View Full Version : What is a "Dharmalar"?
grahamwell 04-13-2006, 06:48 PM In the first part of the episode, Rose presents Hurley with a box of 'Dharmalars'
You have to be quick to catch it.. screen shot here:

It looks like a carton of cigarettes. Whatever it is, it's clearly a sought-after delicacy but not suitable for someone on a fish and water diet (Hurley turned them down). Any idea what they are?
Also on that screenshot, apart from the ubiquitous code DI 9FFTR731, there are two other, smaller codes on the box, I don't think we're meant to fixate on them but they are rather more convincing as product and date codes.
IMNotA#4815162342 04-13-2006, 06:53 PM I think they are like Mallomars. Cookie base, marshmallow topping, all covered in chocolate.

CaKarst 04-13-2006, 06:53 PM I noticed this too.. Don't really have a clue what it is but it the name makes me think of a candy bar although they already have the Apollo Bars
Earendil 04-13-2006, 06:55 PM Like most of the Dharma products they probably just put their name in place of the product/type. I say they were Mallowmar bars that Dharma just added their name to.
Shardyk 04-13-2006, 06:56 PM Some guy named Lars got chopped up. :)
newfgirl 04-13-2006, 06:57 PM I agree Imnota#, I think they are supposed to be the Dharma version of Mallowmars.
MMMmm Dharmalaaaaarrrrrrsssss.
Marshmallowy goodness! ;)
lostgurl 04-13-2006, 06:58 PM I was trying to figure this out myself. I've never heard of Mallomars either. I'm completely lost on this one.
newfgirl 04-13-2006, 07:03 PM Mallomars have been around forever, but used to be a lot more popular. I think the older you are the more likely you are to have heard of them.
edit- Uh, I mean, uh what are mallomars???
Apparently they are also a NY thang.

IMNotA#4815162342 04-13-2006, 07:09 PM I never had them myself. I only have had to look up the reference before. :p So there!
I just had my first Moon Pie this last month, in fact. Yummy and it makes you nauseous. What more could you want?

BigRedCube 04-13-2006, 07:16 PM Mallowmars are known as "Mallow Puffs" in NZ....and "Tea cakes" in the UK
DarkTeach 04-13-2006, 09:49 PM Yeah, the generic brands/store brands are usually called "Marshmallow Puffs" here in the states... think graham cracker, huge puff of marshmallow, coated in dark chocolate... Mallomars... I love them!! Sort of like the "chocolate sandwich cookies" Sawyer had.. we all know they wanted "Oreos".. and like Oreos being "twisted".. Mallomars have to be eaten marshmallow bit first.. then the graham cracker bit.. never all of it together.. :-)
ANSWERis42 04-14-2006, 12:21 AM just wait soon enough we'll be seeing "dharma initiative" boxed food in the grocery stores. and all of us LOST nerds will eat it up (pun intended). then we will all know what a dharmalar is...
Mr. Find 04-14-2006, 01:29 AM I read somewhere that of all the US sales of mallomars something like way over half are from the New York metropolitan area. Since Rose is from New York, her holding a box of mallomars seems to make sense -- in that special Lost sort of way.
Portends a DHARMA-New York connection? Just a producer's homage to a favorite treat? Who knows?

bakerboys 04-14-2006, 05:56 AM As a native New Yorker I grew up eating Nabisco Mallowmars but after I moved to the SouthWest I found that while all the stores carry Nabisco products none carry Mallowmars. This is very much a regional thing - like Wise Potato Chips and YooHoo.
Marl64 04-14-2006, 08:46 AM Hmm,

We have something similar looking - Chocolate Tea Cakes

and and I found this Dharma Wheel Yin-yang Dish to put them in.

bakerboys 04-14-2006, 09:06 AM That's a lovely bowl, Marl64. :)
I work with a fellow from Ireland and I was just showing him the pictures you posted and he is quite familiar with tea cakes. The only differences we could find are Mallomars are dark chocolate with graham cracker base and Tea Cakes are Milk Chocolate with a biscuit/cookie base.

Interestingly enough ALL the products have the same code. As if they are all meant for the same location or "Project".

I feel for you being stuck without Wise potato chips (which are much better than Lays paper chips, folks). That is frightening!
NSchulman24 04-14-2006, 09:57 AM I wonder if Dharma brand products are better, worse, or the same as brand name? Personally, I find Mallowmars disgusting, however, this doesn't stop me from eating them. And if i saw Dharmalars i'd probably want to try one, and would probably hate it. Anyone ever hear Lewis Black's bit about candy corn? I'm the same way with Mallowmars...
imn0tal0ser 04-14-2006, 10:18 AM I think they are like Mallomars. Cookie base, marshmallow topping, all covered in chocolate.
ok buddy. you and me have to throw down. now!
no two names this similar can peacefully co-exist, so we have to fight to the death.
even though you're basically the only one to spell "Mallomar" right.
ETA: Mallomars are the stereotypical munchies food for stoned kids in the Northeast.
Noeland 04-14-2006, 10:19 AM Mallowmars are damn good. Dharmalars are probably melt resistant and taste a bit like wax! :) But for those on the island, probably like heaven! hahaha.

Mmmmm....Moon Pie and a RC (but I preferred mine with a Barq's)

I was thinking the same thing. I remember Mallowmars being a seasonal thing because they would melt in the summer. They were only sold in the winter months. I don't think they were sold at all in warmer climates.
Either Dharma scientists found a way for Mallowmars not to melt, or it's a clue to a coming climate change on the island. Didn't one of the Dharma projects have to do with climate/weather?
I just thought it odd that Dharmalars/Mallowmars would be on a tropical island.

Melt resistant mallomars! And Lars Hanso wants all the credit (notice they are not called "Dharmalvars") for this world changing discovery!
Question: Does the special magnetic properties of the Island have something to do with this "magic" food? Does the humming sound Sayeed and Jack heard from the hatch wall have something to do with their maufacture?
So many questions unaswered yet. No way, I am ever giving up on this show!
ihatetv 04-14-2006, 05:00 PM like most geo-centric NYers, we only find out later in life that what we take for granted is not available elsewhere. pity!
Mallomars! Who knew!
dollhouse 04-14-2006, 09:59 PM Does the humming sound Sayeed and Jack heard from the hatch wall have something to do with their maufacture?
No, that sound is the humming of magic elves who bake cookies in hollow trees. I know it's a different brand of cookie, but these elves have gone over to the dark side. ;)
Mr. Find 04-15-2006, 12:52 AM No, that sound is the humming of magic elves who bake cookies in hollow trees....
And this is why Eko marks certain trees to be protected. It is all starting to make sense now.

As a displaced NYer, I'm wondering if you can send me a box of Mallomars, Scooters Pies and a bottle of Fox's-U-Bet? Whadya say, IHateTV?
