View Full Version : drinking water vs. bathing water
pacejunkie 02-15-2006, 11:26 PM Okay, is anyone else starting to get a little grossed out at all the standing water basins they have in the beach? And when people fill bottles they stick their dirty hands in it. Remember in Collision when Jack was filling his water bottle and the golf ball flew into the basin? He just fishes it out! Ugh!!
Sayid is washing himself with water from another basin in this episode. When he leaves, will anyone know its not for drinking? Do they know how fast bacteria grows in standing water? It's just disgusting to think of. It reminds me of that soap commerical that goes "you're not as clean as you think you are". When are people going to start coming down with typhoid from all this contaminated water?
echo_alias 02-15-2006, 11:30 PM I've been thinking about the water situation too. Hopefully they boil it or something before they drink it, although it doesn't seem like they do. Maybe they got some water purification tablets from the hatch?
pacejunkie 02-15-2006, 11:57 PM I'm thinking this is just rain water they've been catching to use for all purpose water. Otherwise, they have to trek it back to the caves where the fresh running water is. For convenience, they have these catchbasins. But standing water in tropical heat is a pretty dangerous thing and I don't see any signs to tell people which water is for drinking and which is for bathing.
lilybeanie 02-16-2006, 12:05 AM I'm more grossed out that everyone is walking around with someone else's blood on their hands. At least Jack washed his hands after picking up the bloody gauze. I guess if you're stranded on an island you have other things to worry about.
stircrazy 02-16-2006, 12:25 AM One thing I noticed was that Sayid's basin seemed to be off my itself. The way he was bathing himself in the fresh water so near the ocean, I came to the conclusion he was preparing for prayer. An interesting way to start the episode I thought.
Wilson 02-16-2006, 12:49 AM I'd drink Shannon's bathwater. Or Claire's for that matter.

I agree, I got this “oh gross” feeling when I saw that. And we’ve still seen them fill drinking bottles up from this water too. More than anything that is probably were the purported “sickness” comes from!

Ewwwwww!! :lol2:
Blue Coral 02-16-2006, 08:44 AM Ok people. I think sanitation is the last thing on everyone's mind right now. They are on an island with people who want to kill them, smoke monsters that come when it pleases and they have no way out. I think that realistically, fresh water is the last thing on their minds.

I think fresh water should be the first thing on their minds. Everyone needs to drink a half gallon of fresh water a day. They are much more likely to die from contaminated water than from the smoke monster, who so far hasn't killed anyone but the pilot.
I think all the men need to use the water for something other than just drinking. Like bathing. The women seem clean but the men look terrible. I also agree everyone with blood on their hands seems too unsanitary for a tropical island.

Ok, that's true. :ntworthy: Fresh water should be the first things on their mind. But my point is that they have lots of other things on their minds right now as well. It is gross that they are being unsanitary, but like I said, that's because they are going through a whole lot of hardships.
Tom Chaney 02-16-2006, 02:25 PM Kate took a shower in the hatch. Last night, Jack washed his hands using the faucet in the hatch sink. Gee... the hatch has nice clear running water. Just like at home. Wonder where it comes from and why isn't everyone using it?
pacejunkie 02-16-2006, 02:32 PM Good question as to where the water comes from. My guess is it's spring water, because Kate said the shower smelled like sulfur. A sulfur spring?
I'm getting grossed out knowing that the stains on Hurley's shirt will still be edible in 7 years

Hahahahaha, gross.

Absolutely the best laugh I've had on this board. Thanks!!
And Sayid's rinse-off made me wonder the same thing about the bathing vs. drinking water on the island. Gross. And those bottles they all drink from... I guess you make do with what you have the best way you can?
I'm hoping they shower in the hatch -- maybe when it's your shift at the computer, you also get shower privileges?

I wonder if that's also something Dharma would recommend you do with a partner?
Get in there Skate!
penumbra 02-17-2006, 10:19 AM I can't watch The Greater Good without getting completely grossed out when Locke wrings his bloody shirt out into what appears to be the same basin that they drink out of.. "Mmm! Tastes like Boone!"

You're right! I forgot about that one! Remember in ATBCHDI when Michael is getting ready to go search for Charlie and Claire, he and Hurley are filling their water bottles from the same water Locke later rinses his bloody shirt out in. Wouldn't it make more sense to fill the bottles from the running stream before it collects in the pool if you're going to use the pool to wash?
penumbra 02-17-2006, 10:29 AM Maybe that's why Walt gave him the stink-eye in that scene.. he wasn't thinking "You killed Boone and lied!" He was thinking "You bald moron, we have to DRINK that water."
Moonkin 02-17-2006, 11:52 AM I too was shocked by the bathing in the drinking water. But my friends laugh at me when I go ooga-booga at the ad where the woman is cleaning the kitchen with a piece of raw chicken. Mah!
It is interesting though, at first I thought it was just talk when "Zeke" said the Losties are still on the island because his team let them stay on the island. But really, all the Others would have to do is get around to the losties beach (maybe by a little boaty boat) and really contaminate their big ole bucket-o-everything-goes water and watch them whither.

I don't think they'd have to. Just like with everything else so far the losties are their own worst enemies and they're doing it to themselves.

It's funny you say that penumbra, because you just reminded me the original script from the Moth has a scene with Charlie and Jin that is very similar:
"Charlie sits at the pool's edge, splashes water on his face.
In Korean: JIN: Hey! You!
Charlie squints up to see JIN, looking down on him from the nook on which he and Sun have settled. SUN stops laying out their belongings to observe her husband shouting at Charlie.
JIN: That water is for drinking!
On CHARLIE, he waves, no idea what Jin's saying...
CHARLIE: Morning.
JIN, disgusted, shakes his head and returns to his wife."
Could almost be fan fiction, yeah? In fact it was a scene they never used. Good to know they're thinking the same thing we are.

I forgot about that. Gross.
