Did anyone catch the writing goof where Locke's father tells him "If I don't see you again, Helen is dead" when giving him the mission to get the money from the safety box but then later at the motel asks him if his date at the funeral has a name?

For a show with such an attention to detail, seems like a pretty big goof to me.

He didn't threaten Locke. He said "If I don't see you again, I'll understand."

The best!

But I definitely heard him say I'll understand, nothing about Helen.

I agree with Delta, I heard the "I'll understand" line, not a threat against Helen.

I heard "Helen is dead" but on a 2nd viewing, it is "I'll understand"

Amazing how similar those sounded.

:24: Oh, my sides hurt! (Wipes tears from eyes) Thanks for a great belly laugh!

Oh, and he said, "I'll understand" - at least that was what was written on the captions.

Hmm, wonder if we have 2 versions of the same scene...

I agree, it sounded like Helen is dead to me too, but it wasn't. On second viewing, I heard a muffled I'll understand.
But I must say, on any other show, "If I don't hear from you, Helen is dead" would have made a lot more sense. After all, we're talkin' $700,000 here. But this wan't really about the money. It was a test of loyalty.

I think he definitely said "I'll understand." My husband thought he said "Helen is dead" the first time he saw it, but now he knows it was "I'll understand." That's interesting that other people heard it the same way. I thought it was just him.

No bong for me... :) I had the caption on, and when I heard him say "i'll understand" i glanced down to make sure that's what it said, and it did say "i'll understand." I paid attention to the caption because I didn't want to miss what he was saying! I was for sure that he would threaten Locke though, was surprised that he didnt!

Its weird because I thought I heard him say Helen too! I had to replay it over to see if he actually said that but the screencaps did say "I'll understand".

Oh, it was about the money. The guy is a manipulator. He could tell that Locke still wanted his approval or he wouldn't have gone to him in the first place. He used Locke again! He "understood" because he knew he could suck Locke in again and he was right. No need to threaten Helen.

Man oh Man ...

I have a hard enough time keeping up with the plots without having to interpret them through a smokey haze!

You all are cracking me up!!!

Hi, this is my first post, even though I've been reading them for over a year. I heard "or Helen is dead" too and I got really confused when he asked Locke if his date had a name. I even tried to argue with my sister over this. I thought it might be one of those HDTV things or maybe there were two versions out there and you saw one version depending on what part of the country you lived in. I really wanted to believe I was right. So, you aren't crazy, other people heard it too. I just wish I had taped it.

I just checked a few other Lost sites and people are having this same debate, complete with the drug references. I swear I was sober, I'm just too stubborn to admit I was wrong.

People, lets put this to rest. I and quite a few others distinctly heard "I'll understand". Some of us have had captions on and it read, "I'll understand". Enough said.

It wouldn't make any sense for him to mention someone he hasn't met yet and then later ask Locke what her name was. Also, wouldn't Locke have asked his father how he knew about her when the supposed threat was made?

I understand that it does somewhat sound alike, but it's obvious what was said. I see no point in continuing this discussion and to think that there's more to it.
