Ok I am kind of new at posting but I am wondering after watching Reckoning tonight if anyone knows why the water would smell like sulfer? When Kate is getting out of the shower Jack asks how is it and Kate says something along the lines of, fine but it,(the water) smells like sulfer. Sorry if this is nothing it is just that with all of the talk about water it struck me as a very odd thing to say.

My guess is that if the hot water comes from an underground geothermal source, it is quite common for it to have a high sulfer content.

Don't know how useful this is but traditionally and biblically Hell is said to smell like Sulfer.
And with all the talk of Hell on the Blast door map and then refocusing on the comment Kate made about the Shower I wondered if they was hinting.

Ciao

You're absoutely right about Hell and sulfur. You've heard the expression "Hellfire and brimstone?". Well, brimstone appears to be an ancient name for sulfur.

But I still think that the connection with sulfur has to do with underground hotsprings and not really burning in hell.

Completely agree. I don't think any references to 'hell' add any great weight to the overall LOST 'story'. Geez....then it'd be really stepping into the realms of sci-fi weirdness...LOL

I just think they luuuurve to tease

There's a volcano in the centre of the island, there are volcano rocks scattered around the place, my guess is that this is where the heat/power comes from.

Then again . . . when the water from my well (in Southeastern Mass.) initially comes out of the faucet, it has a distinct odor of sulphur. It goes away after a couple of seconds. We've had the water tested, and it's perfectly safe. It's just a natural occurance . . . not that I'm a hydrogeologist or anything!

sulphur is a very common occurance when tapping ground water. as noted this site is powerered by geothermal souces which means deep penetration for heat sources, such as the volcano we know is on the island and its not all the tough to tap into volcanic sources in the pcific rim where we know at least they are. as someone said, i have a well system also, and sulphur is very common to be detected. there are fitration systems but this site appears to have been abandonned for some time, hence the computers being so old

I visited Iceland a couple of years ago, and they have an abundant source of water and power due to their hotsprings. Yes, I said power. Pretty much everything in Iceland is terribly expensive, except for the water and power. So I think this is our power source that Dharma uses for the various bunkers ("hatches") around the island.

I actually visited a power plant in Iceland, and it was absolutely massive. To throw my own theory into this, the ? might be this geothermal power plant, given it's central location to provide power to the other bunkers.

interesting. at the beginning of the season, wasn't there a promo that said something about the losties not being the survivors they thought they were over frantic shots of, among other things, some sort of volcanic type something or other?

or am i imagining the volcanic part?

Someone else might've mentioned it already, but just in case they haven't, I wanted to point out that it is typical for well water, to have a smell of sulfur or other minerals from inside the earth.

It wasn't abandoned...Desmond was living there when the boys and Kate first went down the hatch, remember? Also, just like how the food was delivered, maybe that's how they got a new washer and dryer. If the old one broke then Desmond would have needed a new one.

Water pulled from higher water tables is often quite "soft." That is to say it contains soft minerals like sulfur which "rise to the top" geologicallyso to speak.

The Island likely has quite a high water table like most coastal regions (especially around South Georgia and South Carolina coasts) where you often have water with a high sulfur content, smells and tastes like sulfur and is strangely unable to quench one's thirst to any satisfactory level. . .
Not to mention the Volcanic nature of Southern Pacific Islands. Anyone ever drink the water in Hawaii, or Tahiti?

Water is in my family's businesses. And I've spent a bit of time in these kinds of regions.

The explanation is simple. Kate was relaxed after having a shower for the first time in weeks, and passed some gas. She was simply trying to explain away the smell to jack. ;)

Maybe Kate's sulfur water is like Claire's sour water in Maternity Leave. Personally, I think Claire's water was just drugged, but maybe there is a connection.

Anyone ever drink the water in Hawaii, or Tahiti?I stuck to the beer in both places.

I seem to remember a similar thread to this for the episode when that scene first aired. I think the conensus was that volcanic island + geothermal power plant meant the sulpher smell was a natural and expectable item for the hot water.

I think the important thing was Kate in a shower - not the sulpher smell

and the washer/dryer so new?

They were dropped by parachute recently. Desmond probably sent a message via the computer (not knowing about the missing piece of the movie) asking for replacements after the old ones broke down. In the next episode they'll stumble across the remains of the old 80s model washer and dryer.

My assumption was just that the island ground water has a high sulphur content. That tends to be naturally occuring, although, as someone else noted, it's very common in areas with Geothermic activity and hot springs. Hot springs Arkansas being an exception! (sorry, Grandma lives there... beautiful place) :).

Sulphur Atomic Number 16

Reading this article, it seems that sulphur happens around oil deposits. Drilling?
"impurities like arsenic which accompanied sulphur from pyrite" Don't drink the water.

I've been to several natural hot springs and it's common. I think they are trying to show that the island has a natural geothermal source of hot water, not necessarily just a hot water heater.

The simplist explanation for a sulfur smell in the water is that it is contaminiated with bacteria. Sulfur is a by product of bateria, they produce and release it into their environment. If the water supply or pipes is contaminated with bacteria, it has a smell of sulfur.

Herk
04-30-2006, 03:21 PM
Hey! medical man coming up with easy one (that no one else thought of). Here's a question...how can we confirm this? Would this bacteria be bad for your health? Should Jack be looking into this?

diabolo237
04-30-2006, 03:42 PM
I dont know if they could actually prove it without the proper testing equipment, dont know why it didnt occur to Jack. It seems to be more of a problem in rural areas than in big cities, so maybe its something Jack didnt make the connection with if he grew up in a city (which it seems as if he had). Obviously that comment by Kate was there for a reason, to key us in on something about the sulfur smell, but what? This might or might not be it. Could the water have something to do with the sickness? I dont know. Danielle did not seem "shocked" when they found the medical hatch, so did she know there were hatches there? Perhaps lived in one at some time (or right now for all we know) and the water in the hatch caused her party to get sick?? Its a thought. I mean, if you were stranded on an island for 16 years and somebody shows you an underground facility with electricity and all, wouldn't you freak out??? She just had no reaction of surprise at all, as if she knew they were there.

Also sulfur is a nonmetallic element, brittle, yellow in color and burning with suffocating fumes.

Certain sulfur producing bacteria are found in places that have volcanic activity, for what its worth.

EHH

Jack: You, um, you took a shower.

Kate: I had to see if it worked.

Jack: How was it?

Kate: Uh, pressure sucked, it kind of went cold at one point, and it smelled a little bit like sulfur but (she grins) it was a shower.

Jack: I know what you mean.

Kate: You could use one.

I'll back ya up one better, Sarah...I even fixed your spelling mistake in your quote! Here's the transcript of the scene from "Everyone Hates Hugo":

JACK: You, um, you took a shower.
KATE: I had to see if it worked.
JACK: How was it?
KATE [in a towel, trying to pick up her clothes]: Uh, pressure sucked, it kind of went cold at one point, and it smelled a little bit like sulfur but -- it was a shower.
JACK: I know what you mean.
KATE: You could use one.
JACK: Maybe a little later.
KATE [exiting]: I'll leave the shampoo for you.

So, there ya go. I live in Tampa...which gets it's main fresh water source from the Hillsborough River. Sometimes MY water smells like sulfer!

EDIT: Sorry, Sam G!! I totally missed your post of the transcript a few posts back!! Kudos to you!

Is it sulfur or something like it that's added to natural gas so that you can smell a leak?

The only other sulfur-smelling reference I've heard is from volcanic activitiy which is likely considering the formation of volcanic islands in the pacific.

This thought I always put down to actually coming from the toilet not the shower, sulfur can sometimes smell very much like its coming out of a toilet after someone uses it, its like the methane in the dung. Only question now is, is it just your average everyday excretion smell or is there a reason someone's dung smells like sulfur, like maybe their from hell? What does Lost get from metioning the sulfur?

See, I would think that if there is sulphur in the water and the smell is coming from the toilet, that when the toilet was flushed, there was air trapped in the pipes and flushing released it.

So that we can debate whether the sulfer smell came from the bacteria or the volcano or the bacteria that live in volcanos. Silly.

The statement was definately important and we'll find out sooner or later.
