That was a seriously twisted book, but then all of VC Andrews are twisted. *Basic plot: the father dies and the mother and children go back to her parents' mansion. *The grandmother locks the children in the attic while the mom lives downstairs and basically forgets about them. *The kids are starved, poisoned and beaten before they decide to escape.

It took them that long to decide to escape?

I forget how long they were locked in the attic - years maybe? It's been so long. Everything was gradual though - the grandma said the kids would stay in the attic until the grandfather died, and the mom reassured the kids that it wouldn't be long. However the grandfather wouldn't die and I think the mom got sidetracked with a new boyfriend. Four kids would've put a stop on the new romance.

I am so glad I've never read that book.

It makes me feel dirty just talking about it.
