View Full Version : Aloha to the Virginians!!!
aydans_mommy04 04-06-2006, 08:40 PM Hey all:) There wasn't a thread for all the people in Virginia! I have personally talked to a lot of you on other threads, but I just wanted to start one here for all of us:) Let's discuss where we are from, maybe we can all find a "it's-a-small-world" connection just like all of the Losties seem to have!!!
I'll go first I guess....
I am originally from the Shenandoah Valley (BEAUTIFUL)!!
Now I live in Northern VA with my hubby and son ( A totally different area)!
Ok.. I know you guys are out there.. so come on Virginians... lets chat!
Stefanie
HELLO to all the Virginian's.. I know you guys are out there! Where are you? Slacking on the Caves and Beaches board.. HELLO!!!! I am sad being the only Virginian here! Ok.. guess I'll have to wait for someone to reply! :(
elfdream 04-11-2006, 10:51 AM I'm a Virginian. I'm over here in the Shenandoah Valley near Winchester.
There was a thread like this here last year but it was mostly people from either the DC area or the Norfolk area. I don't know what happened to it or those people.
But hi! You're not the only one.
aydans_mommy04 04-11-2006, 11:14 AM Yay... I am from the Shenandoah Valley.. isn't it beautiful there? I loved it there and hope to be moving back soon:) Glad to meet another Virginian:) (we are the bomb:D)
beauty_is_truth 04-11-2006, 05:58 PM Woot! Virginia in the house...
I live in the capitol Richmond :) I go to college in the city and my parents live in a nice suburb LOL. I'm actually from New York originally but I have been living here for quite a while and I love both places.
I have visited the Shenandoah Valley and I love it! It's so beautiful.
This is such a great state... so physically beautiful and with such a rich history! Most of the founding fathers are from here, and there's so much to see. :)
Take me back to old Virginny... "thus always to tyrants"!
aydans_mommy04 04-18-2006, 09:50 PM My hubby doesn't like it here in Virginia.. but I think he is just partial to the state he grew up in.. which makes sense! He says.."people don't drink like this is WA...people don't talk like this in WA.. people are nicer in WA..." .... it gets on my nerves:) haha
Superman 04-19-2006, 05:04 PM NoVa represent!!! fear the mixing bowl... though they have improved it somewhat
aydans_mommy04 04-22-2006, 04:10 PM NoVa represent!!! fear the mixing bowl... though they have improved it somewhat
Where exactly do you live? I live in Northern Virginia.. but so many people refer to NoVa as their location.. but there are miles and miles and miles worth of cities that could be considered NoVa! Anyway... In the Shenandoah Valley there isn't much mixing going on there, but here in DC.. you better believe that there allllllllll walks of life! It is really interesting to see how much I have changed from moving from my small home town where 99% of the students at my school were white, to here where I am the minority! I love how I no longer notice the differences in people:) It's really great to see when everyone gets along, but this is DC... :D Hahahahaha....
Superman 04-23-2006, 12:43 AM i'm in alexandria near reagan national... just a stone-throws away from the pentagon and DC... oh how i love commuting on 395 in the mornings hehe... meh, at least i get to listen to DC101 longer than i would have if it were a shorter commute so that's something... yeah, that's the thing-- it's awesome when everyone gets along, but this IS DC lol
jumpingchoya 04-23-2006, 08:30 AM Hi everyone, I'm a native Virginian writing from Hunt Country.
...it's beautiful here, but I have a 1 hour commute to work, on a good day!
Lost Hokie 04-24-2006, 04:14 PM Hi! I'm a native Virginian - born in NOVA, but have lived in Atlanta for the past 7 years. My husband, baby girl and I are moving back at the end of this week! Can't wait to get back, Virginia is a beautiful state. Hi Choya. See you Wednesday.
jumpingchoya 04-24-2006, 07:32 PM Hey Hokie!
Can't wait to have you all back in Virginia. :p
aydans_mommy04 04-24-2006, 08:36 PM i'm in alexandria near reagan national... just a stone-throws away from the pentagon and DC... oh how i love commuting on 395 in the mornings hehe... meh, at least i get to listen to DC101 longer than i would have if it were a shorter commute so that's something... yeah, that's the thing-- it's awesome when everyone gets along, but this IS DC lol
My hubby works a stone throw away from the pentagon:) My hubby takes 395 too... and he hates it:) He ALSO listens to DC101 in the morning and I think that is the best of his day:) He comes home telling me what they said on the radio.. and how he couldn't believe it! It is pretty funny to hear him talk about it:)
Superman 04-25-2006, 08:47 PM well then, i'm sure the conversation you had with him about what Elliot and the rest of the crew had to say about Kenny Chesney and what he did in his tour bus must've been VERY interesting :lol2:
jumpingchoya 04-25-2006, 09:26 PM well then, i'm sure the conversation you had with him about what Elliot and the rest of the crew had to say about Kenny Chesney and what he did in his tour bus must've been VERY interesting :lol2:
I haven't heard Elliot lately, I'm still enamored with my iPod.
Maybe I should be listening...sounds like a good story. :eek2:
acp28 04-26-2006, 07:05 PM I can see Virginia from my porch, does that count? :) I'm in Georgetown, but Virginia is gorgeous.
aydans_mommy04 04-26-2006, 08:43 PM I can see Virginia from my porch, does that count? :) I'm in Georgetown, but Virginia is gorgeous.
Glancing at us from the other side of the river eh? It is beautiful in Georgtown! I have never been there.. but I have peered at it from my spot on the opposite side of the river.. and from what I could see.. it was GORGEOUS:)
Superman 04-26-2006, 09:22 PM I can see Virginia from my porch, does that count? :) I'm in Georgetown, but Virginia is gorgeous.
ha! that's alright, i can see DC from my balcony... in the fall when the trees have less leaves, i can see the capital building and about the top 1/3rd of the washington monument... oh and i can see planes take off and land at reagan too; we're just close enough to see it but far enough not to hear it hehe
acp28 04-28-2006, 11:51 AM ha! that's alright, i can see DC from my balcony... in the fall when the trees have less leaves, i can see the capital building and about the top 1/3rd of the washington monument... oh and i can see planes take off and land at reagan too; we're just close enough to see it but far enough not to hear it hehe
Ooh what a view! (Well, except for the planes). They rerouted all of the planes from Reagan over Georgetown after 9/11, so I see and hear pleeenntttty of planes each day!

It is pretty nice here, especially if you like shopping! It's quite dangerous for that, too! The bad part is that none of us ever really leave the area, because the rest of the city is a bit frightening. I do go to the malls in NoVa occasionally - you guys know how to do malls!
Superman 04-28-2006, 12:02 PM yep, NOVA does have some huge malls-- Potomac Mills and Tysons could be their own state
elfdream 04-28-2006, 12:09 PM They said that in the days before pollution you could go to the top of the Skyline Drive and see the Washington Monument. :D I don't know if that's true or not..
We used to go to Georgetown when I was in high school and just hang out. It was great...shops on the lower level, going through the beaded curtains to hear Joan Baez music playing in the background. :D
Winchester is getting so built up now that there is little need for us to cross the mountain to Tyson's Corner or Potomac Mills. We have just about all the stores and resturants that you all have now. The only reason we travel over there is when we have relatives/friends visiting who want to see DC and the surrounding areas.
The metro makes my husband sick btw..he would rather drive. Driving over there makes ME sick. :D
maryrovr 04-28-2006, 06:23 PM Hi all you Virginians!
My name is Mary and I am from Norfolk. The PowersThatBe always seem to lump all the cities in this area together and call us 'Tidewater'. But I love it no matter what they call it. I've been here (on and off) my whole life. Spent a lot of time in the 60's up in the DC area (we lived in Silver Spring) and I love it up there too. Some of us from my office just went to a conference up in Arlington last month, still too chilly for much sight seeing though.
aydans_mommy04 04-30-2006, 11:10 PM Hi all you Virginians!

I lived in Newport News when my hubby was in the military and I HATED IT!!!!! Growing up in the valley, going to a small university and then jumping to Newport News was HELL for me! I didn't like the noise... and the people weren't nice!! I would walk my son in my apartment complex and men would drive by and yell at the window at me.. and wave money at me! Hello... I am a mommy in sweat pants and a t-shirt pushing a stroller!! My sis goes to ODU and she loves it there! I think the campus is what she likes best though!! I guess the East Coast is a little too city life for me!:) I'd move back to the west coast any day if I could!
maryrovr 05-11-2006, 07:32 PM I can understand not liking Newport News. I live in Norfolk, near the downtown area and it's pretty nice, Greenwich Village kind of area. Lot of little shops and sidewalk cafes.
Did you just love the show ? I think that Jack is my favorite but it would be nice to meet some of the other folks since we seem to be losing some of the regulars.
aydans_mommy04 05-12-2006, 09:31 AM Newport News sucked.. but the area in Norfolk where you are from has always appealed to me:)
Man didn't it rain something horrible in VA yesterday? I think it was alllllll over VA for the most part anyway! We had tornado warnings and everything! I was out trying to get mom a mothers day present and got drinched:)
It's beautiful today though!!!!! :D
lost_in_DC 06-07-2006, 01:10 PM Aloha! I'm in DC (hence the name!) and I was going to post on the DC thread until I realised that there hasn't been a post by anyone who lives here in almost a year! So here I am. My son was born in Va so I hope that counts!
Happy Lost (rerun) Day!
aydans_mommy04 06-09-2006, 11:10 PM I consider DC part of Virginia.. wierd how people seperate it a lot of the times:)
maryrovr 06-12-2006, 11:59 AM Happy Damp Morning ! (raining like crazy)
Of course DC is part of us, and we are part of it!
Really though, I love DC, I lived in Silver Springs when I was in high school and we had great times cutting class and going into DC to the Smithsonian...what fun.
My sister and her husband live up there now.
Welcome LostinDC,sooo did you like the end of the season thriller?
Superman 06-12-2006, 12:40 PM i'll tell you one thing, i'd rather be looking at DC from afar instead of driving through there! hehe... how is it that RAIN of all things causes such a huge traffic backup?!
lost_in_DC 06-12-2006, 03:21 PM It definitely seems like rain sends everyone into a bit of a panic on the roads around here. The traffic is such a nightmare! I use Metro whenever possible otherwise I turn in to the queen of road rage  !!!!! I'm not far from the museums and have been taking advantage of life in our nation's capital. Hubby and I lived here a while back, moved away then came back again a year ago (he's a military man!) It's a bit different being here with a baby this time, not so many late nights in Adams Morgan, but that's probably a good thing :wink3: Hubby has relatives in your neck of the woods maryrovr, we've been there a couple of times, seems a nice area.
I loved the season finale. Just enough questions were answered for me -- I think answering too many questions too soon would spoil the show. And there's so much to ponder over the summer -- the fate of Locke, Eko and Desmond? What really happened to Charlie (didn't seem like himself to me)?? What's Jack's plan??? Four toed statue?!?!? S3 can't start soon enough!
aydans_mommy04 06-27-2006, 10:10 AM Anyone in DC get flooded out? :) It has rained soooo much here lately! Hubby came home yesterday in the morning! He busted through the front door and scared the crap of me! His work was closed due to flooding.. and the flooding knocked out the power! This is soo wierd for this area! The news said this is the most rain that they have had in a single month in 30 years! We got more rain in a few days than in one month? Thats crazy! Anyway.. I hope all of you are ok and not floating somewhere!!! I hope all your families are safe!
maryrovr 06-27-2006, 06:53 PM Hi!
I am with you ...this is too much rain! I can almost feel the mold growing in my house, ick!!
Have you been following the World Cup? I have only been able to catch some of the games on the fly between work and house work. I do love it though, started when my son was a little guy and played soccer. They're so cute...their little shin guards and stuff!
He's 19 now and still kicks the ball around but doesn't play on a team anymore.
I thought the England game was ok, too bad about Beckham. But, hey, his wife got in all the newspapers.
Time to head home from work, it's not raining at this moment!
elfdream 06-27-2006, 07:08 PM I"m over here in the Shenandoah Valley. I'm about ready to build an ark......
Joshypoo 07-23-2006, 11:08 AM I've decided I'm going to move out of South Florida by the end of the year - I just can't take this crappy state another second. I've been thinking about Virgina Beach - anyone from around there? Have any advice of areas to live, work, etc.
strwbrryflke86 07-23-2006, 05:35 PM I live in Texas now, but I used to live in Va Beach. I loved it and miss it every day! I lived about 20 min. away from the actual coast and that was far enough away to avoid any major hurricane damage. Other than the occasional hurricane, the weather is wonderful there. The beach area can get pretty congested with tourists during the summer, but it doesn't really seem to disturb life for the locals unless you live right on the beach. I lived in the Indian River/Kempsville area and loved the neighborhood, although I think the "recommended area" is Princess Anne. It's been about 6 years since I moved so I'm not sure how current my info is. As far as places to work, I lived in Va Beach during my high school years so working was the furthest thing from my mind (those were the days).

Great - thanks so much for the insight.
Trixired 07-30-2006, 01:44 PM Just wanted to drop in and say hello. I'm orginally from Detroit, but I now live in N VA. I've lived all over because of my time in the military...which is why I'm back in Va for my 3rd time. I usually hang out in the Experience forum but it's kind of slow today and I'm bored at work..haha.
Stay cool, and have a good day.
Superman 07-30-2006, 10:17 PM i'm quite surprised at the amount of fellow virginians there are on this board... noice, another NOVA person... welcome to the thread, Trixired!
elfdream 07-31-2006, 08:50 PM I always thought it interesting how they divided the state up like that. Some of the Shenandoah Valley is further north than most places in 'Nothern Virginia' but for some reason its referred to as "The Valley' and Northern Virginia...is 'Northern'.
boilerkappa 08-05-2006, 11:35 PM Hello! I just moved to Va 3 months ago from Indiana..........and I LOVE it. I live in Williamsburg.........it is so beautiful here and we have the best weather. So glad to be out of the midwest!!! I'm never leaving Virginia!!!!!!!!!
100%
I lived in Newport News when my hubby was in the military and I HATED IT!!!!! Growing up in the valley, going to a small university and then jumping to Newport News was HELL for me! I didn't like the noise... and the people weren't nice!!
I have only lived in Va for 3 months, but I totally agree with you......Newport News sucks! I live in Williamsburg and i have to go to Newport to go to the main mall and my son's specialist and some other things and i HATE that city. The people are totally rude, it's icky and I just plain don't like it, LOL............
sorry if that offends anyone from Newport News...........
100%
I've decided I'm going to move out of South Florida by the end of the year - I just can't take this crappy state another second. I've been thinking about Virgina Beach - anyone from around there? Have any advice of areas to live, work, etc.
We live in Williamsburg, Va and go to Virginia Beach almost every weekend (it's about 50 minutes away)..........I don't have any advice for you on where to live, however, because i just go to the touristy beachy parts..........i've heard there is good and bad.........high crime in some areas.......good luck on your move! We love it in Williamsburg.........been here 3 months.
maryrovr 08-07-2006, 11:40 AM Good Morning and Happy Monday Fusers
Is everybuddy holding their breath until the new season starts?
I can't wait! Also it will mean that it's fall and the weather will begin cooling off!
We actually went a whole weekend without rain here in the "Tidewater" area.
That's Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Newport News and Hampton.
For some reason the Weather Channel lumps us all together.
Maybe it will start to dry out now.
I love Northern Virginia, I have several friends that live up that way. And I love the
Western part of the state too. Face it kids...we have it all!!
elfdream 08-07-2006, 12:29 PM I have yet to visit Williamsburg. I know... Bad Virginian... :D
boilerkappa 08-07-2006, 07:48 PM I have yet to visit Williamsburg. I know... Bad Virginian... :D
naaaaaa...........your not a bad virginian.........;) It's lovely here in williamsburg........i think you would enjoy it............a lot to do in this area. I have not been to Busch Gardens yet and it is 5 minutes from me............I hear it is fun though.
I love Desmond and he loves me.

Superman 08-07-2006, 08:28 PM then you all should definitely go to the Beer school! it's in the Ireland-themed location... you get to try different kinds of beer and you can get your beer degree from learning about beer hehe

Oh, my husband would love that!!!!!!! Thanks for the info. Can't wait to check it out!!!
aydans_mommy04 08-08-2006, 10:25 AM Last time I was at Busch Gardens, which was last year, they no longer let you take tours of the brewery, which sucks because they used to give out free samples! I think they might have had issues with people getting drunk with kids around:D I am not 100% sure though! Busch Gardens is still my favorite place regardless of the beer, which is way to expensive if you buy a cup of it anyway!! Some people go to Kings Dominion a lot, but I'd rather got to Busch Gardens any day!!!! It is my favorite:D

elfdream 08-08-2006, 02:43 PM I've done King's Dominion but not for a while. It was raging hot the last time I was there.
Superman 08-08-2006, 02:59 PM Kings Dominion is pretty cool... haven't been there in a while though... lots of rides, can't remember if it had more than Busch... it's still Paramount's Kings Dominion, right? last time i went, they had a lot of Star Trek stuff-- people dressed in Klingon outfits
LostFan710 08-08-2006, 11:50 PM I've lived in VA twice.. Does that count for anything???

LostFan710 08-09-2006, 08:23 PM Sure it does. Which parts?
Manassa and Fredericksburg
boilerkappa 08-10-2006, 02:47 PM I passed through Friedricksburg on my move down here............seems like a nice city.............i've heard of Mannassas (sp?).........but i dont believe i have been there..........

boilerkappa 08-10-2006, 03:16 PM Oh, i have never heard of THAT one........LOL..........so then Mannassas is in Virginia? i'm not nuts? LOL
jumpingchoya 09-05-2006, 10:00 PM Manassas is in Virginia. There were two Civil War battles fought there - First and Second Manassas. Also where General "Stonewall" Jackson got his nickname....
If you are a Yankee, you may know those battles as First and Second Bull Run.
boilerkappa 09-07-2006, 08:04 PM cool, thanks for the info. There sure is a lot of history here in Virginia........

Where I live they changed hands 70 times during the Civil War. We joke that if we had lived there during that time we would have just sewn the two flags together and turned it around depending who was in town that week. :D
That's Winchester btw.

Bah Ha Ha!!! I've never heard that one...very funny!
boilerkappa 09-08-2006, 02:46 PM Did any of you have any damage from Ernesto? We have a roof leak and some wind damage (fence down, trees down) and we lost power for 2.5 hours..........sounds like we were among the lucky one's though. I have never been in a tropical storm before........I am from Indiana.........so this was a totally new experience for me...........not looking forward to a repeat any time soon, LOL..........
jumpingchoya 09-08-2006, 07:17 PM We didn't really. Just a few trees down. The rains in June caused more damage than Ernesto. Were you in VA for Isabelle? That was a little bit hairy...lots of wind.
jonahadkins 09-09-2006, 09:11 AM Greetings from Newport News - which is not popular amongst the Viginians here i take it.....it's really not that bad...if you can ignore the fact that every guy under 26 wears a knee length white t shirts.......the new City Center & Port Warwick are new and nice....and they are building a huge deal in Hampton soon.....
aydans_mommy04 09-09-2006, 09:46 AM Hey there JonahAdkins:D Nice to see another Virginian!! Ok.. I was the one who started talking about how much I hated it in Newport News... and I'm sorry:D Hubby was in the military and we were living near Fort Eustis.. and had a lot of unruley YOUNG people living around us!:D It was always crowded... SUPER CROWDED.. always loud... and traffic was horrible.. butttt.. I wrote that Newport News sucked before I moved up here in Nova... and.. well.. it sucks worse:D I am from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and have just come to realize that I am a country gal... I just am not meant for the city life!
About Ernesto... Well.. It rained for days and days and days and days! I didn't think it would ever stop raining! It rained from like Aug 29... till September 5th or 6th! We got more rain in the first 5 days of September than we did all of July and August. The wind knocked down some trees... and blew stuff over, but nothing that bad!! My part of Virginia was sooo dry and everything was dying, so I am thankful for the rain that Ernesto brought to us:D
I had gone to visit my parents, and my son always colors on the side walk with his sidewalk chalk! Well.. we hadnt been up for atleast a month, and as soon as we left last time it rained and washed all of my son's drawings off the sidewalk. My dad had mentioned that it hadn't rained since last time my son was over and drew on the sidewalk! Well.. wouldn't you know it, as soon as we left last time too.. it rained and washed away all of his chalk art! My mom is sad that we live too far away to visit EVERY DAY... and always enjoyed coming home from work and seeing his chalk art, but lately as soon as we leave.... (and just because my son colors on the sidewalk!!!) it pours down rain:D
Anyway to sum up...
Newport News.. Not so bad.. and I apologize...
Ernesto.. GREAT because we needed the rain:D
elfdream 09-09-2006, 09:49 AM I am from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and have just come to realize that I am a country gal... I just am not meant for the city life!
I understand that completely! I have lived in cities and I hated it! I don't mind driving to DC for special events like concerts (and when relatives visit they always have to go to DC! ) but since I have moved back to the country I don't think I could ever live in a 'big' city again.
aydans_mommy04 09-09-2006, 09:55 AM Where I grew up.. we lived right along the mountains... and driving from our little city out to our house was the most AWESOME sight EVER! You are driving up this road and you go up this little hill.... and peak over this knoll and you see the most gorgeous view of the mountains.. HUGE.. in front of you!!! It takes yoru breath away!!
Our backyard is nothing but mountains!! It is gorgeous!! Our house was built right on a piece of farm land that a farmer was developing. Anyway.. so when you look in our back yard as far as you can really see are fields... THEN MOUNTAINS. We see tons of wild life... (deer.. bear.. fox) It's awesome to sit out on our back porch with the binoculars and watch for wildlife! Birds chirping is pretty much all u can hear! :D

jonahadkins 09-09-2006, 06:29 PM most people in Newport News don't go up by Denbigh / Ft/ Eustis...the Oyster Point area is where the nice(r) parts are.....Shennandoah Valley eh? - i used to canoe and hike around there in high school - haven't done any of that in 10 years though....in middle school i went to band camp at Ferrum College...and Wintergreen is always fun......Ernesto brought some wind - and a lot of drainage back up around here - my job requires me to work at the cities emergency command center during any major tropical events - so i only hear about the bad stuff - i don't see much of the storm...
walkaway 09-10-2006, 07:19 PM Hi all...
First time poster. Been a lost fan since day 1, recently friends pointed me here and told me to join up. So, here I am. Figured i'd bounce in and see how many locals are into the show.
Anyways, I live in Richmond, VA. Doesn't seem to be many people in this area on here, but hey.. doesn't matter too much. Just saying what's up and that I look forward to chattin it up and theorizing on our upcoming season.

OA815LAX 10-25-2006, 04:19 PM Hi everybody,
I'm not a native Virginian, I'm actually from the UK (London to be exact) but I have been visting Va. for the past 14 years. It's a beautiful place and I try to visit at least twice a year. One of my best friends lives in Roanoke, but has family all over, and in my years of visiting I have covered most of the state.
One day when I am old and grey I'd love to be able to move away from the hustle and bustle of London and settle down somewhere quiet....near Smith Mountain Lake would be nice.
I cannot wait until my next visit!
Just though I pop by and say hello to all you guys and gals!
All the best from the UK
John

Bobby, I swear I have seen that car in person! It's like this vague memory in the back of my mind. Too weird! Anyway, I am in Virginia Beach. I'm originally from PA, but I've been here for the last 6 years or so.
Hoo_Crew18 wahoowa!!! I graduated from UVA in 2000... how are things in lovely C-ville? :D
Joshypoo, still moving to Va Beach??? It's a really big area; There are parts that are more rural and some that are much busier. Let me know if you have any specific questions!!!
1 hour to go until the new ep...
