View Full Version : Desmond and the map
number_22 04-01-2006, 04:14 AM Javi said in a recent chat:
22:50] <truffula> Javi, I would just like to thank you for all the wonderful work you've done with LOST, and would like to ask a question about Dharma. Obviously we're all talking about the Map on the Blast door; what I'd like to know is who made it, and why? It seems VERY important
[22:51] <Javi> an outline for "lost" is 25 pages with dialogue! an outline for "the middleman" is a few cocktail napkins and a swizzle stick...
[22:51] <Javi> ...and an olive pit.
[22:51] <Javi> truffula - well, i can't tell you who drew the map because it will be revealed later... but it was soneone who had to push the button everfy 108 minutes, so his explorations of the island were limited and a lot of what he put in the map is conjecture....
[22:52] <Javi> ...he was clearly trying to figure out where the other hatches were and had not been told...
[22:52] <Javi> by the way, i am THRILLED by how much attention the map has gotten!
[22:53] <Javi> by the end of this season you will know exactly who drew the map, why and what happened to him - i guarandamnteeit!
And since there's a date on the map from june 2003, that basically confirms that DESMOND did indeed draw the map !
Save The Humans 04-01-2006, 05:55 AM [22:52] <Javi> by the way, i am THRILLED by how much attention the map has gotten!
Yeah, right. Like he wasn't EXPECTING we'd be all over it!
I believe that Desmond may have written the "I am here" beside the Swan station. But I think maybe someone else did the map as a whole. Kelvin, maybe? Or some predecessor who was told NOTHING about the 1985 catastrophe, or where the stations were? Zeke, as a red herring? Alex? (Well, no, ALEX may well know where everything is.)
Nonetheless, let's not rush to any conclusions.
On the other hand, I've often contended that Desmond wouldn't just watch the Orientation film and leave it at that. He'd ask Kelvin questions. And try to figure things out for himself. Every
. . .single. . .day! So maybe it WAS him.
Which means HE'LL BE BACK THIS SEASON.
LOST Granny 04-01-2006, 06:30 AM So, do Javi's comments confirm that just one person wrote the map? I've been thinking it was a joint effect by several folks, but the timing you indicated makes it clear in my mind that it was just Desmond and there does seem to be a lot of conjecture in the drawing.
It would also have to be done by someone who knows Latin or at least a few chice Latin quotes. Desmond appears to have been well educated...med school dropout, fan of good literature and great music!
number_22 04-01-2006, 06:33 AM Yeah, right. Like he wasn't EXPECTING we'd be all over it!

But at least we're sure Desmond knew of the map. He was there in 2003, so he must've at least known of its existence. Javi said the person who drew the map was alone, I deduct from that that Desmond must've done it.
The 1985 doesn't mean anything, Kelvin could've told him the Dharma Initiative backstory.
Since Desmond also knew how to fix a computer, he definitely has some kind of technical knowledge, which might explain the equations and the technical stuff on the map. If he was at med school he would've also picked up some latin and I mean these aren't really quotes he created himself, but things you would pick up in latin courses.
Furthermore, there's a name on the map: the pearl. Which in my opinion is Desmonds boat, it's to the right hand side of the octagon, which explains where he probably ran to.
If he drew the map it's also obvious that he wasn't part of the Dharma Initative and that he isn't one of the others.
Save The Humans 04-02-2006, 04:00 AM The 1985 doesn't mean anything,
**AHEM** Excuse me! Outside the LEFT border of the octagon are the words:
Caduceus Station believed to have been abandoned due to AH/MDG Incident of 1985.
It would appear that some situation involving Alvar Hanso (AH) and a DeGroot (M?DG) in 1985 was so severe, at least one station (and possibly more) was likely evacuated because of it.
If not the AH/MDG business, the writing continues,
OR possible catastrophic malfunction of Cerberus system.
Seems to me that 1985 was a pretty significant year for Dharma and the Island!

Sorry, you got me wrong, I didn't mean that 1985 was insignificant, but that it doesn't prove that Desmond didn't draw the map.
Save The Humans 04-02-2006, 06:00 AM Oh! Sorry about that, then! :D
That's definitely Desmond's "I AM HERE." I'm holding off on any further commitment regarding the map artist!
jbdean 04-05-2006, 05:02 PM Javi said in a recent chat:

No, not really. Desmond said he was down in the bunker for 3 years but we don't know when Kelvin died. Desmond never said Kelvin died 3 years ago. So, Kelvin may have drawn the map, Desmond may have ... OR someone before them may have drawn the map because Javi only said one person drew the map ... he didn't say only one person wrote on the map (and there are clearly at least 2 different kinds of handwriting on the map).
So, one person drew the map ... Desmond, Kelvin or pre-Desmond/Kelvin. And the person that wrote the 2003 date could have been Desmond or Kelvin (depending on just when Kelvin died).
Save The Humans 04-05-2006, 11:16 PM The map gave Desmond an idea of where to go when he left the bunker.
And "I AM HERE" is Desmond. I'm sticking to that.
Did you see xgirl's divvying up of the map into four quarters? Kewl job, that. And I got a readable whole map out of it!

He did say it was done by one person. If Kelvin did it, Desmond would've known of the map, so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to draw it on a blast door with magic ink. Furthermore, what do we know of Kelvin ? Nothing. I'm fairly certain that at this point in the season they don't bring in another new character. And remember, Damon and Carlton both hinted at Kelvin as not being a real person, or even a lie.

Hints don't equal facts. Just mess-with-mind remarks!
And even if one person did the map, it doesn't mean someone else didn't ADD to it! (I think "I AM HERE" is Desmond; the main map itself, I think is someone else.)

You need to spoiler font that because pod casts or articles (where I'm guessing it was) are spoilers. Actually, being honest, I'm bummed that I read that. :frown:
Save The Humans 04-07-2006, 02:35 AM Jane suggested that I edit this. So I did. The entire contents are gone. Nothing here to alarm mods or Admins, which I do not wish to do!
Have a nice day!
number_22 04-07-2006, 06:53 PM Well, looks like Desmond ain't coming back anytime soon. At least we won't get a Desmond episode this season. As to my best knowledge the episodes will be as follows:
2.20-Two for the Road-ANA
2.21-?-EKO
2.22-Three Minutes-MICHAEL
So if we get to see Desmond, then it'll probably for some secs in the finale, if we get to see him at all. Yeah, right like we needed another ANA episode, great work from TPTB....

Save The Humans 04-07-2006, 11:11 PM But we were never promised a Desmond-centric eppy this season, number_22! Just that Desmond would come back! None for the first three eppys were Desmond-centric, but there sure was a lot of Desmond in 'em! I think this might be the case now.
My guess is that several lostaways will go hunting for the ? bunker, and come upon Desmond along the way. He'll take them to whereever he's been hunkering down, and tell them what happened with him after he fled. Then he'll admit that He had an interest in going to that bunker, too, but he wasn't going to go there alone! Now, he won't have to--and he and they could spend the Finale finding it (and facing it) before we fade to black. . . .
It's a possibility. At least admit that!
mygoodeye 04-09-2006, 08:43 AM i think i'd be willing to lay a bet on that if anyone made the map alone it wouldve been Desmond. i did explain this in another thread but i'll be damned if i know which one:rolleyes:
*edit* score, my 500'threth post!

Maybe "Henry Gale" is Kelvin! That's why he did know the numbers...
Maybe HE draw the map...
Save The Humans 04-10-2006, 02:01 AM CONGRATULATIONS on your 500th post, mygoodeye!
Still say that THE MAP could've been drawn by one person, but the COMMENTS all over the map could've been added by other people--including Desmond.
But, who knows? This is LOST!! :wink3:

i just wanna know where the hell the map maker got UV pens from, and in several different colours.

This is exactly what I think, and have posted in another thread, but I'll be stranded on mystery island running from polar bears ans smoke monsters before I go looking for it again.

Actually the cartographer wouldn't need several different colored pens. One could use a variety of liquids to achieve the same effect. Such as bleach, laundry detergent, highlighter ink diluted in water, etc.
But if it has to be different colored pens, with DHARMA supplying theatrical glue, are Blacklight Pens really that far fetched?
Dino 23F 04-10-2006, 08:53 AM well maybe desmond will cut jack and kate out of the net this week
i really cant wait for desmond to come back, we need to come up with some answers from him.

Everyone on this board seconds that, passanger 23F!
Cute kitties in your avi, BTW!
number_22 04-11-2006, 05:01 PM Just got this reply from Gregg Nations, who is on the writers staff of Lost.
Sorry you're so frustrated, brother. But there are still episodes left to air, aren't there? How do you know for sure there isn't a Desmond episode coming up? How do you know the promises haven't been kept?
You just keep pushing the button and saving the world and it'll all be lovely, won't it, brother?
I asked him why there isn't a Desmond episode coming up.
Save The Humans 04-12-2006, 01:10 AM Well, there's not gonna be any Desmond eppy, and I'm not sure a definitive promise about there being one this season was ever made. But we had no Desmond eppy in the first three eppys of the season, but we had enough Desmond to make us fans for life! I hope something similar happens here: he shows up for the last 2-3 eppys. And STAYS into Season 3. And, best of all, they SIGN HIM UP as a regular!
I can dream, can't I?
jbdean 06-07-2006, 03:40 PM Well, from what we saw in LTDA, it didn't look like 1] Desmond helped with the map or 2] that he or Kelvin ever saw it! I guess they didn't even know about the black lights. So, that's got us back where we started with wondering what they were for (I mean, why they were there in the first place ... obviously not to see the map). And cudos to all those that thought liquid laundry soap was used as it glows under black light!

Wait a minute!
Isn't a map what Kelvin was working on?
On the blast door? Which is why they simulated lockdown with the wires?
And I thought he was using bleach to paint.
I must be way off.

I must be way off.yeah, they simulated the lockdown so Kelvin could paint on the map (with laundry soap) but Desmond didn't work on it and there were no black lights. Kelvin picked up where his old partner left off by "memory." Desmond asked him how he knew where to continue from and he told Desmond by memory. Watch it again (like you need an excuse!) and see that there are no black lights, Kelvin does it in the regular light and Desmond never touches it.

Ah, they never "saw" it because Kel didn't paint with a black light...gotcha!

jbdean 06-08-2006, 11:37 AM you chicks are kinda silly, do you think when desmond was alone for that month or so after kelvin died that he checked out the map. i think i would havePossibly ... but, if Kelvin knew about the black light, why the heck didn't he use it when adding to the map? Obviously he didn't know about it and if he didn't, chances are Desmond didn't either. Perhaps they were able to simulate the lockdown to a degree but they didn't get it to go as far as the black light coming on. My guess is because the computer never began to beep while they were in 'map mode.'
Also, I'm just basing this thread on what we were shown.
Dino 23F 06-08-2006, 11:56 AM i figured taht kelvin was kind of hiding it from desmond. thats why they never turned on the blacklights. but desmond id no dummy. why write it in detergant? because it can be seen with blacklight! if i was alone for a month i would try to figure out a way to see it.he had to know put 2 and 2 together
KGraham 06-08-2006, 12:04 PM I've said this before in a previous thread but I think that although they know how to hot-wire a lock-down, the black lights only come on when it's a proper lock-down - i.e. when the food is being dropped off. Think about it - the mechanism for the blast doors would not necessarily be on the same circuit as the mechanism for the lights...
100%

I met this Scottish TV presenter last week called Neil Oliver who really reminded me of Desmond - quite spooky with the resemblence and accent! I kept giggling whenever he spoke! You might want to check him out

And I tend to think that the black light was set to go off when either the computer began to beep or some other thing happened during a lockdown. But I'm sure Desmond "saw" the black lights as they're not hidden. But we have not been shown that he ever saw the map lit up nor added to it.

http://www.pfd.co.uk/clients/olivern/a-pre-image.htmlI do think the lights are connected to more than just the lockdown or else they would have come on the moment the blast doors came down.
Thanks for the link to that Scott's pix but he has nothing on either Desmond or Ian. But with the long hair and accent, I can see why you'd have to hold back a few giggles. ;)
