View Full Version : What 'Lost' theories are YOU sick of?

Personally, every time I read the purgatory/they're-all-dead theory I want to throw my computer out the window.

Any computers are expensive and important to college-student-English-majors-who-must-type-many-papers, so I really don't want to be tempted any more ... ::)

I totally agree with you.....it's too easy an out to say they're all dead, or in purgatory...

ALIENS sick of hearing that the aliens are doing an experiment. Not as much as the ones above but tired of it.

Its all a dream...I mean, geez, I'm SURE the writers can come up with something more stable than that! Plus, there was already a show like that before. It was called Bob Newhart!

I'm also tired of space aliens theories. :-\

Big grand governmental conspiracy theories are not my favorite, either. These may be correct (or parts may be correct), but I'm still tired of them. If everyone on the island is connected, we have too many different nationalities for it to be *one* goverenment's conspiracy. For what it's worth....

Good ones so far! I'm sick of all of them!

How about: this is all in [fill in name]'s mind. usually "This is all in Jack's mind."

Or this is ALL based on [fill in the blank: The Stand, the Bible, Watership Down, Gilligan's Island, Survivor, Lord of the Flies, the Island of Dr. Moreau, ect.]

i'm sick of "French scientists did nuclear experiments so now the Island is weird"

I've got two.

1) "It's all a dream" - while the writers may have a brilliant way of brining this about, right now, to me it seems too much of a cheap trick.

2) This one has just started irking me: "The island fulfills a persons wishes, thoughts, dreams, deepest desires, etc." I'll by mild psychic abilities, I'll buy hallucination, Heck, I'll be willing to buy the idea that a giant experiment realigns brain wave patterns in a way that people are more able to work out their inner demons, but the "think it and it will come" idea just bothers me, and doesn't really add up, at least to me anyway.

All of the above, but most especially "they're in purgatory."* Every time I read* "I've figured it out, they're all in purgatory!" I feel like I'm in purgatory.

I second all of the above. So far the varying theories have left me feeling that I would be incredibly disappointed with the show if they turned out to be true. I still have faith that the writers will come up with something that will be interesting and provide me with an AHA--that makes sense moment :D.

I am sick of the they are all dead, yes it would make since, I really doubt the writers would go for something that easy and if they did they would work so it wouldnt end up being the largest theroy out there. I am just sick of them being dead.

How about: {fill in name of female character} is pregnant!
Or
All the women survivors are pregnant!
Or
The plane crashed because {so-and-so, or all the women} were pregnant!
Or
Kate had a child...(similar idea).

Though this one:
"2) This one has just started irking me: "The island fulfills a persons wishes, thoughts, dreams, deepest desires, etc." I'll by mild psychic abilities, I'll buy hallucination, Heck, I'll be willing to buy the idea that a giant experiment realigns brain wave patterns in a way that people are more able to work out their inner demons, but the "think it and it will come" idea just bothers me, and doesn't really add up, at least to me anyway."
Doesn't bother me because though it defies rational explanation, I don't know how else to explain the polar bear that attacked Walt last night looking exactly like the page in the comic as it was being burned.

It can't be ANY of these theories anyways, 'cause the writers are too smart to come up with something that we could figure out!

Purgatory. . . it's all in their mind. . .aliens. . .4 year time loop. . . I'm not so keen on any of them. Of course I have no better ideas as to what could be going on, but I'm hoping that's how it's supposed to be!

P.S. Nutmae. . . Thought you might be interested in knowing -- a Linguist buddy of mine wrote an article titled "The Death of the Apostrophe." I used what I identified as "Freshman Comp 101 Rules" to add apostrophes in the article. . . for the majority of college Freshman the apostrophe acts as a strange balance to the comma.

Poor poor apostrophe. It's never been more abused. Just down the street from me is a delightful little salon whose front door says "Walk In's Welcome." I've demanded my "welcome" but they remain confused. :lol2:

I dislike any theory that involves a lot of numbers. Not that I don't think they're valid, it's just everytime I come across a Wild Theory with numbers, my liberal-arts major brain hurts.

P.S. Welshmuse: I agree on the numbers thing. Generally when mathematical equations show up, any sense I once had abandons me.

I can't stand the alien theories. Other ones I can handle, (as long as new people aren't trying to pass them off as their own brilliant creations), but gosh darn if it ends up to involve aliens I'd shoot someone. :(

Also, I hate the hollow earth theory. It's awful :P

I am so, so sick of the purgatory /dream/it's not all real theories, and the theory that Walt has the power to make things in his imagination manifest. Especially the latter, even though it's start to look like it's right. I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE IT.

Actually, right now I'm about sick of everything.

I have 3
1) its a dream, this is a really long dream
2) its all in someones mind, ohhh so orginal
3) And the one that makes me cringe, they are apart of some experiment and being watched but don't know it I mean come on, the whole "truman show" (that 98 film with Jim Carrey) rip off is just wrong.
All of these are just to easy to use if the show goes down the tube (which i doubt) and I know the writers are way more creative then that. I mean come one they have created such a intriging story so far, they would not write a show like this without having some great ending.

All of them are annoying, at least the major ones. Purgatory, aliens, Jack's dream... JJ and the writers have gotta be MUCH more original than that, and even if one of those things was the original plan, they've probably changed it now anyway since it's what everyone thinks.

:roflmao:

I know, I don't buy this "everything happened because of Walt" stuff. If that were true, then the writers pretty much gave everything away in the middle of the first season. Not likely.

Another one that I'm getting especially sick of:

Nothing will happen to any of the female characters because there are too few of them.

DUDE! Don't any of these people know that there are 35 other Lostaways walking around in the background?

Yronimos

On the one hand, there are the irritating theories:

"Whoah! Hold on to your pants, I've figured it all out! They're in PURGATORY!" That theory has been picked on over and over again, and I hate pointing it out too, but yeah, that theory really sets my teeth on edge!

The "four year loop" theory is starting to get on my nerves quite a bit... maybe there's something to it (I doubt it, but it's not one of the less likely theories). It's just that all the looper messages and threads I've ever seen go on and ond until my brain gets numb. When those messages start getting 2, 3, or even 4 times longer than even some of my longest messages, I figure it's gone too far.

On the other hand, the theories that are reasonable and imaginative but mind-numbing because of the complexity and obvious attention to detail and research that went into them:

The otherwise excellent "Lemuria Theory" - they may be on to something (at least, it's one of the best theories I've seen, and even if they aren't onto what's really going on the "Lemurians" have the makings of a pretty good science fiction show anyway). But, I can't quite tell for sure how good the theory is - I haven't read it all the way through because the threads tend to be ponderously huge and intimidatingly dense!

On the gripping hand, there is my favorite theory: the infamous "Haunted See Monster" thread on the ABC board. It was almost certainly a hoax, but the replies to it taking it seriously and the humorous replies made it all completely priceless.

Yronimos, who has figured it all out!!!!

01-26-2005, 06:56 PM
You know, none of the theories mentioned above really bother me per se. As long as the person who writes it has put thought into it and can come up with a reasonable argument to support their thoughts then I am happy to read it. As far as I can see, it's a credit to the writers that the programme has made people think as much as they do about the various different theories. Occasionally you can learn new information from reading the same theory by a different author as everybody perceives things in slightly different ways.

What does bug me is the posts that just say 'they are all dead/in purgatory etc etc' and then has nothing to back their theory up

Yronimos
01-27-2005, 11:58 PM
Oh, I should add the one that irritates me the absolute most, it's sort of the anti-theory: "You people are reading too much into this: there's nothing going on... they're just stuck on an island. DUH!!!"

Not a theory- but I'm getting really irritated by all the newbies on the board who only post the obvious. Like jump in on an established thread only to say, "Me too." Or "I don't think Locke is evil either." I mean- can't you articulate your own freakin' thoughts? WTF?
