I am finally a senior and am excited to be going to the Prom!

For those of you have attend past proms, what are some of your most memorable memories? What do you remember about the dance? What kind of dress did you wear? ETC

For those of you going in a month or so, what are you looking forward to? I really loved buying my dress! That was one of the most fun parts! I'm really looking forward to the dance!!!

My prom was in 2001. It was soo cool. The best memory was all the guys who asked me out. I wasn't expecting anyone to ask me, but everyday for a week, a different guy asked me. I had a blast with that, I felt all special. :blshing1:The guy I finally did choose was a friend who I had no idea liked me. My dress was a lavender halter top, the top had a cluster of diamond dust which faded as it went down the dress. The bottom puffed out a bit. My hair was in all curls that reached my waist. I was so hott.:5: I enjoyed my prom too much! I'd do it all over again. I hope you have fun on yours!

Just curious (as one whose prom was long ago in a galaxy far, far away) . . . according to news reports, you all are spending humongous sums on the prom and surrounding festivities. I would think that the proportion of students who don't go to the prom would just keep getting larger and larger as the dollars mount up. Do you find this to be the case? What proportion of students at your school does/did attend prom? If you skipped it, why was that? Do you think spending is getting out of hand?

i never went to my highschool prom. mainly cos i didnt have one :D but i did go to my university grad formal. now that prolly cant compare with a highschool prom.

my dress was black, halter neck, with a rhinestone clasp. it's very elegant. i love it. the whole formal was $75, but it was well worth it. fully catered, open bar, DJ, professional photographer, door prizes, etc. it was 8hrs long, which might have been too long if u were sober, but no one was. lol. anyways...im sure you'll have a blast at your prom! just enjoy it and have fun!!

lostmymarbles - ive heard the same reports, but i dont think its that big of a deal. yes, there are kids that go all out with respect to hair, makeup, nails, dresses, limos, etc. but i think you will find the majority of kids dont. of course, they do get nice dresses and their hair done. but its not as expensive as some of the kids that need the best everything. lol.

I definitely agree with you DM! There are more people doing this than in thr past, but it is not a widespread trend among the majority of teenagers!

I didn't have a dress. (I didn't see anything that says no guys allowed.) I went to three proms, all a blast in their own way.

Junior Prom - I went with Heather Evans, who was really cool. And I was almost Prom Prince.

Senior prom, my school - I changed my date like 8 times. Mostly between two girls and then at the last minute I decided to go with this girl who got major dumped by her date because I felt bad for her. I was supposed to play a song at the prom, but they were running over time, so I decided that my song for graduation would run over time. Very immature, but that was life.

I graduated in 1995, in Germany.

Senior prom, rival school - very fun. I got Stu Turkelson's teeth in my head while moshing.

What is it with guys and changing their date 50 million times?!?! I'm not trying to stereotype, but why does this happen more frequently with males than females? (Sorry. I'm just curious! )

Bo, your baby is adorable!

I went to proms every year of high school, but that wasn't uncommon as my school only had 500 people, and had two proms: one for 8th-10th graders, and one for 11th and 12th graders. 12th grade prom was the most fun - I got a red ballgown months ahead of time, and we went all out for the dance. I went to a prep school, so a bunch of us all got ready in a friend's room, and then my mother came to take pictures, and a lot of the faculty came out to watch us leave.

I went to two proms in high school and one with my girlfriend in my first year of college. I have no fond memories. Honestly, it's a waste of money. Just my bitter opinion, though...

Guys change dates because of some need to hunt and to conquer, as if we were still living in caves or something.

I forgot to mention I wore rainbow suspenders and danced like a maniac.

Well, I made a business decision for my prom (this was 1984 btw)...I was unpopular with the "in" girls...so I figured why put my head out to get hit, spend $50 on the ticket for a girl I would most likely never see again and $100 on the tux I would never wear again?

So, myself and my best friend (who I still see) went to play golf (which I still do) and had a blast.

All and all..a wise choice I think:)

Don't feel bad Baileysdad - mine was in the 80's too. I went with my then boyfriend Dane, we snuck in a bottle of Captain Morgan and hid it under the table - drank rum & cokes all night. I don't remember much about the prom - just that I wore a tasteful off the shoulder cream colored gown.

Ahh, proms. Mine was in the year 2000, as Conan would say, and "Waiting for tonight" was sadly on the playlist. It so wasn't a fun party song it'd cracked up to be.
Anyway, I was wearing a lovely silver dress and mad high heels that I still own and wear on most official occasions. I never saw my date again, I don't even remember his name. Martin, I think. Possibly. He was a good dancer though.
The thing I remember the most is that weird sight of my teachers drinking alcohol. And getting a bit sloshed. I so never wanted to see that.

Anyways, enjoy your prom. As the rites-of-passage experiences go, this one is one of the easiest and least stressful.

Let's hear it for the 80's proms! When guys could wear lavender suits and still look totally hot. ;)

For my junior prom, my date and I both wore all white and I must say, we looked goooood.

For my senior prom I decided to go with this fun, anti-establishment type dude. He accented his attire with very long hair and a silver earring I gave him (I wore the other one). We thought we were so punk but looking back on our prom pic all I can think about is how cute we looked!

My son is going to prom, he's in 10th grade and his high school has a Jr/Sr prom and his girlfriend is a Jr. The tux only cost 70 so that wasn't bad. I'm sure her dress was about 200.00 and I think each prom ticket was 60.00. Our town has a "prom walk" with an actual red carpet they have on the walkway into the high school. The whole town shows up (yeah a small town) and the big thing is show up in a cool car or limo or something different. I think my son wants to drive his HUGE 1992 conversion van, it's real tacky. Not sure how the girlfriend feels....guess we'll have to see! It's next weekend.

Long ago in a galaxy far, far away, I went to the prom. I was always kinda dorky . . . straight A's, loudmouthed, frizzy hair, glasses . . . so I didn't really expect to be the belle of the ball. I was just glad to be there. But I had a really lovely pink brocade dress that I got incredibly cheap (my mom always haunted the overstock shops) and I felt like a million dollars, and my date and I had a great time. The next morning, one of the moms who had chaperoned the prom called my mom just to tell her I was the prettiest girl there! Wasn't that sweet of her?

I have another story from another generation. My gorgeous niece, who has always been a freethinker, took TWO dates to her prom. Is that normal nowadays? She wanted to borrow my dad's big old honking Lincoln, and he said yes, but he didn't want anybody but her to drive it--so she took the car, washed it, and drove herself and her two guys to the prom! She ended up going to Smith--for those of you who know what that means--so she's more intimidating than ever. Especially now that she's gotten a Fulbright. And she's still gorgeous.

Well, being that I am friends with EarlhamGirl IRL, she knows this one, but imma tell it anyway.

My sophomore year of high school, I went with a senior, and at the end of the night, all of us decided to go bowling in our prom dresses and tuxedos, and we capped off the night by drinking way too much mountain dew and jumping off a very low bridge into some very deep COLD water.

the water is still cold in michigan in may

just so ya know.

ps. the fuselage does not, I'm sure, endorse bridge jumping or prom-dress bowling, for the record.

Oh.. Prom. How I loved thee. haha. I went to 4 in my hs career.. my fav being my junior year.
There's a huge prom tradition in my school thats been going on forever.. (at least before my parents time!) The friday before (ours is always on a sat) the juniors get to leave class at 12 to go decorate the middle school gym... and the theme is this huge secret. They block out the windows as well so the seniors cant sneak peaks while decorating happens. And you spend forever getting everything all ready.. some classes have been up all night before! Also, that friday used to be the day the yearbooks were given out to the seniors. So they got to do that whole.. sign my yearbook thing in the afternoon and ignore classes. Of course the theme of the yearbook is a huge secret as well... Back to the prom.. (well, the one I decorated).. The theme was Moonlight and Roses. It was this garden themed, rose filled thing. Personally, I thought it rocked. (I was one of hte heads of hte prom commitee)
I had such a blast at all my proms and love watching the videos every once in awhile.. they are hysterical.. the dance moves! (ok. I graduated in 99.. but still). Not to mention looking back at all hte couples and the dresses!

I'm not quite there yet. I'm only 14

But I just recently had my 8th grade dinner dance and my Mom said it was treated as if it was a prom! We had it at the Hilton...we had pictures, limo's...it was blown out of proportion. My dress cost about $170...and then my shoes were what...$50? I got my hair done by my aunt, who does hair professionally and then my makeup and nails were $35. It was a blast. My friends and I all got out of school early and got ready. I can't imagine how prom will be! And my 'date' was my best friend in my homeroom. We've known eachother since about 2nd grade so we decided the previous year that we'd go together.

My junior prom was HORRIBLE. Just horrible.

A guy friend invited me to go with him at the last second and I agreed. First, he was supposed to make reservations for dinner, and he ended up calling me the day of the prom to tell me he forgot to make reservations. The only place we could get into was Red Lobster and I had to make the reservations myself. He vincented about it all night.

Then we were supposed to meet at Red Lobster at a certain time and I told him before that I'd be getting ready at a friend's house. So I get to my friend's house to do make-up and get dressed, and after 15 minutes, the doorbell rings. And it's the guy. The only thing I had finished was my hair: no make-up, no dress or shoes or jewelry. His mom wants to take pictures RIGHT AWAY, so I just go pull on my dress in the hallway. I get his boutonniere and go outside to get pictures taken. He was already WEARING a boutonniere that his mother had purchased and pinned on his jacket. The boutonniere I had made for him was really expensive, with roses and orchids, and it wasn't even used.

Right after pictures, he tells me he wants to go right away so we could be "early". A friend was supposed to pick us up and drive us in their convertible, but the guy's mother made a big fuss and wouldn't allow it because it was a teen driver. So SHE drives us to Red Lobster.

We get to Red Lobster and take our seats. He vincentes and moans some more about the restaurant, and we order. Then he starts gabbing and gossiping, and then, my mouth full of alfredo, he drops a bomb: "I'm GAY," he tells me. He then proceeds to tell me the finer points of some guy's butt. Bombshell #2, he tells me he is in love with the guy I'm interested in and discusses his "tight ***Mod edited to remove creative spelling to get around the language filter***". I was sweet about it and non-chalant, but it was awkward because of how long I'd known this guy. And I honestly didn't care about his orientation; whatever cranks his boat. There is a time and place for everything, though, and it is NOT right before prom over dinner.

We finish eating, his mother picks us up, and takes us to the prom. We get in, he ditches me, and goes to dance with some other people. He was a horrid dancer, by the way...just think Night At The Roxbury or The Geek in Sixteen Candles. And that was the last I saw of him that night.

Although it was a dreadful night, I look back on it now and laugh: it was funny, almost movie worthy. I wouldn't exchange those experiences for anything.

Kudos to anyone who read all that! And I hope everyone has a better experience than I did.

First if all - Welcome to the 'lage, JessterRoux!

I guess you aren't aware of this yet since you just became a member today - this board uses a language filter/censor for questionable words (such as the one that shows up as "vincent..." in your post ;)), please don't use creative spelling to get around it. Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome, Starrox!

Yeah, I noticed all the "vincents" after posting and figured it was some sort of censor. Thanks for the explanation!

omg....JessterRoux....I read your whole experience! What a night!! I'm glad you can look back on it with such a great sense of humor. It would make a good movie, lol.

I went to prom my sophomore and senior years. We did prom weekend things. Six Flags one day, going canoeing down a river and having a picnic the next, in addition to the dance and dinner thing. I'm not sure I can top any of the stories here, lol. I guess mine are typical.

I actually had the most fun prom night my junior year when I didn't go. One of my best guy friends asked me to go, but I turned him down, hoping this other guy would ask me. He didn't. :frown: I do regret that, cuz he and I would've had a blast. But anyway. Everyone who decided not to go, or wasn't asked, etc. all went to the Dunes (beach off Lake Michigan) and hung out that night. It was an absolute blast!!!!!

It is funny. It's actually a story I enjoy telling.

My senior prom was better, though. I decided not to worry about having a proper date and went with a bunch of girlfriends.

I went to prom twice - as a Junior and Senior and had the time of my life. Both years I went with my best friends. It was a lot less stressful than having a date or group date - could dance with who ever I wanted was the key thing in this motive.

I have never paid over 100 dollars for a dress. When I was sophomore I was sure this guy I was kind of involved with was going to ask me to prom - found a gorgeous ivory dress. He never ended up asking me. I wore the dress to my junior prom - looked fabulous and rubbed it in his face. My senior year I borrowed a very expensive dress from a friend of my mom's luckily it fit perfectly.

Senior prom was probably the most memorable. It was the 23rd of April and in Michigan that basically means you can expect any weather. Prom evening arrives - all of my friends and I were in strapless and halter dresses. It was 32 degrees, snow blowing sideways...ugh. Thankfully we heard that there was going to be vale (sp?) parking to go along with the hollywood theme - we get to our location and it turns out that the parking plan vanished as it was "too cold" for our chaperone male teachers to assist the girls in strappy heels and bare shoulders.
