View Full Version : Helen discontinuity
Lost in Germany 03-30-2006, 08:17 AM Did anyone catch the writing goof where Locke's father tells him "If I don't see you again, Helen is dead" when giving him the mission to get the money from the safety box but then later at the motel asks him if his date at the funeral has a name?
For a show with such an attention to detail, seems like a pretty big goof to me.

He didn't threaten Locke. He said "If I don't see you again, I'll understand."
Blur2u 03-30-2006, 08:26 AM yeah, never heard him say that about Helen. I heard him say he would understand.
Put the bong down.

The best!
But I definitely heard him say I'll understand, nothing about Helen.
Baileysdad 03-30-2006, 09:11 AM I just watched it on TIVO and I heard him say Hellen too..I will have to rewatch it again...
Honbun26 03-30-2006, 09:20 AM I agree with Delta, I heard the "I'll understand" line, not a threat against Helen.
amathews99 03-30-2006, 09:56 AM I heard "I'll understand" too.

KyleSBeaver 03-30-2006, 10:03 AM I heard "Helen is dead" but on a 2nd viewing, it is "I'll understand"
Amazing how similar those sounded.
Lost_In_Louisiana 03-30-2006, 10:23 AM yeah, never heard him say that about Helen. I heard him say he would understand.
Put the bong down.
:24: Oh, my sides hurt! (Wipes tears from eyes) Thanks for a great belly laugh!
Oh, and he said, "I'll understand" - at least that was what was written on the captions.
Oggie 03-30-2006, 10:27 AM Hmm, wonder if we have 2 versions of the same scene...
CitrusGrin 03-30-2006, 10:28 AM Not to mention that later he asked Locke what her name was....
pdiddy 03-30-2006, 10:36 AM Definitely was "I’ll understand"
Mr.James 03-30-2006, 10:40 AM yeah, never heard him say that about Helen. I heard him say he would understand.
Put the bong down.
No, pass the bong over here. I heard "Helen" also.
MPmom 03-30-2006, 11:31 AM I agree, it sounded like Helen is dead to me too, but it wasn't. On second viewing, I heard a muffled I'll understand.
But I must say, on any other show, "If I don't hear from you, Helen is dead" would have made a lot more sense. After all, we're talkin' $700,000 here. But this wan't really about the money. It was a test of loyalty.
pinkrose 03-30-2006, 11:42 AM I think he definitely said "I'll understand." My husband thought he said "Helen is dead" the first time he saw it, but now he knows it was "I'll understand." That's interesting that other people heard it the same way. I thought it was just him.
aydans_mommy04 03-30-2006, 11:47 AM No bong for me... :) I had the caption on, and when I heard him say "i'll understand" i glanced down to make sure that's what it said, and it did say "i'll understand." I paid attention to the caption because I didn't want to miss what he was saying! I was for sure that he would threaten Locke though, was surprised that he didnt!
see kate run 03-30-2006, 12:23 PM Its weird because I thought I heard him say Helen too! I had to replay it over to see if he actually said that but the screencaps did say "I'll understand".
Robinhood56 03-30-2006, 12:35 PM I agree, it sounded like Helen is dead to me too, but it wasn't. On second viewing, I heard a muffled I'll understand.

Oh, it was about the money. The guy is a manipulator. He could tell that Locke still wanted his approval or he wouldn't have gone to him in the first place. He used Locke again! He "understood" because he knew he could suck Locke in again and he was right. No need to threaten Helen.
Navigatrix 03-30-2006, 02:39 PM Man oh Man ...
I have a hard enough time keeping up with the plots without having to interpret them through a smokey haze!
You all are cracking me up!!!

sunshinekitty1 03-31-2006, 09:26 PM Hi, this is my first post, even though I've been reading them for over a year. I heard "or Helen is dead" too and I got really confused when he asked Locke if his date had a name. I even tried to argue with my sister over this. I thought it might be one of those HDTV things or maybe there were two versions out there and you saw one version depending on what part of the country you lived in. I really wanted to believe I was right. So, you aren't crazy, other people heard it too. I just wish I had taped it.
i also heard "ill understand" but i can see how ppl would hear helen's dead.
RiverTheBald 03-31-2006, 11:09 PM yeah, never heard him say that about Helen. I heard him say he would understand.
Put the bong down.
He had the bong, was using the bong and listenin' to Jimi Hendrix singin' "Excuse me while I kiss this guy".

too funny :24:
sunshinekitty1 03-31-2006, 11:46 PM I just checked a few other Lost sites and people are having this same debate, complete with the drug references. I swear I was sober, I'm just too stubborn to admit I was wrong.
Lostage 04-01-2006, 10:51 PM People, lets put this to rest. I and quite a few others distinctly heard "I'll understand". Some of us have had captions on and it read, "I'll understand". Enough said.
It wouldn't make any sense for him to mention someone he hasn't met yet and then later ask Locke what her name was. Also, wouldn't Locke have asked his father how he knew about her when the supposed threat was made?
I understand that it does somewhat sound alike, but it's obvious what was said. I see no point in continuing this discussion and to think that there's more to it.

Ok... this thread had been dead for 23 hours before you posted in it though.
Just sayin.
