View Full Version : Held captive at the Black Rock?
greg_achen 03-09-2006, 03:35 AM "I had that weird dream again the one with the Black Rock I can't get away from. I tried to leave it but it won't let me." - Claire's Diary
Is it just me or did the writers' change the plans for where Claire was being held capitve? In episode 1.13 "Special", Charlie is reading through Claire's diary and stumbles upon the entry as stated word for word in the above quote. We already knew Claire had a prophetic dream at the start of "Raised By Another", so judging from established history, it seems that the writers' had every intention of implying that the particular diary entry as read by Charlie was yet another prophetic vision of hers i.e. that she was being held captive at the Black Rock. YET! We now know that Claire was being held captive in a medical hatch. So what's the deal?
So did Ethan first take Claire to the Black Rock to expose her to the illness? After all, that is where Danielle said her team first got infected. Or is the diary entry forshadowing something else in the future that is going to happen to Claire? Or have the writers' simply forgotten this little detail?
As much as I don't want to admit it, it's probably the last option. :frown:
We don't know yet what Claire meant by "black rock" - at the time, we didn't know that it was a ship. Claire may be referring to the ship, or she may be referring to an area of black rock.
As Claire is Australian, this phrase always makes me think of the book and film Picnic at Hanging Rock, where a group of children disappear (if memory serves me correctly).

Since Ethan abducted Claire on a path between the cave and the beach it’s possible that the path from the abduction point to the medical bunker went past the black rock but the path from the beach to the medical bunker did not. It’s also just possible that the writers decided not to utilize that part of their set for what ever reason.
elfdream 03-09-2006, 09:21 AM Thanks for bringing this up. I've thought about this but never got around to starting a thread about it.
Did the writers think we wouldn't notice or forget? Like we noticed the scratches on Ethan's face?
The only thing I can think of is something happened between the actual abduction and the time Claire woke up in the medical bunker.
lostgurl 03-09-2006, 12:44 PM Do we know if this diary was started before the crash or something that she started after the crash? Could she have had these dreams even before the crash?
I'm thinking something will happen in the future regarding the Black Rock and Claire's dream.
coupons 03-09-2006, 01:08 PM Just add more to the theory that Claire was under others control more than once.
CitrusGrin 03-09-2006, 03:17 PM As long as Claire is prophetic, who's to say she will not be held at the black rock
in a time still to come?
NathanBarl3y 03-09-2006, 08:40 PM Good point. However, i hate to start digging holes in lost but this reminds me too much of daniells distress signal. She keeps repeating, "it killed them, it killed them all" Was there possibly another outcome written for daniells team? Later on we learnt that she killed her own team. So why would she send out a distress signal stating something else did. One could claim it was to cover herself incase she did get rescued, can't look to good murdering your company. However, who could blame her if they were infact carriers of the "infection."
bo_is_lost 03-09-2006, 08:45 PM Show's not over yet. I'm sure the writers did not forget. I don;t think Ethan took her there to expose her to the sickness as several people went to the Black Rock in Season 1 and are not sick.
elfdream 03-09-2006, 08:50 PM It might be a future event. It will probably involve her missing again and Charlie remembering the line from her diary.

The particular diary entry that Charlie read happened after the crash, because we see Charlie reading in order and before he got to the Black Rock entry he read the part about himself. Therefore, it must have been a recent entry.
Danielle said the Black Rock was "where it all began, where my team got infected, where Montand lost his arm" Maybe Ethan's group were planning on taking Claire to the Black Rock after the vaccination series to test the vaccine by exposing her and the baby to the illness (if there is one), but she escaped before they could do that. But then again they were planning on killing her so maybe I'm totally wrong.
irish lost fan 03-09-2006, 09:17 PM I think the writers either changed their minds, or there is another plotline coming for Claire.
She didn't try to leave the medical bunker. Alex took her out of there. The medical bunker also had nothing to do with the black rock.
This made me think of something.
How do we know Danielle brought Claire back to camp the night she found her?
Danielle might have thought Claire could have been an other and brought her to the black rock to interrogate her. Claire might have wanted to go back to Ethan, hence " i tried to get away". Then when Danielle realised Claire wasnt an other she brought her back to camp.
Any thoughts?
NathanBarl3y 03-09-2006, 09:31 PM If danielle thought claire was an other why would she even help her at all? I really do think its just another little piece of lost that the writers have forgot about

I meant like when Claire first met Danielle in the jungle. Danielle covered her mouth then hit her. Danielle might have thought that she was an other trying to get back to the other others. Then she could have taken Claire into captivity until she found out Claire wasn't an other... Its just a theory i could be wrong
NathanBarl3y 03-09-2006, 09:50 PM Yeah she tried to cover claire's mouth to stop the others from finding her. However, when she realised that claire was dillusional (after scratching her), and would stop at nothing to get back to ethan she knew she would have to knock her out. She clearly knew claire wasn't an other from the start.
