's living room and in the Catholic Church where Charlie goes to confess. Then in the island they hold the "Horse". http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y82/lacenaire/Statuettes.jpg
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/2158/hurleyslivingroom7ww.jpg
- Charlie's drugs: Same type of small plastic bags.
Kristatos30 12-04-2005, 09:18 PM Hmm...i can't help but think that maybe its just a reuse of props? If not what're you suggesting? That the survivors are remembering certain objects from their past and somehow manage to manifest them on the island?

Awesome Todell. I questioned that box on the LLL. It stuck out like a sore thumb, and after all the talk of octagons etc., I hoped it would connect somehow. :ntworthy:
Dmcquickly 12-05-2005, 08:58 AM I'm more for the running out of props theory, since we lostaways tend to overanalyze a lot of stuff on this show. But if it's just re-using props, seems kind of careless. Still, I imagine it gets mighty expensive making sets for all those flashbacks, so it may just be a cost-saving philosophy, and TPTB never thought we'd do so much analysis of the minutiae.
Dino 23F 12-05-2005, 10:09 AM tptb know we analyze everything to death. its kinda their fault, with all the websites and stuff, so either they are messing with us or there is an explanation comeing down the line.
React 12-05-2005, 07:03 PM Any chance those items are "magical" in nature and are a way for those in charge of the island to be in contact or control with those who survived?
goddessblue 12-06-2005, 12:05 AM In Raised By Another, Claire has the same lava lamp in her apartment as in the hatch.
waltisfuture 12-06-2005, 01:45 AM I remember thinking that I'd seen the giant can opener somewhere before, but when I posted this idea I called it a meat grinder.
No clear memory of when or where, but I thought it might spark someone else's memory.
stircrazy 12-06-2005, 02:04 AM I would like to lean towards reuse of props, but how can a show of such high quality and standards allow such noteworthy props to be reused?
very-lost 12-06-2005, 01:39 PM There have also been alot of globes. Lawyers office during Michael settlement talks, Claire's pyshic's house, a few others I can't remember.
Believe them to all be a little differnt but not real sure.
Tom Chaney 12-06-2005, 01:51 PM Likely just a reuse of props... but that's a pretty unique box.
sheba 12-06-2005, 01:54 PM Likely just a reuse of props... but that's a pretty unique box.
Exactly ... and since it is so unique, you would have thought Kate would have recognized it by now if it is supposed to be the same one. Or even it it isn't actually. I can think of several occasions when I have seen something at someone's house and commented, "Oh my grandmother has something very similar in her house."

Yeah, the globes are everywhere. In Walkabout, they're all over the Walkabout office (but that would be fairly typical) and when Jack is at his parent's house talking to his mom (I think it's White Rabbit) and she's telling him to go after his dad in Aus., there is a globe on a table. Once you notice it once or twice, those darn globes really pop out at you, lol.
memememe 12-06-2005, 02:18 PM does anyone have screencaps of all of these globes?
Aphasia_1 12-06-2005, 04:29 PM As with the others (:o), I think it might be a re-use of props. But I don't think so. I think it will have to do with interjecting island items into the memories. But that's a whole other theory!
welloflostplots 12-06-2005, 04:46 PM I believe there is some connection with a ships wheel........in ana's flashback, just before she shoots jason, she is sitting on a bar stool....above her head hanging on the wall is a ships wheel.........when sawyer talks to christian in the bar you can see a ships wheel hanging on the wall behind christian. they are 2 different wheels......the reason why I think they are important is because of the dharma logo, which is a tao symbol called a bagua (the dharma wheel is also similar but is budhist ) anyway both are derived from The wheel of life which is exactly like a ship wheel......i also think the oceanic symbol is a form of the wheel of life. Photos of all are on my website (Im still working on it so bare with me but the photos of the things I have metioned are all there. http://mysite.verizon.net/vzepk8h4/itsallrelative/id15.html
Sam G 12-07-2005, 05:02 PM I believe the "Long LOST List" has a list of all the globes. We also had many sightings of airplanes, models and toys. There is a plane in Claire's bedroom and one in the Travel office, the mobile in Claire's dream.
Claire's dream she see's Locke reading the Tarot cards and the same lamp is in the Psychic's. One of the first duplicate use of props. I, personally, think it means something.

I can't see your picture (blocked at work) for the 'geiger counter' but if it's the thing that sat next to Locke's bed, I thought that was a dialysis machine seeing as how he's short a kidney and all that.

No, it's not the machine next to his bed (dialysis machine? electromagnetic stimulation device for his legs? I don't think we know one way or another yet). The geiger counter in on a table in the foreground of this particular shot.
By the way! Thanks for all the other great catches, y'all! The lava lamp and the psychic's lamps are fascinating. And Desmond! Of course!
Sam G 12-07-2005, 05:55 PM The Machine next to Locke's bed is a TENS unit. It's been discussed and identified many times. Old threads when the episode first aired.

Fire_Fly 12-07-2005, 05:55 PM maybe all of these repeating objects we keep seeing are supposed to enforce the fact that these characters are all connected somehow...??
SteveinNC 12-07-2005, 09:12 PM tptb know we analyze everything to death. its kinda their fault, with all the websites and stuff, so either they are messing with us or there is an explanation comeing down the line.
Passenger 23F, it's ABSOLUTELY ther fault that we analyze everything in great detail, having seen some of the things we have....just one example, the Dharma logo on the shark. I don't think they had anyway of knowing just how closely we would end up watching. But when you have a character speaking backwards and have to rely on the web to find out what he says, I say it's their fault we look at each little thing...play and replay!
I don't think they had any idea what they were getting in to. I just hope when it all comes down to it, they rise to the occasion. They have acquired a very intelligent audience who won't tolerate a lame conclusion or weak storytelling. I was extremely disappointed when I read that the numbers may never be explained, after they made such a big deal out of them.

Sam G 12-13-2005, 02:16 PM I was looking for something in TR and Part II of the Pilot episode. The lighter, or one like it, that Kate used in What Kate Did, she uses in TR. Sawyer and Jack both use one like it in both of those episodes. Reliable Zippo's
Todell 12-13-2005, 06:31 PM Excellent catch, Sam G. I saw the post about this on Juice as well. You've made some great connections there...

That was a good find Sam
What if these items were were placed on 'the island' to ignite memories

I've noticed that one too. There's also one at the walkabout office.
car88win 12-13-2005, 07:19 PM Hey Sam, that box....has anyone listed in the LLL thread? Would need to add that to weird props/recurring imagery section.
Sam G 12-13-2005, 08:37 PM Hey Sam, that box....has anyone listed in the LLL thread? Would need to add that to weird props/recurring imagery section.
No I don't think the box has been listed there.
Coupons, That crossed my mind too. We just haven't had island things to connect to the outside world flashbacks. I'm hoping that more things start to pop up.
I think I know LOST pretty well but everytime we get new information it changes what we saw the first time. I think I'm going to go back and just watch the Kate episodes back to back and then do it with Locke's and Jack's because they have the most and see what comes from that.
Sam G 01-06-2006, 09:10 PM That box that was in the Hatch and Wanye and Diane's now shows up in Essam's the apartemtn that Sayid went to in The Greater Good.

Are you serious? That dang box gets around! I'm gonna have to watch TGG again!! Funny, I was just going through the transcripts for TGG today for The BLU-Q List, ended up reading the whole thing, lol. After spotting that box in so many places it HAS to be deliberate, and for a reason, IMO. Not just the prop guys reusing props. They know how we watch this show. I mean, they wouldn't do that just to mess with us would they? That would just be cruel.
TabbyRasa 01-06-2006, 09:48 PM That box that was in the Hatch and Wany and Diane's now shows up in Assem's the apartemtn that Sayid went to in The Greater Good.
Thanks, Sam G...I posted about it in Visual Inconsistencies and should have posted it here!
Todell 01-06-2006, 10:42 PM Ha! I had totally forgotten about this thread that I started! Of course that box belongs here.
Now.
What was it doing in Essam's house, and Wayne's house? Who put it (them?) there? I was thinking that perhaps someone other than Essam or Wayne brought it (them) into the houses. Diane, maybe? One of the other terrorists? And as I was discussing that with cmcd, she pointed out this interesting (and familiar) conversation from The Greater Good:
HADDAD: Who are you?
SAYID: I was a communications officer.
ESSAM TAZIA: Sayid was a Republican Guard. He knows things.
(Haddad glances over at Essam, then returns his gaze back to Sayid.)
HADDAD: Perhaps it's not happenstance that you and Essam met at the mosque.
(Essam looks confused. Sayid doesn't respond.)
HADDAD: Perhaps it is fate.
Hmmm....one might say it's a mirror conversation of this one from What Kate Did:
LOCKE: Voila. What are the odds?
EKO: The odds?
LOCKE: Here, hold this down on the table there nice and flat. I mean, think about it. Somebody made this film. Someone else cut this piece out. We crash -- 2 halves of the same plane fall in different parts of the island -- you're over there, I'm over here. And now, here's the missing piece right back where it belongs. What are the odds?
EKO: Don't mistake coincidence for fate.
Heh. Perhaps I should start a "Conversations had in the hatch and the outside world..."
But, my point is, perhaps the connection between the box and Essam is through Haddad. Perhaps it is his box... or he was ordered to put it there...
sheba 01-06-2006, 10:46 PM hmmm ... interesting thought ... maybe the hatch mirrors the outside world.
*cues Twilight Zone music*
goddessblue 01-06-2006, 11:19 PM Todell, I read through TGG today while searching for a couple of things. I saw that fate/happenstance/coincidence mirror as well! It struck me, I made a note of it and then forgot about it, lol. Makes me want to go through S1 with a magnifying glass to see if the box is anywhere else.

Aaron C 01-06-2006, 11:46 PM The mural (Remember, Claire's boyfriend was a painter/artist) was quite similar in Claire's old home, and a Lava Lamp, very similar to the one in the Hatch, appears behind Thomas during the scene she discovers she is pregnant.

I think the angle is strange on the hatch picture. It may be bigger than the one on the shelves in Wayne and Diane's but there really isn't a great shot of it either.
