View Full Version : Knowing the day of the week - Rose!
DallasElizabeth 03-23-2006, 01:50 AM Did anybody else find it curious that Rose knew exactly what day of the week it was in conversation with Bernard?
I know, I know - on a deserted island, people make notches in palm trees to keep track of time... but in this case, she just KNEW and responded so quickly.
Anybody?
shanzy288 03-23-2006, 02:09 AM I was really hoping that Bernard would find an oyster with a pearl in it. It seemed like there was no conclusion with that delema
Blue Coral 03-23-2006, 08:10 AM no, I didn't find it weird. she hasn't been completely stressed out, just sad, so I think it was easy for her to keep track. I know I would make it important for myself to know. If I didn't i'd feel lost on top of being lost.
Noeland 03-23-2006, 08:19 AM I found it curious as well. I know it's probably not somehting that will pay off on the show in the grand scheme, like so many things they have written in, but it gives you somehting to think on, and the show has been a bit short on those of late, so I enjoyed it. But, they seemed to be fighting, and personally that seemed odd.
wavenest 03-23-2006, 08:21 AM could have a watch with the day on it...pretty common!
omgimsolost 03-23-2006, 08:21 AM Perhaps it was just bad acting on her part.

Rose has been shown to be a very religious person. She probably keeps closer track of the days of the week than most of the castaways so she'll know which days are Sundays.
mbsieve 03-23-2006, 10:16 AM It probably helped that it was her birthday. That likely helped her in determining the exact day. If she kept notches or some sort of mental track she would definitely be able to retort on which day her actual birthday is...
Aversion 03-23-2006, 10:54 AM I have no idea why anyone would find this strange.

Me neither.
Except that the international date line is somewhere out in the Pacific, so she could be off by a day, if the island is not on the side her watch is set to. But that's nitpicking, so I'll stop.
le_stylo 03-23-2006, 11:02 AM She must be one of the others. Thats the only conclusion I can draw from this.
Honbun26 03-23-2006, 11:03 AM Couldn't it be as simple as Rose traveled with a date book or she found one in the wreckage.
Slopster53 03-23-2006, 11:04 AM Not hard, just remind yourself what day it is before you go to sleep and when you wake up, not that hard to keep track of. That and they probably found some way to keep track of time on the plane, datebook, calendar, infinite tarps. You know the basics.

Yes, that is the only answer, I saw her staring at a rock once, she must have been receiving a telepathic message from the others about what day it was.
costanza007 03-23-2006, 11:29 AM haha, i think its good that there is actually someone out there still acting "normal" with a bit of the outside world hanging on.
Slopster53 03-23-2006, 11:31 AM Yes, that is the only answer, I saw her staring at a rock once, she must have been receiving a telepathic message from the others about what day it was. You saw that too, I thought I was the only one!
lostgurl 03-23-2006, 11:35 AM Dont a lot of them have watches and don't some watches have the day of the week and the date on them?
Cuter_than_kate 03-23-2006, 11:42 AM The whispers told her.
superfuld 03-23-2006, 12:49 PM I found it incrediblly in charecter
123stefan 03-23-2006, 05:09 PM I found the Saturday and birthday reference strange.
Why? Just before Michael cut off the shakels for Jin and the arguments over the watch in season one, Michael said, "I don't know why you care about this watch so much! Time means nothing on this island!"
And now Rose's birthday debunks what Michael said becuase time is important...after all it was her birthday.
imn0tal0ser 03-23-2006, 05:40 PM i think we were just getting a glimpse into what makes Rose and Bernard tick, and the chemistry that keeps their marriage strong. even though i think Rose was being hard on Bernard, i think it might be because he's not as sensitive to their connection and it bothers Rose that he isn't more sensitive to it. Like when she knew that he was alive, but he didn't, and seemed like a broken man. she knew it was her birthday the same way she knew he was alive, the same way she knew what day of the week it is. i think Rose just gets annoyed with Bernard because he's less intuitive than she.
dcsipe 03-23-2006, 05:45 PM It's not like Rose was telling Bernard he was a worthless husband. I would say that he was getting a half joking argument from her on how he should have remembered. I think this is one of those things that Lost fans are getting waaay too nitpicky on details in the show.
Just think about what the argument would have been like if they never crashed on the island and were in normal life, and Bernard forgot her birthday. Their "argument" was nothing.

Minutes don't mean anything here, but days do, and also keep in mind when Michael said this they had not neem there as long.

I agree that it's oddly placed - maybe significant, maybe not. Rose does seem to keep track of the details, though (Bernard's ring, etc.). Bernard is completely a nervous wreck - perhaps the reason for his forgetfulness. The argument seems totally in character for both of them.
Maybe Rose is keeping track because she was told that she or Bernard only had X days / weeks to live?

I found it odd too, considering that there has been so little reference to time last season. Last season no one seem to have known the time, and the only person known to have a watch was Michael, ( which Micheal had taken from Jin). The watch that Michael obtain from Jin, didn't work. There was no other references to watches, or time, until the Lostaway open the hatch.

....I think Rose kept Bernards pocketwatch, but I'm not sure. Besides Michael, has there ever been anyone else on the island known to carry a watch? or any other reference to time, outside the hatch? I also notice that they never mention what month, or year it is. There was one mention of it being Claire's birthday, but I do not remember the date, or how old Claire is suppose to be.
lostie1 03-24-2006, 02:39 AM Guys are always forgetting their other half's birthdays and anniversaries. Maybe it has more significance but I thought it was just a Bernard making up an excuse for not making more of an effort to remember her birthday and Rose egging him. Also, could be Rose's way to keep Bernard from drifting away from reality, keeping him centered when they're so far from normal.

...or maybe, just maybe Bernard didn't forget it was Rose's birthday...maybe he just didn't know. I sure that most of your are aware of the theory floating around about the others, being Clones, or taking over other people lives. Suppose Bernard is a clone/other, and him forgetting Rose's birthday is a small hint of him not being the same. The French lady told Sayid that when her Crew return, they looked the same, but they we're different. Suppose bernard not remember it was Rose's birthday is a sign of that? Just a thought.
