Okay, so I have been reading some of your theories and I realized something that makes me believe the lockdown procedure is for the food replenishing. So if what some of you say is true, and the lockdown is there so someone like henry gale can enter the swan facility while the 2 others are locked in the computer room. then henry can fill there food stocks. Now I was thinking, okay so they do this as not to contaminate the other two people. But then I was thinking, if this virus is so terible that they have to seal off the other 2 while someone re-stocks there food, wouldnt it make sense that the food, who this other has been in direct contact with would have a high possibility of being contaminated. I thought on this for awile, and then I realized something. When the facility locks down, those UV lights turned on..... I dont know if you all know this, but UV rays are very effecient for killing bacteria, viruses and mold. so this whole thing does make sense. I mean, why would they have UV lights come on, but only while the faclity is in lockdown.
here is an excerpt from a site that sells UV Sterilizers

Introducing: Ultra Violet Air Sterilizer, a product manufactured from state of art technology for sterilizing the air within the sterilization chamber. An ultraviolet ray is a band of light with short wavelength from 2000 to 2950 angstrom units possess the greatest germicidal effect of all ultraviolet wavelength, particularly the wavelength of 2537 angstrom units, it is extensively used to destroy airborne bacteria, virus, mould pores etc.

Just google it and you can find many sites that sell similar products.

Thats a really good theory, very believeable. We'll just have to wait and see how it pan's out.

The UV lights werent triggered by the lockdown though they were triggered by the numbers not being entered.

UV for sterilization makes sense to me. And the food drop was synchronized with the lockdown. But ...1) The drop was near Swan Station, not in the Others territory. Maybe the Others cannot tell the resupply people where to drop the food? Or it implies that the Others told the resupply people to drop a load near the Losties. That fits in with my theory that the Others need the names of the survivors in order to do a Google search and find out who is good and bad, then remove the good people.2) I've always been suspicious of Desmond. His pantry was FULL. How could he eat from it for 1-2 years and the pantry is still full ? It appears he is an Other, getting food drops and resupplying the pantry.3) Danielle has been on the island for 16 years and never saw a food drop ?4) Who drew the map on the door with invisible-in-normal-light paint? What happens if you shine ultraviolet light on Desmonds cave-wall paintings ? Are there other drawings on other walls ?5) Why drop the doors and sterilize the room ? Someone will just track in mud on their shoes and contaminate it again in an hour.
5) And how do I force this thing to STOP STRIPPING OUT MY CARRIAGE RETURNS ???

??? But if I am correct, the subjects never actually left the facility until there time was up. I dont think they were supposed to leave, meaning that once the facility was sealed and sterilized, no one would enter until the next food re-stock.

I agree, and want to add another idea.

On the map it says "activity minimal during lockdown and restocking procedures". I'm assuming this refers to Cerberus. This means 2 things to me.
1- Cerberus is less active during lockdown and restocking so the plane wouldn't be seen as a threat since "sightings coincide with emergency shutdown of intranet services and periods of heightened security".
2- The lockdown and restocking are linked- not coincidental. Why would they lockdown the Swan during restocking? Here's where June's theory comes in. For some reason restocking "contaminates" the area and the Swan must be sterilized by UV lights. Is it because an infected person makes the drop? Or could it be because something is emitted to desensitize Cerberus to the restocking procedure, which would be harmful to the people in the hatch? Something happens during that time to require a lockdown and sterilization.

I agree, the thing that doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me about it being Henry Gale, is that in lockdown, he seems genuinely scared when he hears the blast doors come down and then, he has the chance to leave once the blast doors open. So, in otherwords, even though Henry apeers to be someone else than he potrays to be, if he was an "other", he would have taken off. And so with that, it leaves me wondering who exactly would be replinishing there food stocks. When they first discover the hatch, it is filled with food. If this drop comes all the time, then can we speculate that someone knows (outside of everyone on the island) that there are people on the island. So if this is the case, there would have to be some sort of communication to the outside world. Meaning, if this is to be an on going project, there would need to be some way to communicate with the outside world in case some of the equipment fails. Is it possible that the Dharma Initiative is doing research on the island that if discovered by the common world would be destroyed for its either dangerous, or contraversial discoverys. Perhaps are the "others" making sure that the survivers of the flight are not making contact with the outside world and in doing so keeping the research undiscovered. Just thinking about the logic of all of this and the fact that the Dhama Initiative must have some sort of contact with the island, they are hiding something, they are willing to risk the lives of 48 survivers over. Meaning what they are hiding must not be discovered by anyone. And that possibly they just got 48 new test subjects and are not in the process of researching them........ wow i am very tired and out of it and have been bableing about stuff completely off the subject of what this thread was intended to be, but it as is connected in some way. Does any of that make sense to you.

The Gale imposter was sent to infiltrate Jack's group. If Sayid hadn't dug up the grave and found out the truth, the Gale imposter would probably have been accepted into the group. After all, he had helped Locke and didn't run off when he had the chance. If the Gale imposter had run off, then all of his scheming would have been for naught.

As far as contact with the outside world, I thought it was explicitly forbidden as per the Orientation video. Of course, that part was conveniently spliced out . I'm guessing the supply drop is a regularly-scheduled event. If there was outside contact/observation, they'd have sent Desmond a replacement partner immediately instead of having him man the Swan station by himself. I suppose one can argue they did "send" the Losties, but it was rather belated...

Oh yeah, maybe Kelvin died of UV exposure--maybe skin cancer. I guess he spent too much time working on the "map"... :frown:

I think they lockdown the people in the hatch in prior to food drop off in case they are outside. They don't want to kill their button pushers by dropping a ton of food on them. I think after the blast walls are raised, the button pushers themselves do the restocking.

I like it, but I am pretty sure at work we leave UV lights on for at least 30 minutes in order for it to be effective. I dont think the minute or so the UV lights were on in the hatch would kill anything at all.

And just as an aside, please keep this thread on topic, the discussion about font and typing etc is a bit lengthy. Thanks

Am I the only one who believes that the lockdown happens so the electromagnetic field is down, thus allowing the dropoff to happen? Let's face it, nothing seems to be able to fly over the island close enough, without crashing.

Arzt_go_BOOM

So, what exactly are they sterilizing? The food is just being dropped and (allegedly) nobody has left the hatch -- what exactly NEEDS to be sterilized? It would stand to reason that any sterilization process would have to occur AFTER the facility was restocked. Perhaps even as a part of the restocking process. It just seems a bit silly to sterilize a place that doesn't need to be sterilized, only to THEN bring in the supplies that are out in the elements and quite possibly contaminated.

Somebody please explain how these half concocted theories gain momentum.

Yes, you are. What makes you so certain that it can be shut down? Do they have a giant lead plate they slide over it to keep it from working? Every indication is that the island was chosen because of it's unique NATURAL electromagnetic qualities. How do you turn off nature, exactly? That would be like turning off a geyser or a volcano.

He Arzt- is it really necessary for you to be so hostile? Is it hurting anyone to offer up theories?

I'm not sure what science is available, but maybe the plane, or whatever is used to make the drop, has something aboard that counteracts the electromagnetic qualities of the island? And maybe whatever that is can be dangerous to the people in the hatch?

Honestly, offer up ideas- not criticism.

Well, if there is a sickness, then generally sicknesses are caused by bacteria or virii. UV light can kill both of these things. If they are trying to stay "clean" from the outside world, and have to take in things from the outside, it makes perfect sense to remove the bacteria/virii from the things brought in with UV lighting. So that is what might need to be sterilized. And there really is no need to bait other posters with comments such as your last one, not a good idea. If you have nothing to input into the conversation that either proves or disproves something about it, why bother responding at all?

I think that the food drop is what caused the lockdown-- not the lateness of Henry
in punching in the numbers. we don't even KNOW that Henry did punch in the
numbers. maybe he did something else- something that kelvin or desmond
used to do when they were in there, that must be done when the lockdown
occurs.

My personal theory was that John's letting the heiroglyphics stage occur awhile back
sent a message to someone that a food drop was needed.

However, upon further consideration, I've come to realize that my theory makes no
sense. Desmond obviously received food, but he thought that it would be a
major catastrophe to not push the button.

Do like this theory, since the big question mark in the middle is a huge EM field, as evidenced by Jack's key necklace floating in mid-air. It explains why the big ole slave ship was beached so far on land. But doesn't really explain the hot-air balloon. Maybe it was shot down, or that the EM field does weird things to navigational equipment.
