View Full Version : Desmond's popularity
MissLesley 12-16-2005, 10:08 AM I'm thrilled and amazed to see the number of posts that Ian is getting. I hope the powers that be realize how much his Desmond character is interesting and popular with the fans and that we want MORE of Desmond...well....not more more...I MEAN, we saw him in his undies, and in the shower.....just more of his character......ok FINE...MORE MORE is good too..:harhar1:
I'm WORRIED about him running around in that crazy jungle....I imagine he was headed towards where his boat crashed....maybe the black horsey could give him a ride and keep him safe.
Merry Christmas all.....
GOOD things to come on LOST in the NEW YEAR......
Hope the cast takes some drivers ed while on a break...ahem::undecide: WHAT? I'm JUST sayin'
xoxo

Save The Humans 12-30-2005, 12:16 AM Check out the How Will Desmond Come Back thread, MissLesley. All the details we know so far are there.
And it's a "no" on "The Hunting Party." No Desmond in it. I am :unhappy:. I am . I am :bawling:. I'm afraid there's just no consolation for me! :sadwalk:
Happy New Year to everyone, anyway.

TPTB have said that Desmond will be back because he has a lot to share so I'm sure we'll see him on both Lost and 24.
Save The Humans 12-31-2005, 02:39 AM TPTB say a lot of things, Jane. It's getting increasingly difficult to believe anything they say, though!
HAPPY NEW YEAR
to the whole Cusick family, and to all of you fellow Desmondites!
jbdean 12-31-2005, 02:25 PM Oh, I believe them, STH. But I will agree with you (and everyone else that's getting anxious) that they are taking WAY too long to bring him back!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU, TOO!!!

i_ love_ lost 01-02-2006, 06:56 PM why is desmond so popular
Desdemona_83 01-02-2006, 08:29 PM Hi, i_love_lost, welcome to the Desmond boards. Though I can't speak for everyone, I can give you some reasons why I (and undoubtedly many others) love Desmond.
First and foremost, he's fascinatingly enigmatic. Why was Desmond in the hatch? How long was he there? How much does he really know? How much of what he told Jack can be believed? What's the deal with the vials with which he was injecting himself? Did he ever leave? What really happened to Kelvin? Why did he give Jack that abstruse advice in the stadium? Desmond holds the answer to all these questions, and the longer he's absent from the show, the more antsy we are to discover the truth! Notice the many threads on this board that speculate on what Desmond's story is, how he'll return, how much he really knows, etc.
Secondly, he seems to be a caring and compassionate character, which is nice after listening to all the drama and fighting coming from the other castaways. We just think he's a genuinely nice guy! But at the same time, we want to find out if there is a deeper, darker level to Desmond that belies the nice-guy appearance.
Thirdly, and I think I speak for most of the ladies on the board ;), he's magnetically attractive! Great smile, great hair, great eyes, great *ahem* body... to put it plainly, where do I sign up to get me a piece of that? :lol2: The accent doesn't hurt, either. To those of us stuck in the US (or Spain or Hungary), his accent is charming and exotic, and thus highly appealing.
I've probably told you waaaay more than you wanted to know! But them's the real reasons (at least, some of them) why :desmond:
Again, welcome! I hope you'll continue to post in the Desmond forum.
Save The Humans 01-02-2006, 09:29 PM Good job, Desdemona! :clapping:
Doesn't hurt that HIC is a terrific actor, making what could've been a stereotyped character into a fully multi-dimensional person with whom everyone would like to meet and be friends!

Excellent point, STH! Undoubtedly HIC's - Henry Ian Cusick, i_love_lost, just in case you aren't aware of the actor's name - compelling portrayal of the character is an integral part of Desmond's magnetism!
Save The Humans 01-02-2006, 10:37 PM Absolutely, Desdemona! We've already seen what hiring the WRONG actor for a role can do (**coughMichelleRodriguezcough**). So finding an actor who is even BETTER than right for a role--the LOST people got a gift in HIC. . .and why they are throwing such a gift away is beyond my comprehension!
MissLesley 01-03-2006, 11:21 AM Desdemona....AMEN....my SISTAH!!!! ;)
(The ACTING that he did in such a short time and the EXPRESSIVNESS in his FACE, he didn't even NEED that much air time to really GRAB a fan base) How many actors could have told the WHOLE story of how he got there and what happened in 3 years it THAT amount of time???? AHEM.....the HAIR....the ACCENT.....the SMILE.....
ut oh......the VAPORS.......
MerryMac 01-03-2006, 12:01 PM Well, my fellow Desmondites, I am very happy that TPTB will bring back Desmond. As for "24," well, a weekly double-dose of Ian is what we all need!! Yes, I agree with Ian being so charismatic. He has got it all. His best feature are those devastating eyes, milk-chocolate brown with such intensity that, if you look at them a bit too long, you will forget where you are, and get lost in them. Yes, he is a gift from above.

Desdemona_83 01-03-2006, 11:37 PM SEE? "Milk-chocolate-brown eyes"... Edible Desmond!
But seriously, though, I could just eat him up! :mushy: He's delicious! :D
Save The Humans 01-03-2006, 11:51 PM Intense eyes. When he looks your way, you know his full attention is on you!

Actually, their hazel green.
Miss Leslie & STH seems to have covered it all.
For me personally, Ian grabbed me with Desmond from the moment I first saw him talking to Jack in the stadium. I literally sat up, was lying down on the sofa, and said (out loud), "Hello? Who is that?" There is a sweetness and warmth to Desmond that just pulls us in. And then, when we met him in the hatch, I was all excited because now there was another side to him that I wanted to know more about. And then, in eppy 3 when we get to have real conversations with Desmond and hear his story and see how he ties in with Jack ... I was even more hooked. He has this multifaceted personality that is gentle while strong, trusting while cautious, curious while content, and sharing while guarded. He is just the most complex character that Lost has had to date and I want to know all about him!
But yes, I must admit I also LOVE how he looks. Since we usually see someone before we get to know them, we do make a lot of pre-judgments based on looks. But I will say this, I have never before been attracted to anyone that looks like Desmond/Ian in my life. This is a first for me. I am usually attracted to lighter hair, much lighter skin and green to blue eyes. Darker skin, brown hair and darker eyes have never appealed to me. So, I personally feel that when I fist "saw" him and was drawn in, I honestly feel that I "felt" something deeper from the character that melded with his looks and created a true and complete "person" to which I am attracted. His personality turned him into someone that I am attracted to. I am not saying that he isn't attractive, he is very handsome to me but while I can acknowledge good looks in men while not feeling an attraction to them, I am attracted to Desmond and do feel that Ian is a very, very handsome man (which, of course, makes Desmond very, very handsome).
And as a side note, I have the wonderful honor and pleasure of having gotten to know the actor since he first appeared on Lost and he is as kind and sweet as they come! I think, too, that Ian's own personality peeks out from behind Desmond's eyes. ;)

Oh, I ALWAYS go for the Desmond types. I'm attracted to any man of any color as long as I think he's got nice features, but I'm particularly susceptible to the charms of someone who looks exactly like Ian: Dark hair, dark eyes, medium skin (I don't know, I didn't think Desmond looked that dark). *THUD* Maybe because I've got blonde hair, blue eyes, and near-translucent skin! (Blame the Irish side of the family...) I did, as you say, find the character interesting before the face, but as soon as Episode 1 was over, I dashed to IMDB to find out the actor's name to find more pictures of him! And, well, the rest you know... ;)
And as a side note, I have the wonderful honor and pleasure of having gotten to know the actor since he first appeared on Lost and he is as kind and sweet as they come! I think, too, that Ian's own personality peeks out from behind Desmond's eyes. ;)
Absolutely! He's generous and humble. He answered my question the day after I posted it, and in Spanish to boot! He's just a lovely person, which is perhaps why he so easily portrays a lovely character!
Aaron C 01-04-2006, 04:40 PM Much love for Desmond. Flashback! Flashback! :)
Save The Humans 01-04-2006, 10:42 PM You are sooooo lucky, girls! I keep envisioning meeting HIC and we chat over coffee at my favorite coffeeshop. I can PICTURE this. Like Jane said, it's the attractiveness on the inside that makes a person attractive on the outside. HIC just seems like he'd be a great guy to get to know and become friends with.
This stands him apart from almost all other actors in the profession. It's funny, but I never really thought about actors as people until I started watching LOST. I can see myself pal-ing around with the likes of Foxy, Josh, Jorge, or Daniel. Yet HIC has affected me most of all. He's so clearly a unique PERSON. (And I liked Desmond from the moment he woke up at the beginning of Eppy 1 and started in on his daily routine! He didn't have to say a WORD!)
:clapping: for a fine actor and obviously nice person!

I thought he was Jack in flashback! Like '70s Jack in college or something... though he's to young to have been in college then. More like born in the 70s...

a70eezchild 01-05-2006, 07:53 AM Actually, their hazel green.
Ian's own personality peeks out from behind Desmond's eyes.
Yes they are.
I believe the opening shot in MosMof is his eye, tho have never posed that question.
It's a gorgeous eye...aye?!
I think his personality peeks out as well...from Desmondo and all his characters.
Acting must be a study in psychology...I believe to play the emotion you have to be able to "go there"...
or perhaps it is pure, raw talent...the emotion just flows without a lot of thought.
Hmm...will ponder some more.
Save The Humans 01-06-2006, 12:00 AM It is good to ponder on worthwhile things! :D
jbdean 02-19-2006, 04:34 AM How can Desmond NOT be popular? He's played by a consummate actor. The character is exciting and mysterious. His being in the bunker for 3 years is enough to make us want to know more ... that coupled with his having met Jack before. Of course, and not trying to trivialize anything, he's the best looking man on the show!
placerouge 02-19-2006, 05:26 AM I love Desmond and his crazy eyes...and I want more of him!

I just notice this stuff. People write Jorge and Terry, cuz they answer sometimes. But even after all this time, Desmond and William Mapother (Ethan) still draw regular postings. Of course, they answer from time to time, too!
lockeisthekey 02-22-2006, 03:52 PM For me personally, Ian grabbed me with Desmond from the moment I first saw him talking to Jack in the stadium. I literally sat up, was lying down on the sofa, and said (out loud), "Hello? Who is that?"
I had the exact same reaction. I kinda drooled too.
I was THRILLED to see him again in the bunker. I actually screamed, "IT'S DESMOND!" my mom was all, "WHO?" I then tried to rapidly explain that
Desmond was the "stadium guy" without missing anything.
I should point out the my mom lives with us. She's a fan, but not obsessed
with the show.
Desmond sent a thrill through me the first time I saw him, and it was doubled
the second time I saw him! I never get tired of rewatching those eps.
Jack and Desmond have a CONNECTION. I can't believe the writers won't
come back and explore it further. That would be just wrong.

I was so thrilled to find out that the man in the bunker was Desmond. And, to me, he looked even better with his hair long and in his face. I'm glad, tho, that they showed him with Jack first because otherwise we'd just think he was this intense and over the edge guy. Seeing him with Jack showed us his softer and kinder side. I like both sides.
I think the writers will touch on the connection he has with Jack. They wouldn't have written the stadium scene and the one where he takes off into the jungle but stops to find out about Sarah if they didn't recognize that connection. It's just a matter of when.

panarea 04-18-2006, 02:55 PM Just in case if anyone is interested in Desmond's popularity in my country:
There was a poll on our Lost forum (in Hungary). Who is your favourite season 2 character? And the result was:
1. Sawyer
2. Mr. Eko
3. DESMOND
4. Kate
5. Sayid
6. Hurley
7. Claire
8. Danielle Rousseau
9. Jin
10. Charlie
11. Sun
12. Michael
13. Locke
14. Libby
15. Jack
16. Ana Lucia
17. Walt
Yes, Desmond is on the podium! Great 3rd place! Good result from a charater who has been only in 3 eppys! :clapping:
Save The Humans 04-18-2006, 10:59 PM Bronze medal is GOOD, Panarea. Especially since Desmond was only on 3 eppys.
Though he's about to show up again in the Season 2 finale!
I'm glad to see that Eko ranks so high. He, along with Desmond, are two of the more fascinating characters to arrive on TV lately!
But Jack's in 15th place? Weird.
number_22 04-19-2006, 02:44 PM Remember that Desmond is on place 3 in the character boards post-count-rating (1. Locke, 2nd Sawyer) ! Not bad for a character that had maybe 20 minutes of screentime.
