Lost__1 02-18-2006, 12:09 PM Hello,
I am also an educator at a high school. I have a few students who love Lost. I have one very quiet student who found out I was into Lost and began to talk with me every Thursday morning. So Lost helped me make a connection with a student....thanks Lost :)
JohnnyREB1977 02-18-2006, 02:55 PM Hey y'all,
I'm a sorta/kinda teacher I guess *lol*. I'm a certified substitute, though I've only been called once to sub for a high school class (loved it) and I volunteer my time once a week over at the local GED school (it's a satellite school for a technical college). I help the students there with their writing skills so they can pass that portion of the test. It's one of the more rewarding things I've done in my life.
kitten_kath 02-19-2006, 01:40 AM Teacher here too... but I teach the younger kids.
I am finding that a lot of the parents are into the show. I think one of them made a comment about needing to be home on Thursday Night to watch the new episodes and it kinda snowballed form there, LOL... apparently there are a lot from our school into it.
Kitten.
Can coming teachers join too??
In that case, here I am
notlost, justexploring 02-20-2006, 10:10 PM Hello! I am excited that so many people have dropped in! We take future teachers too! I too have a student who was pretty shy, really perk up and relate to me when she found out I watch Lost!
LostIslandBaby 03-21-2006, 05:14 PM I'm subbing right now too, but I'm almost done with my teacher ed program and hopefully will get a permanent position at an elementary for the new school term. I would like to teach second, third, or first grades, but I'll take middle school too:)
notlost, justexploring 03-21-2006, 11:35 PM I've taught everything except Kindergarten, and 12th grade. I love 2nd graders they think you are the coolest, smartest person on earth!
LostIslandBaby 03-22-2006, 05:47 PM I've taught everything except Kindergarten, and 12th grade. I love 2nd graders they think you are the coolest, smartest person on earth!
I know and I love their innocence! Well, they're not so innocent sometimes...but you know what I mean! Is the current grade your favorite for now?
notlost, justexploring 03-22-2006, 09:19 PM I've kind of had a unique experience teaching so many grades. I've always loved whatever it was I was teaching. I've taught freshman for the past three years now and really enjoy it. It is funny but there are a lot of similarities between primary students and highschool students. My freshmen stress about friendships just like the little kids worried about who was going to play with them. I really like that we can talk on a pretty deep and mature level.
I've also taught at the same private school for 11 years, so I also taught my freshman when they were in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grade -- depending on which class they had with me. It is a really wonderful experience to teach kids twice or in some cases three times, like that. I know them on a different level and they feel connected to me.
One of my freshman girls took up with a bad boy, and was lying to her parents about her relationship. I talked her one lunch and said that I was worried about her, but also that if she lies to her parents about her very first boyfriend, then they will have a hard time trusting her for the rest of her teenage years. Her boyfriend was furious and told her that I was wrong to get involved. But she told him, you don't understand. She's known me forever and she wants me to have a good life. I like being able to have that kind of a relationship with my students.
scarlos16 03-22-2006, 09:46 PM I teach 4th grade and amazingly enough a few of my kids watch LOST. I also had a kid who was hard to reach and now that he knows I watch LOST too we have a better connection.
notlost, justexploring 03-22-2006, 09:48 PM We've got a little club -- in my classes. We read Lord of the Flies earlier this year and those of us who watch Lost were constantally talking about the similarities. The rest of the class looked at us like we were crazy.
colleen in seoul 03-24-2006, 09:34 AM Great ship idea! I'd like to join. :)
I've been teaching ESL to Korean kindergarten and elementary kids in Seoul for a few years now (since 2001).
The past two years were the best -- I got to keep pretty much the same students for 2 years in the elementary program and I really really love those kids.
Unfortunately, I had to give them up last month. The Korean schoolyear ends in February, begins in March, and so a few weeks ago I was placed with totally new classes.
The good news is, I'm starting to like my new kindergarteners already. I've got lots of stories about them so far -- they've all got their little personalities!!! From the laughing girl who thinks everything is funny to the boy who stares me straight in the face and rambles on and on in Korean no matter how many times I tell him to speak English cuz I don't have a clue what he's saying. And then there's the boy who dances around the room and who says "Teacher pretty!" every day.
Oh yes, and there's the little boy whose English name is Don Bosco. (His mother chose it for him.) Since it's the beginning of the schoolyear, the kids wear nametags on their shirts. So when I give out a worksheet and tell the kids to write their names, Don Bosco looks at his nametag -- which from his point of view he sees upside-down since it's pinned to his shirt -- and then proceeds to write his name very nicely upside-down and backward on the worksheet. I'm not kidding.
Ahh, the amusements of teaching.
colleen in seoul, that's such a funny story! Kids are the cutest little things, aren't they?
I have to tell you... Some of you probably know that I'm Norwegian, so when I had my 5 week practice period in England the children were facinated (to say the least) about that. Two cute little boys in the class (they were 9) decided that they wanted to write a little something about Norway as a voluntary project. Then, the second day they were working on it, they came to their teacher and asked her: "How do you spell climaxes?" She was instantly flushed and asked them why they wanted to know that. "Because we're writing about the Norwegian climaxes..." After a little back and forth between them she soon figured out that the word they were looking for was climate and not climaxes...
The week after that they were working on adjectives and how to write descriptive sentences. Ex: One bright, sunny day...
One of the same two kids from the story above approaches the teacher.
He asks: "How do you spell erotic?"
"What?"
"How do you spell erotic?"
"In what context?"
"One hot, steamy, erotic night.."
"Where is it that it is a hot night?"
"On an island with palmtrees..."
"Ooooh... you mean exotic!"
"Yes...."
Needless to say that the teachers had a good laugh afterwards...
Majandra 03-28-2006, 08:25 PM Hi! *waves* I don't see myself as a teacher but I was told I am one. :| LOL!
I study English and American literature at university and tutor kids at a private school in English and German twice a week.
Does that make me a teacher and may I join?
>Sobek< 03-28-2006, 08:46 PM Dang, I wish my teachers were like you guys! I heard a teacher in my school has lost posters in his room hopefully ill have him next year...
Countrygirl 04-13-2006, 01:43 PM Hi NotLost and others. I just found your ship! I'm a teacher who is not teaching at the moment but has returned to school. I taught high school--public school for fourteen years, (I've taught all grades 7-12 in social studies), then moved to Colorado from Arkansas. I've been attending school the past couple of years getting another degree. When I taught school I was a HUGE fan of X Files, and when my students found that out, they were constantly talking about the show. I have to believe that the same would be true of Lost, were I in a classroom of teens right now. As it is one of my classmates loves Lost, so we talk about it every week too. That's nice because my husband could care less about Lost--I've really tried to get him into the show to no avail. (He'd rather watch science and history shows than fiction.) Anyway, I'd love to join.
notlost, justexploring 04-13-2006, 02:00 PM Welcome all! Sorry it took me so long, but if you look at Post #1 -- I've assigned everyone numbers!
butterfly172 04-15-2006, 06:20 PM I'm kind of a teacher...I'm a freshman education major in college....so I'm studying to be a teacher! And I am in an 8th grade classroom as a teacher's assistant two days a week for a couple hours. I'm studying to teach Spanish and ESL. :) The other day my cooperating teacher let me borrow a catalog and oh my goodness, I had a field day with that thing. I could easily have spent over $100! But of course, I can't afford nearly that much, but I think I am going to buy a few books from it. Hehe.
notlost, justexploring 04-15-2006, 07:10 PM Welcome, butterfly172. You are number 11. We accept all educators -- even those in training. Just wait! You won't believe how much of your own money you will spend on books, and other great teacher junk.
gaffa 05-28-2006, 11:09 AM may I?
Middle School Science, in other words...glutton for punishment
zentrxtr 08-13-2006, 03:03 PM I'd love to say hi to any other K-5 teachers out there, maybe exchange experiences, philosophies and tips on staying sane! Other than getting LOST of course!
Namaste to all!
notlost, justexploring 08-14-2006, 11:34 PM Well, it's back to school for those of us on traditional schedule. We had freshman orientation tonight. They looked like frightened deer. I love a new school year.
EdMuse 08-15-2006, 12:12 AM Well, well, well...
I just stumbled across this ship! Nice find! I'm an adjunct faculty member in music at a Massachusetts state college. I teach music appreciation, music theory, private voice, class voice, a little ear-training and I've got courses lined up in jazz and opera in the next couple of semesters (basically, I'm the goto guy-- they know I'll teach whatever they ask me to). I also teach private voice at a local performing arts school.
Not that I ever plan it out, but I don't think a semester has gone by in the last two years when I haven't mentioned Lost at least once in the classroom. Probably something about hidden symbolism, or dramatic tension or such the like. I used to use Alias as an example of dramatic tension in cliffhanger endings, but since Lost came around, it just seems to pervade the lecture. Last semester, a student came up to me after class and asked if I was on any of the boards dedicated to Lost (I wasn't, yet). Then he started emailing me, asking what I thought was going on in the show. Cool to make a connection like that. I often wonder if he's on the 'Lage, and if he is, if he's recognized me.

I'm quoting myself because I didn't know this thread was here! I thought I had started a "new" one, so I'm glad I got nudged in with an existing thread! I love teachers! We really are a unique crowd. None of my kids have mentioned LOST yet (only 8 years old), but certain adults at my public elementary school make sure we find each other on Thursday mornings! Actually, I think my niece watches a (lame) kid's version on Saturday morning.
Best wishes to everyone starting a new school year! I will definitely keep coming back here.
Namaste and good luck!

Really?? Wow! Want to give me voice training?? ;) Too bad I'm going to WA and not New England now when I'm going to the US... I really want to keep up my singing lessons... I did music last year as a part of a Norwegian teacher college degree. Have to say... I love music... I had one of the best conducting teachers around. Thomas Caplin... He's Swedish and a conducting genius! He has written a book.. I don't know its English title, but I know it's used in colleges and music institutes all over the world... Anyway.. Cool to hear that you're a teacher too.. had to be a reason why you're so nice;)

Let us know how it's going!I have one year left of a Norwegian teaching degree that will allow me to teach kids between 6 and 16. This year I'm going to do English... (American English obviously;) ) Teaching English as a Second Language...
Later I plan on doing a MA in language and culture arts, which will then allow me to teach on high school level (16-19).

I'll report back once I get there... going to meet another fuseleer first for 9 days so that should be fun  (shoutout to the wonderful LadybirdKate who is not only a great best friend but who also is opening up her home to me)
EdMuse 08-16-2006, 08:27 PM Myha--
I shot an email to my brother in Seattle. I seem to recall he and his wife having a friend who is involved with the opera out there, so I'll see if he can refer you to a voice teacher.
