View Full Version : Bernard is a dentist
carodeluxe 02-09-2006, 12:16 AM Clearly, there has to be some reason that Hurley said that. I'm guessing it's one of the following:
1) Dentist skills will come in handy at one point on the island. No idea how. After all, there's no candy on the island except those Apollo bars, so I doubt anyone will be getting cavities.
2) It was an inside joke to clear up the deleted scene with Claire and the pilot in which he tells her that his wife ran off with a computer programmer named Bernard.
3) One of the writers has a dentist named Bernard and promised him a shout-out in exchange for getting his teeth cleaned for free.
Any other ideas?
everybodyhateshugo 02-09-2006, 12:19 AM As far as # 2 - Wouldn't that go further in explaining why it was deleted? Writers change their minds. Pesky writers...you *children of unwed mothers* must never change your minds, don't you know the universe implodes everytime you do...there I said it...you are each personally responsible for the creation and simultaneous destruction of all existence. I hope you are happy with yourselves.
conwaym2003 02-09-2006, 12:22 AM Maybe he was just trying to make conversation, Sayid isn't the friendliest of the lostaways.
ZoeWashburne 02-09-2006, 12:30 AM Maybe he was just trying to make conversation, Sayid isn't the friendliest of the lostaways.
Yeah, especially now that Sayid is still grieving pretty intensely. But i think the fact that Bernard's profession was brought up wasn't for nothing. I'm not implying it's some huge plot point or anything, but I bet it will come up again. I would love to see a Rose and/or Bernard flashback episode.
NYDCYankee 02-09-2006, 12:37 AM Sayid is going to employ Bernard's dentistry skills to torture someone.
shootfire 02-09-2006, 12:39 AM Well, isn't it obvious? Has nobody read the Doctors and Missing Limbs thread? Clearly one of the losties is going to lose a tooth!
pacejunkie 02-09-2006, 12:42 AM I think a dentist will come in handy when Jin finds out what Charlie did to Sun and knocks all his teeth out!
myothercarisflight815 02-09-2006, 03:15 AM Rose saved a candy bar for her dentist husband? Ok. I can accept that.
Well, it'll be nice to have two doctors on the island. I can just see him needing to fix Sawyer's teeth sometime...
Wilson 02-09-2006, 04:04 AM I'm going along with the idea that he's going to have to repair something that Sayid will do. Teeth are a good place to inflict some pain.
Kalgon 02-09-2006, 07:04 AM Maybe he put in Ecko's brother's gold tooth.
EllsBells1960 02-09-2006, 07:06 AM It wasn't Eko's brother who had the gold tooth - it was the other war lord.
creatureinthejungle 02-09-2006, 07:06 AM Rose saved a candy bar for her dentist husband? Ok. I can accept that.
Did anyone else think it was even slightly weird that Bernard is a dentist, and yet Rose said he has a particularly sweet tooth?
carodeluxe 02-09-2006, 09:27 AM Did anyone else think it was even slightly weird that Bernard is a dentist, and yet Rose said he has a particularly sweet tooth?
Maybe that'll be Bernard's "dark side." He's a dentist who goes on candy binges once his patients leave.
LockeLove 02-09-2006, 09:30 AM This would be bad, but what if they used Bernard to torture someone in the future. Everyone hates the dentist and I would be divulging all my secrets if you threatened to do dental work without novacaine!
aaronsvendsen 02-09-2006, 09:34 AM I believe it's to explain why Ana-Lucia has veneers. She got on the plane with funky looking teeth, and after crashing on the island had a picture perfect smile.. (recall her meeting with Jack at the airport bar)
Kalgon 02-09-2006, 09:40 AM It wasn't Eko's brother who had the gold tooth - it was the other war lord.
My bad. Kind of ruined the joke, huh?
Caravaggio 02-09-2006, 09:49 AM I'm not sure why Hurley said it. I think it was just to start conversation with Sayid. But is it coincidental that everyone has a skill to offer? doctor, dentist (Bernard), hunter (Locke), fisherman(Jin), tech guy (Sayid), a tracker (Kate), police officer (gone nuts), agriculture expert (Sun), construction specialist (michael), musical artist (Charlie-for entertainment), a new addition - a priest (Mr Ecko)....and so on...they have everything they need to have their own perfect but corrupt society amongst themselves.
carodeluxe 02-09-2006, 10:11 AM This would be bad, but what if they used Bernard to torture someone in the future. Everyone hates the dentist and I would be divulging all my secrets if you threatened to do dental work without novacaine!
Yeah, like Marathon Man. Or Little Shop of Horrors. If Sayid enlists Bernard to help torture people, that'd kick butt.
Mr. Find 02-09-2006, 10:27 AM Yeah, like Marathon Man. Or Little Shop of Horrors. If Sayid enlists Bernard to help torture people, that'd kick butt.
Or original "The In-Laws" (well, minus the torture). Hurray for dentists!
Could there be a nutty CIA agent far behind?
ras1325 02-09-2006, 10:45 AM You guys act like dentists never eat candy.
BrownEyedGrrl 02-09-2006, 10:51 AM Maybe that'll be Bernard's "dark side." He's a dentist who goes on candy binges once his patients leave.
Omg!
everybodyhateshugo 02-09-2006, 11:00 AM You guys act like dentists never eat candy.
I've even seen smoking doctors....dun dun da.
quangtran 02-09-2006, 11:47 AM Great, now we have an explanation as to how Ana Lucia's teeth got straightened from this ( http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=469&pos=234) to this (http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=775&pos=431). Answer: free island dentistry!
Slopster53 02-09-2006, 11:56 AM Jeez you guys went to torture fast:biggrin: Calm down, this may never even come into play. I doubt anybody needs these skills, it's not hard to torture somebody, as Sayid can attest. If you have the rocks for it that is.
LostFANatic91 02-09-2006, 11:58 AM I think that Bernard could know Desmond. It's far out but didn't Desmond say "Everytime I go near there my fillings hurt"? So maybe Desmond went to Bernard
Lexxxxx 02-09-2006, 12:38 PM This would be bad, but what if they used Bernard to torture someone in the future. Everyone hates the dentist and I would be divulging all my secrets if you threatened to do dental work without novacaine!
OMG! "Marathon Man" - Dr. Szell! Scariest dentist ever!
wicket55 02-09-2006, 12:58 PM ok how about this - while Kate, Claire, Charlie, etc.. were taken by the Others and returned, they put in little transmitting tracking devices in their teeth- hence how the Others know so much, they figure it out and Bernard removes the teeth!! OR Dharma group put them in way before the plane crash, Bernard being the dentist and that's how they're all connected! No? Ok I'm stretching... :)
You forgot the most important part of Bernard: HE'S WHITE!! Bwahhahahahahahahahah!!
angs0008 02-09-2006, 03:42 PM I am absolutely thrilled that we now have a dentist on the island :) He at least can help out with some fraction of medical needs... he has to know how to do stiches and manage pain and understand the pharmacueticals that Jack has stocked up.
And besides, somebody's EVENTUALLY going to get a cavity.. A dentist will be handy
What was Rose's profession? I hope that we get to learn more about those two!

I heard that probably next season there will be a flashback of Rose and Bernard
I think those two have more to offer like the other Losties that TPTB aren't sharing yet!

That spoiler is pretty exciting...I hope that it's true and that TPTB don't go and change their minds about it or something!
I agree with these two having a lot more to offer -- they seem like they could almost be the "elders" of the group, who people go to for guidance and what-not. Especially since Locke has been going crazy... Bernard & Rose seem to be very level-headed and nice -- a great combination for doling out advice

That could be true but I wonder if they are as nice and *normal* as they seem. Usually nice and normal people turn out to have very dark pasts on this show! Again with my theory that Bernard put the transmitters in their teeth working with the Dharma people! hahahaha! (can u tell its getting to the end of the day at work?? haha)
kgosal 02-09-2006, 08:18 PM during the bonus features on the lost dvd abc wanted to make show that was related to castaway... i think i remember in that movie that tom hanks had a toothache. Maybe that's why they decided to bring in a dentist.
monsieurxander 02-09-2006, 08:48 PM I know this is a stretch but...
Bernard having a sweet tooth and also being a dentist could be a reference to novel White Teeth by Zadie Smith.
The novel mostly revolves around culture clashes, and focuses a lot on interracial relationships.
Hey, it could happen.
LostIslandBaby 02-09-2006, 09:11 PM A dentist may come in handy on the island. I mean, how do the castaways brush their teeth?

Something isn't right with this couple. If Bernard really is a dentist and has some kind of background in medical training... then why didn't he play a more integral part in traeting Sawyer's bullet wound when they were trekkin' across the island?
And earlier Rose tells Jack as they sit on the beach that she always keeps Bernard's wedding ring on her necklace when they fly cuz Bernard's fingers swell, yet in the flashback, Rose does not have the ring on her necklace when they are on the plane... FISHY!

My impression is that she was just holding it for him, and that she made the ring necklace after the plane crashed. I don't believe she was wearing it when Jack was resuscitating her.
mammamia 02-10-2006, 12:26 AM A dentist may come in handy on the island. I mean, how do the castaways brush their teeth?
yeah...and how do they SHAVE? These women are the most clean shaven stranded people ever! :ohwell:
<hr>
I've been reading here off an on...just became a LOST junkie after a marathon season 1 weekend....
I was going to suggest that the dentist would come in handy for inserting tracking devices into fillings...but does he have any tools? probably not...unless they mysteriously appear in the hatch...:D Maybe there is a revolving door somewhere in the hatch (ala the superbowl beer commericial...LOL!!) I can see a future episode of the losties worshipping the door that provides razors, laundry detergent, and dentistry supplies!
Wilson 02-10-2006, 02:23 AM Jeez you guys went to torture fast:biggrin: Calm down, this may never even come into play. I doubt anybody needs these skills, it's not hard to torture somebody, as Sayid can attest. If you have the rocks for it that is.
You're right; torture is the first thing that came to mind, even though I've never had anything but good experiences at the dentist. So here's my new thought: maybe Bernard will give everybody big gold grills, encrusted with precious gems they'll find at the 3rd Dharma station. I'm picturing Hurley, mostly.
Michelle Friday 02-10-2006, 02:39 AM Maybe Zeke gets a big bad toothache! and strikes a deal with Bernard to fix
his tooth in exchange for..... one of the abductees?
Bella 02-10-2006, 02:42 AM When did Hurley say this? I must've missed it.
woosa 02-10-2006, 02:53 AM I think a dentist will come in handy when Jin finds out what Charlie did to Sun and knocks all his teeth out!
LOL!!!!
Just because they did that a lot in "Oldboy" doesn't mean every Korean would resort to that kind of revenge... ;)

My husband is a dentist and he sure wouldn't know how to fix a bullet wound, especially with no medical supplies.
And, for the record, he loves candy as much as the next guy.

Hey great minds think alike! I said the same thing yesterday on this thread - but my thinking was about the tracking devices already in their teeth and Bernard removing them (possibly before boarding the plane? hm? hm?).
As for the shaving - in the Long Con when Sawyer went on his rant about his stuff being looted - he mentioned someone stealing his shaving cream. They probably still have supplies left from their luggage. Also the supplies in the hatch... That is probably why they introduced the hatch - not for the Dharma factor but who wants to watch a bunch of smelly hairy Lostaways? haha! (All hail the hatch!)
I still think Bernard and Rose have something they are hiding! Maybe if they show their flashback in S3 we'll find out!!!. BUt for now I'm having visions of Matthew Perry in the Whole Nine Yards...
RX8Lush 02-10-2006, 09:03 AM All I have to say is, I HOPE they don't bring teeth torture into this... is anyone else here an Alias fan? Our buddy JJ has used the "I'll pull your teeth out one by one" toture routine on Alias several times, and it KILLS me to watch every time (even the safe TV version of torture scenes). Bleh.
I hope JJ and his crew are more creative than that. : ) Eek!
Michaud 02-10-2006, 09:08 AM Maybe he was just trying to make conversation, Sayid isn't the friendliest of the lostaways.
Yeah, he is particularly cold for a Cockney :)

that's the first think i thought of! that asian dentist guy who ended up being a part of project Christmas or interrogating Nadia (one of the two).... UGH! I can't watch those scene's - gives me the heebeejeebee's! Maybe JJ had some bad dentist experiences as a kid and is reliving them as a form of therapy?

p.s. Love the Seinfeld reference in your siggie. Gotta be one of the best lines in TV
Cuter_than_kate 02-10-2006, 09:42 AM My husband is a dentist and he sure wouldn't know how to fix a bullet wound, especially with no medical supplies.
It just seems like Libby was the main person caring for Sawyer's wound. Wouldn't your husband/dentist know if the wound was infected and doesn't he have some type of medical background?

Nice to meet a fellow Seinfeld fan.
Enjoy the 'lage

wicket55 02-10-2006, 10:47 AM Well I can see Bernard being too squimish to torture anyone like Sayid would (ala Hurley passing out while Jack was pulling the hunk of metal out of the Marshal) but maybe he's one "those silent" types - the ones that seems quiet and passive in society but then go home to their basement fall out shelters and practice medieval dentistry on their pets... with Rose dressed up as his nurse?

Sorry for the creep out! I just can't see how Bernard's dentistry skills would fit into the islands rapport. Other than for assistance in torture w/ Sayid or pulling Zeke's inflamed tooth to further negiotations (both theories widely discussed here). And those are long shots...

I doubt Dharma needs anything from the Losties, including tooth pulling skills. Torture can be done by anybody, you don't need a dentist. Maybe it fits into the flashbacks, another lostie was treated by him or somebody in his office?
wicket55 02-10-2006, 11:17 AM I was thinking more along the lines of Jack is a doctor, Sayid is communications/radio expert, Sawyer, Locke, AnaL being the 'muscle', even Eko being a priest or Charlie with his music are helpful to the mental state of the island (some wanting to be healed spiritually some thru hey you everybody?) everyone has something to offer the group but a dentist....? I hate the dentist. I'd be call Smokey or the Others to take care of him asap! :)
So there definitely has to be something more to Bernard and to Rose... we just have to make that connection. Possibly with a little more info we will...

It's funny that they haven't had a flashback episode yet. I hope we get one this season. I tend not to trust people until I see a flashback. Yes, I'm looking at YOU Libby.

I've often thought of Rose as some kind of 'voice of reason' or guardian angel. She certainly seems to have some kind of (possible) 'foresight' gift. Remember that she felt that the sound of the monster was "familiar", and also that she was wary of the Hatch. She was also always sure that Bernard was alive, and I think that was much more than her not wanting to 'let Bernard go'.

Yeah she does seem to be a little calmer and kinder than alot of losties. It's almost like she's there to specifiaclly watch over them.

This is true - she is definitely a peaceful presence on the island - something I think they all need - especially Jack (now if she would help Charlie...). I couldn't sleep last night and ended up watching S1 again and I heard her say that it sounded familiar... hopefully they'll play that out in Rose and Bernard's flashback??
<hr>
You spoiler gives me hope Wicket. Where did you hear that? hmm i believe ask kristen on e!online or spoiler fix.. one of the two most definitely if not both.... My work is really dead right now can you tell? haha

Totally agree. During season 1 I felt that she was the female version of Locke perhaps, but that has changed recently for obvious reasons.
xforce11 02-10-2006, 12:12 PM They may not have much candy but fruit is full of sugar too. On a side note it will be neat to see Bernard & Rose's flashback next season.
pinkrose 02-10-2006, 12:22 PM When did Hurley say this? I must've missed it.
He said it when he brought the radio to Sayid.

I just thought of the fact that she may be related to Walt somehow since they both seem to have a "gift." I never thought of that before. Also I think the monster may have something to do with people's fears. The "familiar" sound was the sound of the plane right before it crashed. All of the "losties" would fear that sound.
As far as the dentist, my husband thinks it may be a joke inspired by the song that Hurley and Sayid hear on the radio by Glenn Miller. He was on a plane trip to Paris in 1944. The plane vanished and was never found.

huh? I know the song was Moonlight Serenade but I don't get the Glen Miller/Dentist connection... (perhaps i'm a little slow today which is entirely possible)

I don't think it's been addressed in an episode, but it's been discussed on the boards. I'm not sure where or when though.

As a side note: the whole Glenn Miller thing doesn't have to do with Bernard being a dentist. That was just another theory he had. He thinks the joke was actually inspired by comments people have made about Ana Lucia's teeth being nicer this season than last season. I got it mixed up. I had to ask him to clarify. I feel stupid.

AS for her teeth - earlier in this thread someone (I will go back and see who) posted pic's for before and after - it's pretty hard to miss the veneers. They are so careful about making sure everyone's hair is the same length, beards, Walt's aging doesn't look too obvious, etc... but someone's teeth going from looking like a broken fence to chicklets!? hmmm... ya think we may have noticed that?? So ya possibly they said he was a dentist as a joke about the veneers to us die hards who notice that kind of thing.

Great, now we have an explanation as to how Ana Lucia's teeth got straightened from this (http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=469&pos=234) to this (http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=775&pos=431). Answer: free island dentistry!
here are the before and after thanks quangtran!!

Shout out seems most likely. I'm convinced they are doing that more and more this year.

me too. like the scott/steve thing with AnaL. also! maybe they're trying to tell us we're a little *too* obsessed... hmm.... Naw I don't think so! haha! Although I find watching the show a lot more intense now - when I first started watching I was just watching an hour long drama - now I study every movement with dedicated thought and imagination... Makes Wednesday nights so much more intriguing! :D
WisconsinDad 02-10-2006, 01:24 PM I thought this was a strange comment by Hurley. Mostly by the fact that he said it as "Hey, Bernard has been holding out on us - He's a Dentist !"
Not sure what was to be implied by that, were they looking for another doctor at some point? Trying to figure out what the "Holding out on us" was stated.
I do like the comments about a Dentist being needed either to determine what is the most painful area in the mouth to go after, by Sayid, or to come to the rescue of someone that loses a tooth.
Interesting....maybe one of the Losties was a patient of his? Hmmm
Drake 02-10-2006, 01:41 PM Hurley is just an anti-dentite. :D
wicket55 02-10-2006, 01:59 PM :roflmao: LOL! hmm anyone have a shot of Hurley's teeth? or maybe he has a denti-festish? Hurley is just an anti-dentite. :D
DallasElizabeth 02-10-2006, 02:04 PM I'm not sure why Hurley said it.
I don't think it's coincidental at all. I think you're right on the money: we are learning, piece by piece, that the lostaways have all these specialties which could populate a new society (those words being used in this episode, "populate new society.")

but a dentist? you would think they could have used someone with a more benefical skill - engineer, architect (spl), etc. Novocaine would be fun tho ;)
Michaud 02-10-2006, 02:19 PM Interesting....maybe one of the Losties was a patient of his? Hmmm
You can almost bet on it. Either one of the Losties, or a relation of one of them.

Same thought here DA

don't you think they would have recognized him by now if they were a patient. could be a relative.
Locke Ness Monster 02-10-2006, 02:23 PM Clearly, there has to be some reason that Hurley said that.
Any other ideas?
it was just to show us that the losties are talikng to each other, "he picked up boones transmission"
sioux21 02-10-2006, 02:31 PM It just seems like Libby was the main person caring for Sawyer's wound. Wouldn't your husband/dentist know if the wound was infected and doesn't he have some type of medical background?
Yes, he would know it was infected. He can certainly spot infection. I just don't think there would be much he could do to help.
augita 02-10-2006, 03:12 PM I think Bernard and his wife are not what they seem. I think they have a tie different than the others to the island. They are by far the oldest. Maybe, he is not a dentist and part of the plot is that he will be exposed in the future as their roles with Darma come out.
Michaud 02-10-2006, 03:24 PM don't you think they would have recognized him by now if they were a patient. could be a relative.
True. Relative more likely, although I thought that Walt might be a possibility. I certainly think he and Rose have a 'power' in common

I definitely think Rose and Walt have more in common than has been let on so far. They definitely have a connection with their abilities - now are the good or bad. As Locke said in the beginning to Walk about backgammon - two sides, one is light and one is dark - who is who?

Impossible to tell. They're switching from week to week. Where does Locke fall? What about Charlie now? So much fun...

there must be an invisible middle of the board called the "Grey Area"... where I think most of the Losties are catagorized... (as known as WTF!? Make up your mind you're either good or bad!! haaha). VERY much fun! :D

It begs the question then, who did Sayid go to? his botom teeth were a mess in the pilot but now are lovely. There must be a clinic somewhere on the island. :D
