It seems like John might once again be following an old pattern of his- when some obssession of his fails, go to a new one. First things failed with his father, then he tried to move on to Helen but failed. Then after he got paralyzed, he was convinced the Walkabout would forfill his destiny, but that failed. He moved on and then decided opening the hatch was his destiny- then after that, it was pressing the button and "saving the world" All of those supposed destinies have not worked for him- so now he's moved on again and found a new destiny, cracking the mysteries of the map. Though things seemed to look up for Locke at the end, it's quite possible the map will become a new obssession/destiny by the end of the season that might not end well for him- or is this finally the quest that won't ultimatly let him down?

I like the obsession theory, but this one doesn't seem to be consuming her as much. He actually smiled while working on it. I can't wait until he gets the thing drawn.

Hmm since Locke is all about signs, I wonder if he sees the fact his leg i hurt as a sign from the island that he isn't doing the right thing (by concentrating on pushing the button) and that he needs to focus on the map. Just like he saw Boone as a sacrific to regain his legs.
