View Full Version : Say Anything
abbybaby 05-04-2006, 08:45 AM I didn't see this mentioned anywhere so I had to bring up Hurleys shout out to the movie. I'm a Big John Cusack fan and Say Anything is one of the best chick ficks ever! Isn't the ending scene of that movie on a plane?
Cuter_than_kate 05-04-2006, 08:51 AM Yes, the last scene does take place on a plane with the couple waiting for the fasten seatbelt sign to turn off. I love that movie and John Cusack.
boo_boo_cat 05-04-2006, 08:52 AM I was cracking up when Hurley mentioned the holding the radio over his head - I instantly knew what he was referring to!
dushell 05-04-2006, 09:26 AM LOVED IT! Cusak is awesome and the fact that Hurley is into him totally fits Hurley. He hung out in a record store with his buddy the day they quit Mr. Clucks and I thought about it then too. How appropriate! And that the whole thing was over Sayid head just made me laugh out loud.
MinnieVanMommie 05-04-2006, 09:31 AM I , on the other hand, never saw the movie and had no idea what he was talking about...:frown:
Elinnz 05-04-2006, 09:39 AM someone posted somewhere else (i can't remember where) that it was interesting to have a reference to Say Anything the movie in an episode where perhaps you have a character, like Michael, willing to "say anything" to get his son back. I think this is a cool little theory for those of us who believe Michael is working for the others, temporarily, to get his kid back, and perhaps is lying about how armed or not armed they are, etc. Just a thought!
big_ee 05-05-2006, 10:48 PM When Hurley references the boom box scene in this movie, he mentions a Peter Gabriel song. Which in the movie is 'In Your Eyes' .. That song starts
'love I get so lost, sometimes'............ my italics.
Also in the South Park reference to that scene the Gabriel song is 'shock the monkey' now we know that ultimately the whole plot line is sealed in a glass box in case the series is ever cancelled. And that the revelation would come from a wise monkey (joop??)...
I think monkeys are getting more significant,,,,,,
KyleSBeaver 05-05-2006, 11:05 PM What on earth are you trying to say?
Nietsche 05-06-2006, 02:19 PM It's also a movie about Daddy Issues. Ione Skye's character is very close to her father, but it turns out he is embezzeling money from the elderly people he takes care of. She is completely heartbroken, and her dad goes to jail.
The reason they're waiting for the fasten seatbelt sign to go off in the end is because one of them is afraid to fly (I forget which) and they know that most accidents happen during takeoff and landing. So they think once the fasten seatbelt sign goes off they're safe. (I guess our Losties learned differently.)
Great, great movie. I loved the reference.
JosephT 05-06-2006, 02:45 PM Ione Skye was afraid to fly. And Cusack said something along the lines of 95% of plane accidents happen before the fasten seatbelt sign turns on (tell that to Oceanic Flight 815, huh?). So that's why they were waiting for it to turn on, because she was scared.
And yes, great movie indeed. I, too, loved the reference, and I love Hurley's character even more for making it.
xanthateto 05-06-2006, 02:51 PM I'm also pretty sure there was a reference to Ana Lucia being 'misunderstood' by a lot of Lost fans when Henry said that the Others had decided Ana Lucia was not one of the good ones, but Goodwin insisted she was just misunderstood.

You are completely right!:) Her Daddy does turn out to be a "con man" of sorts. I am going to rent the movie and watch it again (like I need an excuse to watch a John Cusack movie )! . Hopefully the next Book we will see Sawyer reading will be "midnight in the garden of good and evil" a Great book and another movie John Cusack starred in!
discipula 05-08-2006, 01:18 AM I LOVE that movie, it is definately in my top-10-all-time-favs. The title was referenced in the movie when Ione Skye confronts her father about his embezzling activity... I think she says something like "I know I can say anything to you", and it is the moment in the film that the two characters begin to lose their close bond. Prior, she is completely open with him, thus the irony of "I can say anything to you" when she begins to close up, and not talk to him....
I doubt this was intentional, but it's interesting considering all of the mis/non-communication among our losties! One of the frustrating aspects of 2FTR was there being no discussion of the inconsistencies in Michael's story, which just fits in with (1) Jack's recent penchant toward reaction rather than planning and acting, and (2) so many of the characters withholding information from others....
Anyway, I'm a huge John Cusack fan, and I just loved Hurley's reference to such a classic movie moment!

Mentioned as 'a joke' on the 23rd January 2006 official podcast.
'In case of cancellation, there is a script in the writer room inside a glass box marked "In Case of Cancellation - Break Glass'"
Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse explain that Joop is a talking monkey that smokes a pipe who, in case of cancellation will appear to explain every mystery on the lsland in a 4 page scene. It is also to be used in emergency if anything happen to the creators.
Joop is the name of the 102 year old monkey (ape) on the new hanso interactive site.
Peter Gabriel wrote a song called 'Shock the Monkey' . This played in the South Park episode, that spoofed the 'Say Anything' boom box scene, as instead of 'In your Eyes' that played in the Movie, the South Park boom box played 'shock the monkey'
So clearly Monkeys are getting more significant - That's what i am trying to say.
Shock the Monkey Lyrics copyright P. Gabriel
Shock the monkey to life
Shock the monkey to life
Cover me when I run
Cover me through the fire
Something knocked me out' the trees
Now I'm on my knees
Cover me, darling please
Monkey, monkey, monkey
Don't you know when you're going to shock the monkey

corvin12xu 05-10-2006, 11:16 AM My wife rarely gets movie references but this one she totally responded to so it was very good I agree.
Navigatrix 05-10-2006, 11:42 AM I LOVED Say Anything, particularly the scene when he asks, "Do you just need someone, or do you need me." Pause. "Never mind, I don't really want to know."
Swoon.
I love John Cusack ... and then I saw "Must Have Dogs", and immediately wished there was such a thing as a "brain eraser" so I could get it out of my head. GACK!!!!!!!

"..and the grand facade, so soon will burn.."
LostOCD 05-10-2006, 02:50 PM "..and the grand facade, so soon will burn.."
Not to mention:
"In your eyes...the resolution of all the fruitless searches..."
Sounds like some of us here at the Fuselage, eh?;)
velton 05-10-2006, 02:53 PM Remember in the movie when they were at that party, and the guy who was giving the party had on a chicken suit? That was a classic movie!
JosephT 05-10-2006, 03:03 PM "Do you just need someone, or do you need me." Pause. "Never mind, I don't really want to know."
It's actually more like this:
"One question: Are you here because you need someone or because you need me?" --- "Forget it, I don't care"
Then he kisses her.
I might be off on a word or two. Sorry to nitpick, it's my favorite scene of all-time.
abbybaby 05-10-2006, 04:02 PM Remember in the movie when they were at that party, and the guy who was giving the party had on a chicken suit? That was a classic movie!
Yeah and Cusack Had to be the "keymaster" at the party and judge who was sober enough to drive home, so him and Ione Sky end up driving some wasted guy in the backseat around all night long because he can't rember where he lives!   ! Too Funny!
shootfire 05-10-2006, 04:08 PM Just a little food for though...since it was brought up in "Say Anything" that statistically most crashes happen during takeoff and landing, could Flight 815 have been landing when the crash occurred? In other words, they were being brought to the island intentionally and the crash was an accident? I think that has been speculated before, just thought this might be an appropriate time to mention it.
Also, one of my favorite parts of that movie is when John Cusack's character comes to dinner and is asked what he wants to do with his life. His answer is that he doesn't really know what he wants to do, but he does know what he doesn't want to do. Then he goes into that whole sold, bought or processed thing. It's hysterical. My daughter and I say that to each other sometimes when one of us asks the other what we want to do. Of course we're usually talking about dinner or an evening's entertainment, but we just can't help ouselves.
Edited for spelling.

Cool! And he took a kickboxing foot to the nose right before he said it.
