Ok, I know that Charlie had a Virgin Mary statue, but I was under the impression that he had it for what was inside. Now he is building a church with Eko? Is this legit?

I don't know if you've watched the show from the beginning, but Charlie used to be a good Catholic boy. In his first flashback ep we see him in confession. In the 23rd Psalm he said he was an altar boy. Charlie lost his faith over the years when he gave in to sex, drugs and rock n' roll. Now he's trying to get it back and that's partly why he seems attached to Eko (becasue he said he was a priest).

The Mary statue represented his faith on the outside and Dom said in an interview that it was what made Charlie's dilemma interesting, because he would have to break what he believed in to get to the thing that could ultimately destroy him.

Pacejunkie is correct. Part of what makes Charlie's character so interesting to me is his ongoing struggle with the two sides of himself: the good Catholic guy, and the darker sex, drugs and rock and roll Charlie.

Charlie made a lot of bad choices in his life. Those choices have made it hard for him to forgive himself. Forgiving himself is what he needs to do in order to get back to who he really is --the person who was that altar boy that Pacejunkie mentioned. In fact one of the things he told Liam when he was talking Charlie into staying with the band was that he loved the band but it just wasn't who who was. Charlie lost himself to a life and lifestyle that deep down inside wasn't what he was all about. He is now trying to find himself again but until he can forgive himself for all his past mistakes he's always going to feel guilty and that guilt will weigh him down to the point that he can't be free to be the person that he really is underneath it all.

Of course it's legit. You saw it on the moving pictures box.

It's a great change of character. The island has cured him from this horrible life he was living... even if Claire doesn't believe him.

PJ and Michelle have it down.

I agree that until Charlie can forgive himself, he won't be able to change and get back to the person he used to be. I think he doesn't see that a lot of the reasons he is why he is, is purely b/c he's naive and doesn't know how to take care of himself....he'd follow someone he trusts off a bridge.....definitely a lamb. I don't think much of Charlie's problems are his fault, but he sure does damn himself.
