For a con man, Sawyer doesn't come across as very smooth.

I wonder if there's a slick or more polished side to Sawyer that we haven't seen yet or maybe he's just not that good a con man (which seems likely considering that he's been caught in the past).

Actually, I think he is an exceptionally good con man. You have to remember, his deal is to hook the wife and then take the husband for the money. Look at the backstory for Confidence Man (Season 1). Pay close attention to what he's wearing. The suit he's wearing in the restaurant is very expensive, as is the tie. Also, when he's at the couple's home, picking up the money, notice what he's wearing there. That suit is also very expensive and notice how his hair looks, it's brushed back off his face and very neat.

It's very easy for us to wonder how good he is because we see him now, dirty and scruffy and not in his element. If we were privy to all the different things in his backstory then we'd probably be more willing to accept him as good at what he does.

And finally, the plain and simple truth is that women love the bad boy looks that clean up really good....I can attest to this personally.

That's only one of the reasons why we love our Sawyer.

P.S. Besides, would you give $160 grand to a guy who wasn't, shall we say, "good at what he does?"

Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticising the character or how he's written, I just think that it's interesting that we've never seen him turn on the charm just yet.

Might be interesting to see a future episode where Sawyer has to play "con man" to save the day, acting all slick and charming and have the rest of the
castaways saying things like: "We liked that guy you were pretending to be, why can't you act like that all the time ?"

Come to think of it, this is actually very true. Sawyer has been trying to avoid rather than turning his charms on the others after the plane crash. This is probably because he's never really like being a con man or there's really not much to gain from the people on the island?

He was busted for being a con man..he was arrested in Austrailia for headbutting the secretery of agriculture in a bar and they read his rap sheet to him. That doesn't make him bad...just unlucky.

He hated becoming what he swore to hunt. He hated Sawyer yet he became him...very tragic. But he did make life hard in the first few weeks on the Island for people by taking and hording things they needed...but parted with them for a price...remember "Light comma sticks"?? TOO FUNNY!

I'm sorry I didn't mean to insinuate anything about the character....I really do like your idea of him having to save the day, so to speak, by acting all charming and slick....I think that would be a great thing to have happen.

We'll see, you never know, something like that just might happen.

P.S. Yea, BD, I remember that and thought it was great....I loved that look he had on his face as he was looking at her legs....wonder what was going through his mind?? (nevermind, I don't think I wanna know!)

Shannon: You got it, or what?
Sawyer: (reading Watership Down) You're in my light, Sticks.
Shannon: Light sticks, what the hell is that?
Sawyer: Light comma Sticks, as in those legs of yours (stares at Shannon's legs)
Shannon: Look, while I really love my new nickname and I think it...
Sawyer: Calm down! I got your damn stuff. (tosses can to Shannon)
Shannon: It'll keep of sand fleas?
Sawyer: Yep, even has aloe.
Shannon: How much?
Sawyer: Your money's no good here.
Shannon: Then what the hell do you want?
Sawyer: (grins at Shannon)
Shannon: If you think I'm gonna....
Sawyer: 5 grand (he's not grinning when it comes to money)
Shannon: I thought you said my money wasn't good here?
Sawyer: I was negotiating. I could take an IOU, something tells me you're good...for it.
Shannon: (disgusted, throws can at Sawyer, walks away)

Personally I'm getting tired of Sawyer the con man. Like Charlie's heroin I honestly don't want to see any more about it. We know he is a con man. We know he can 'con' and that he himself has been 'conned'. Don't take that as a bash please...just me wishing they would do more with his character.

I'd instead to know more about his background. How did he grow up? In foster homes? With relatives? Was it voilent? Was he neglected? What happened during the time between his parent's death and when he started 'scamming'. Did he think he had no other choice in life?

I would imagine before it's over with we'll know some of these things. In the script for Confidence Man, one of the pieces that was not used mentions him living with his aunt and uncle and his uncle telling him about the man named "Sawyer" at his mother's wake. One of the quotes is, "...apparently, you don't get a wake when you kill yourself." talking about his father.

Also, in the first issue of the LOST magazine, there is a description of the character and it mentions him living with his aunt and uncle and then in foster homes.

I agree though, I would like to know more about his formative years and what happened with all that. I'm sure that will really figure into this distrust of women issue that he has. Who knows we might find out some of that info in the upcoming backstory in February.

Also at the end of Confidence Man we do learn a little snippet about his past when he confesses himself to Kate.

Sawyer: ...but that ain't the sad part. When I was 19 I needed 6 grand to pay off these guys I's in trouble with. So I found a pretty lady, with a dumb husband who had some money, and I got 'em to give it to me....I became the man I's huntin'. I became Sawyer.

Hope this info helps you.

Take care,
Lisa

I bought the script a few months ago and I found that when I was reading it.
