In continuation of the philosopher theme on Lost, Boone's name could be a tip o' the hat to Thomas Carlysle, an influential British philosopher. Carlysle was an early existensialist whose work was an influence upon Nietzsche. Carlysle hated democracy, labling it "mob rule", and wrote a major work on heroes and hero worship. I found the following summary of his work:

He (the philosopher-narrarator) eventually finds that rage cannot provide a meaning for life, that he cannot answer the eternal question by merely rejecting all answers. He eventually comes to see that the matters of faith to common life can be valid, if they are informed by the soul's passions and the individual affirmation. He seeks a new world where religion has a new form, where the essential truths once revolutionary and undeniable are again made new.

This fits well with the Boone transformation begun in Hearts & Minds, and explains his discipleship to Locke...

Yes, but as someone said on the H&M board, it could also be a reference to Carlisle, KY, the last home of Daniel Boone.

Everyone wants to jump on the "Carlysle" wagon so quickly. So please explain to me where the "Boone" aspect of his name comes in to play!

I still stand by my theory that it stands for Daniel Boone, whose last home in Kentucky was in CARLISLE, KY. Daniel Boone was one of the first pioneers to KY.
