Does anyone remember how adimit Locke was about stopping and turning around? Maybe, Locke has ventured out that far and knew that something negative was going to happen or knew that they should not be going to that part of the island. anyone...anyone...

Most definitely Locke knew they were running into trouble. I don't know if he had ventured that far before, but he sensed trouble and knew it was time to turn back.

I mean basically they heard seven gun fire shots and found only three spent cartridges which were fired from michaels gun, i think Locke was the voice of reason wanting to turn around when he knew there was someone else in the jungle who had a gun and was shooting wildly
