View Full Version : Can we please just call him Henry?
jbdean 04-21-2006, 01:11 AM I personally don't get why the need for all the cute little nicks Henry is getting because he's used a dead guy's name. Fenry, "Henry," "actor formerly known as Henry Gale," etc.
Even Henry told Locke to just call him Henry. Why do we need to identify him as a fake? I think we all know that when we say Henry, we mean the one that's alive.
Sorry if this upsets some but it bugs me that all this effort goes into making sure everyone knows we're talking about the Henry Gale impersonator when we have only seen a tiny I.D. pix of the real Henry Gale and therefore know that Henry is the man in the gun bunker, caught by Danielle, taken to the bunker by Sayid, beaten by Sayid, eaten cereal with Locke and Jack, helped Locke with the blast doors and drew the map to the balloon.
Michael Emerson is playing the role of Henry Gale.

You make a good point because everyone still calls James "Sawyer".
But people here like the cute nicknames... "Craphole Island", "Smokey Brainscan", "Mr. Clean". I guess we kinda have to because Sawyer started it.
Personally I like the name "Fenry", but your point is very valid.

First, I think it's just all in fun. My favorite is unHenry.

Um...because it's been established that he IS a fake. We DO all know that if someone says "Henry", that's who we're talking about (unless the thread is speaking of the dead guy), but why call him that? That's not his name. Until we know his name, we make something up. Again, fun. If it was revealed that his name was Clem, would you still call him Henry?

Um...no, he's not. It was assumed that he was, but that's not the character's name, as we all know now. If the credits still list him as Henry Gale, it's because TPTB don't want to reveal WHO he really is...again, if it was revealed that his name is Buster, I'm sure you'd begin seeing in the credits - "Michael Emerson as Buster".

Sure it's done in fun ... I can figure that out. ;)
But his name hasn't been revealed as "Clem." If it had, then it would be dumb to still call him Henry. That's a given.
But while he is listed in the credits as Henry Gale, that's who is he is.

Okay, I see your point, but I still say - we refer to characters as we know them...and while we thought he might be Henry Gale, I referred to him as such...now that I know he's not Henry Gale, I (personally) call him unHenry.
No biggie. Good to go back and forth on this, though. ;)
Remus Lupin 04-21-2006, 01:23 PM I'd rather if you didn't call him unHenry, because it pisses me off. Everytime I see Fenry or one of those super annoying nicknames, I feel like kicking someone in the head. This is the truth. Please stop that, just for my sake if nothing else!!
BOBBY 04-21-2006, 01:31 PM not-henry gale for me...like the new av jbdean its coooool

fenry *ducks*
the fire of remus lupins vengance will rain down on you all as he sings the song that ends the world
allinyourhead 04-22-2006, 11:22 PM The way I see it, he was the "first" Henry Gale, since we knew about him before RealHenry, and this is he name we know him best as, like, as someone else pointed out, Sawyer as opposed to James, or Hurley as opposed to Hugo.
I think the character more deserving of a nickname is the dead Henry. Maybe...
-RealHenry
-BlackHenry
-Anything else coming to mind.
rabia 04-22-2006, 11:26 PM call him mr x...
LostIslandBaby 04-22-2006, 11:56 PM I like what someone said about nicknames. We love to play around with them: a tradition Sawyer started:p So, there's been NotHenry, UnHenry, Fenry, FauxHenry, PseudoHenry, and etc....
I don't have a problem with people referring him as simply Henry Gale though.

See, that makes more sense to me because the dead Henry is the one we rarely speak of. But I do get what people are saying about nicks ... For me it's not like calling James Sawyer, because that's not a nick ... it's the name James gave himself and the name he has given everyone and it's a real name for James. Or Jack being something like Jack-o because that's just a nick that is a cute was of saying Jack, or Kate Freckles because that's a reference to a physical characteristic. I guess it just bugs me because these nicks are a way of making sure the reader understands we're talking about the man who pretended to be Henry Gale and we all know, when we call him simply Henry, that that is whom we're speaking of so I see no need for a nick in this case.
We all have our quirks. ;)
allinyourhead 04-23-2006, 12:51 AM As for another commentary on nicknames, both Sawyer and Henry named themselves after living people (Sawyer taking his name from the original Sawyer), and both have given these names for themselves to people they meet, although for different reasons
Maybe we'll find out other reasons Henry took the identity he did. Possibly even hating himself so much he rejected his former identity (similar to Sawyer taking Mr. Sawyer's name out of self loathing), or something like that.
Hoping next season they do a Henry flashback.

Now, I can only speak for myself, but me personally I don't call him Fenry for that purpose. Screw the reader.
I mean, Lost has a very intelligent fanbase (as evidenced by the Tiberius thread) so I'm sure that the reader would know who I was referring to if I just said "Henry".
I call him Fenry because I don't like the idea of calling him by the name that he used to deceive the Lostaways, that's all.
Someone legally changing their name is one thing, but if someone killed a guy and stole his identity and I knew it, I'm not calling him by the dead guy's name. It's kinda disrespectful to the one who died.

That would really be an intersting twist! I hope they'll do a back-story on Henry, too. He has to have something interesting to tell us prior to our meeting him. ;)

The problem with these nicknames is because they JUST ARE NOT FUNNY!! There is NOTHING funny about a name like "NotHenry".
If your names was Brian, but is nothing else, then everyone would start calling you "NotMike". As unfunny as that.
The jokes are lame, annoying and they tend to make me feel like breaking somebody's neck or slugging a person in the face. Sometimes I even feel like ripping paper or waving towels.
Diela 04-23-2006, 08:14 AM If a collection of pixels on a screen in the shape of "Fenry" makes you want to cause bodily harm to another person, then you have bigger problems than the use of a nickname. Go find the bully that gave you a nasty nickname in school and take it out on him, please, not us.
Calling him Fenry is just simply more accurate. If the character ends up dead later, then we're going to have a bunch of confusion. I type "So how did Henry die?" and you're not going to know if I'm talking about the guy buried under the balloon, or the fake one, unless we establish early who's who.
Frankly I have a problem with James continuing to use Sawyer too... what happens if the real Sawyer shows up later? I have no doubt that will come to pass. I can just see the discussion around the signal fire when that happens.
"So what are we going to do about Sawyer?"
"Which one?"

"Which one?"IF either of those scenarios come to pass, then I can agree with you but to call a character Fenry, UNHenry, NotHenry, etc. when a] the writers have given him a line that tells Locke to call him Henry and b] the actor is listed as playing the role of Henry Gale is just not needed now and is annoying to some (although I have no urge to rip paper or wave towels ;) ).

Why does this escalate your blood pressure? Calm down! It's really unhealthy (in more ways than one), don't you think? :no2:
Carencey 04-24-2006, 01:36 AM RemusLupin--Humor's a subjective thing. So you don't think it's funny, fine, others apparently do. But let's tone down the violent-like descriptions of how irritated you are...the point's been made.
