View Full Version : How many people actually read other people's posts?
My What 11-12-2004, 05:06 PM The question is generic and what I am really getting to here is that I think people tend to just read the person who posted the topics first question or statement and then writes there own opinion. This means allot of people are not reading what other people have responded to the main topic. I have seen to many times people asking one question and then some member responds and then another poster will ask the same question right after the member answered or gave his or her opinion. So this poll is only to let the members of the website know if you the reader is trying to read te main points of responses of the topic before you the reader respond. Thank you the reader for your time and feel free to chime in with a response to this. If you read my message. :lol2:
Sherry 11-12-2004, 05:14 PM Good question...I read all the posts for a thread that I'm responding to. I'm in and out fairly quickly so I actually don't read some threads at all. I probably miss out on some good discussions that way but it really does take alot of time to read everything. So I read the titles and if it sounds interesting I read it...and sometimes post.
diablita 11-12-2004, 05:19 PM I try to read or at least skim thru replies before I respond so I'm not just duplicating what someone just said... or answering or asking a question for the hundredth time...
If I have something new to add then I may agree with whomever and then add my 2 cents...
zia319 11-12-2004, 05:31 PM Is there a "depends on the thread" option? As Sherry already said, it's tough to read and reply to everything on the boards, so I'll see if any title catches my eye, or look for ones I've already posted in, and start with those... I try to read everyone's posts before replying - though I must admit sometimes posts get so long that I give up and decide to switch to another one without replying... and sometimes I simply don't reply because someone's already said what I wanted to say on whatever subject is being discussed or I simply don't have the time...
Speaker 11-12-2004, 05:45 PM I just post to read what I wrote and to see people tell me I'm brilliant! ;)
J/k....i try to read all the posts...if it gets to the point where I can't keep up then I dont' post to that thread becasue I don't feel like i can actively participate.
Empress 11-12-2004, 05:53 PM I try to read everything, but if Sherry posts something then I just get distracted by her avatar and all coherent thought is lost...* * :whistling2:
FoxFan 11-12-2004, 05:53 PM I can't post to a thread without reading every single word of the other postees . . . I really can't . . .the mysterious island god won't let me. *
No really, if I don't read the other posts I feel like I'm coming in on the middle of a conversation.
This does take lots of time, but I believe it is worth it . . . if only to read speaker's posts and respond that he is brilliant. j/k
Merry 11-12-2004, 06:01 PM I try to read every post of a thread but sometimes it's hard to follow a discussion that goes on several pages... so I may skip some posts sometimes
Karri 11-12-2004, 09:02 PM Being an admin = I read or at least scan ALL of the posts. It is getting hard though, loads and loads of posts now.
My What 11-13-2004, 03:10 AM Exactly, I hope every person understands what I mean is if you are going to post on the topic if you read before posting. Not just do you read every post. I think I am the only one who does this and replies. Speaker may do this as well though.
Goonies123 11-13-2004, 03:19 AM Most of the time I read the first one and the last one..then post..then I'll go back and read all of the rest. Counts right? ;)
Hiram 11-13-2004, 03:40 PM I read the first, then skim the rest because usually the rest are fairly short anyway.* Sometimes if there is a really long one
I will slow down and more carefully read that one.* Then I will post.* I hate to post then feel like an idiot when I realize
someone made the same point two pages earlier.
Now on the linear board that is more difficult because* two people can literally be typing basically the same thing then post
it and one of then will look like they were not reading the previous post becuase they come out at the same time.* Had that
happen to me today.
halfrek 11-13-2004, 04:15 PM good question, My What. i read every post and try to stay caught up for when the
writing/answering bug hits.
there is nothing more aggrevating than having people NOT read a post. :P
actually that should read annoying. ;)
i know it is hard to keep up sometimes. :P
on the Linear board...what i find annoying is when people obviously DONT
read my response to them. i spend a lot of time on some of my responses
and when they (the people to whom the post was addressed)
pass them by, it makes me wonder why i bother. ::)
katejones 11-13-2004, 05:11 PM I always read the whole thread before I respond. I actually read A LOT more than I reply. If I feel as I have nothing interesting or new to offer I just won't respond.
wolfdog 11-15-2004, 09:35 PM I read most of them so hopefully I won't ask a question already there, or answer one thats already been answered. I feel kinda silly when I do that.
cashmere lady 11-15-2004, 09:43 PM I read the whole thread. And it sometimes turns out someone has already said what I intended to.
It sounds though as almost everyone who has left a response here so far reads everything. Aren't we all just amazing? :)
Calico 11-15-2004, 09:43 PM I try and read a whole thread before I participate in it, unless it's a thread that's run through several topics since it started, then I usually just join in the one that's currently up. I'm more likely to miss a post when I'm going back to a thread for the fourth time than the first time I look at it.
Jesyca 11-15-2004, 10:09 PM I do! ;D
emaleythe 11-19-2004, 10:17 PM i do read the whole thread and then respond.
melanie 11-21-2004, 10:00 PM I read some. The ones that are related to a posting I may be responding to or ones that catch my eye as being interesting.
Tari Luinwe 11-21-2004, 10:37 PM I personally try to read the last page of post so I have some general idea of where the post are going. Then I take it from there.
pot_and_bombs 11-21-2004, 11:05 PM I usually won't reply to a short thread until I've read it through. If there are pages and pages on a particular topic I'll read the first several posts and then the last, to see what the thread is essentially about and whether or not it has wound itself down.
I tend to skim, but I have a pretty good idea about what I'm about to post before I do it. It's not really a question of speed or etiquette...mostly I'm just afraid of posting something really asinine in a public forum. <.<
pikameta 11-23-2004, 01:50 AM I read the whole thing, but what I notice most of us do is respond to the latest post... so if someone goes off on a tangent or brigns up another point, things can get pretty far from the original post...

rabgal 12-05-2004, 03:45 AM Well, we're a literate group that's for sure ;)
marbalbc 12-05-2004, 04:55 AM I don't read all threads, but when a topic catches my eye, I do read all the posts in that thread. If I have something new to add, I will post, but not before I know if I'm duplicating an answer.
Balanchine 12-05-2004, 10:29 AM I'll read the posted topic and the first few replies, then skip to the end and read that, then agonize about responding for a few hours. Then I'll put my 2 cents in and hit Post, then torture myself for being so stupid, rationalize it that no one will probably read my post anyway and if they do, they'll just hate me, then consider suicide, then realize no one will care or mourn, then try another post in another thread to make myself feel better only to go through the whole process again and, oh hell, why bother finishing this because no one will read it and if they do they'll hate me and-
pikameta 12-06-2004, 07:03 PM Bal- hee hee hee

Hiram 12-07-2004, 02:17 AM * Frankly, it depends on the Topic.* Some lend themselves to only having to read the most recent post.
* But, Shirley, and Frankly too,and don't call me Shirley, I think they make a nice couple and I am
* really looking forward to the nuptials during the first episode of Alias on Jan. 5, 2005 at 9:00PM EST.*
* Those two make such a romantic couple, but then again she is a chameleon!* I've said too much again haven't I?
*
* Must be time for my sleepy time meds, . . . oh Nurse, . . . *poof*
* *:santa:
Trueogre 12-07-2004, 11:48 AM I try and read other peoples posts as there is nothing more annoying that answering a question already answered. Or posing the same question that someone asked 2 posts before.
I'm guilty of doing that. But I try and read as many as I can before I post.
