We didn't see a body.

It would have decomposed. Even over a few months. What if the only thing in the grave that was really Henry Gale was his ID and the body was someone elses?

I have no clue why any of this would be. But the real Henry Gale lying with maggots in his eyes isn't as appealing plot wise. :)

Sayid said that there was a man in the grave. How would they have found him in there if he had decomposed? That makes no sense.

But did he say that because he found the ID or because he could tell? There's decomposing and then there's DECOMPOSING...

If you're dead for two months....(think about the bodies in the water, when Kate and Sawyer got the Halliburton case) I'm not so sure you'd be indentifiable as a particular person just by plain sight. But anyone with some experience with biology and anatomy can tell a man from a woman.
